No todo en Norteamérica es
mercado y producción vulgar.
Una región tan grande tiene
necesariamente que producir también
mobiliario contemporánea con altas
dosis de diseño.
Traemos dos ejemplos de
minimalismo de puro sabor ‘country’.
Muebles con este empleo de madera
en grandes secciones y calidades sólo
es posible en países con una gran
disponibilidad de materia prima, cosa
que no se da en todos los sitios.
Es válido, sin embargo, el tipo de
diseño y la filosofía que encierra.
Traemos en esta ocasión dos
pequeñas empresas neoyorquinas
donde la ideología de sus fundadores
está cargada de un fuerte respeto
medioambiental, de veneración hacia
el árbol y la madera, pero también
con un cierto componente panteísta,
propio del movimiento New Age.
En el aspecto formal se podría
encuadrar en la corriente minimalista,
con claras aportaciones por un lado
orientales (Japón, China) y por otro
puramente artísticas (escultóricas).
Puestos a buscarles paralelismos
estilísticos, podrían ser el equivalente
en mueble a los zapatos Camper.
El resultado final es un mueble de lujo,
en principio para la vivienda estándar
con un ‘target’ de clientes cultos (del
otro lado del océano, claro).
Tucker Robbins
Para esta empresa el proceso de
diseño comienza con la colaboración
y la exploración de las posibilidades
del material y la forma.
En su estudio en Long Island (NY),
una nave de 16.000 pies cuadrados,
se encuentra una inmensa colección
de objetos que sirven de inspiración y
de referencias visuales para el diseño.
Productos cosechados de todas
partes del mundo y cuidadosamente
reciclados. En este ambiente se
discute tranquilamente qué diseños se
quieren hacer. Una serie de talentosos
artesanos y diseñadores se ponen a la
obra para hacerlo realidad.
Entre sus clientes se encuentran
firmas como Calvin Klein.
En Filipinas, las carreteras están
flanquedas por enormes acacias.

aprovisiona de este tipo de madera,
una cosecha involuntaria que le
evita comprar en explotaciones de
dudosa reputación medioambiental.
La madera es entonces transportada
a un artesano de las comunidades
analfabetas de las cercanas montañas,
que es transformada en una silla, por
ejemplo. Esta pieza monolítica es
desbastada, tallada y lijada hasta el
pulido que da una superficie sedosa.
Los sellados y acabados de nogal
lavado o teca se aplican por Robbins
en su estudio de Long Island.
La aventura de Tucker Robbins
comienza con el estudio de las
culturas indígenas de Asia, África y
Latinoamérica. Inspirado por este
diseño tradicional, Tucker crea nuevas
obras con estas tribus indígenas de
Filipinas, Guatemala y otros lugares,
sintetizando las herramientas de las
culturas agrarias con diseño moderno.

crea nuevas formas, infundiendo
lo viejo en lo nuevo, lo tribal y lo
moderno.
A pesar de estar sólidamente
enraizado en la tradición, la forma
y el estilo de las piezas de Robbins
tienen una originalidad y una
apariencia exclusiva al ojo occidental,
precisamente porque su inspiración
traspasa siglos y continentes.
Irónicamente, como antiguo monje,
él vivió casi sin muebles durante 10
años. Inveterado viajero por todo el
mundo, Robbins dedica su tiempo
entre diseño de showrooms en su
taller de Nueva York y las diferentes y
remotas comunidades donde compra
su madera, y a menudo emplea a
artesanos locales para ayudarse a crea
piezas. Mezclando antiguos motivos
tribales con estilos modernos, llama
a su estilo de mobiliario Primitivismo
Moderno.
Robbins hace dos o tres viajes
diferentes a la selva cada año,
empleando varios meses cada vez. Ha
viajado por Guatemala, Africa, Tímor,
Borneo y las islas Filipinas, y en todas
partes adquiere las materias primas.
Es ilegal cortar muchas de las maderas
exóticas que emplea Robbins.
Por ello él recicla, comprando madera
de en torno a 100 años de antigüedad
que tenían un uso anterior por las
personas a las que se las compra.
Así, las fachadas de las casas se
transforman en cabeceros de
camas, las canastas se transforman
en lámparas. Las raíces de árboles
muertos se convierten en mesas de
café, donde las sinuosas formas son
sugeridas por la propia forma del
tronco.
Debido a que las piezas se trabajan
fundamentalmente a mano, en
vez de a máquina, la mayoría de la
madera que emplea Robbins tiene su
propia textura. Más aún, los aceites
aportados por manos humanas han
condicionado la textura de la madera
durante años proporcionando una rica
pátina natural que es difícil (cuando
no imposible) de obtener utilizando
técnicas modernas.
Pero lo que caracteriza realmente
su trabajo es la ausencia de simetría
artificial y de la triste igualdad que
es la marca de la casa. Sus piezas de
muebles son bellas, precisamente
bellas por esa falta de perfección en
el sentido occidental. En vez de eso,
poseen equilibrio, plenitud, armonía,
incluso historia. Cada pieza puede
tener un uso, pero también tiene una
historia que contar y alegra la vista
como una obra de arte.
Aunque sus muebles son muebles
que se usan. Pueden ser vistos no
sólo en galerías de alto standing,
sino en viviendas normales y
locales de negocio. Diseñadores
de interior, decoradores y clientes
de todo el mundo han respondido
entusiásticamente a la visión de Robin,
descubriendo en sus piezas una
naturalidad y una individualidad única
que está lejos del diseño de masas
anónimo del diseño moderno. Al final,
el resultado de su aproximación nooccidental al diseño de muebles es un
producto confortablemente familiar y
sorprendentemente nuevo.

John Housmand es también una
pequeña empresa neoyorquina cuyo
mobiliario recuerda algo a Tucker
Robbins, si bien su modus operandi
es bien diferente ya que trabaja con
maderas nativas norteamericanas.
La empresa hace mucho hincapié en
cuáles son los fines que pretende con
su mobiliario y presenta en su página
web una especie de ideario en el que
expresa que va más allá que el mero
fabricar muebles y hace volver la vista
hacia la madera, la naturaleza y un
estilo de vida diferente. No sabemos
si sus compradores finalmente le
harán mucho caso, o se limitarán a
poder disponer de una de esas piezas
escultóricas, que se parecen más a
esculturas minimalistas que objetos de
uso cotidiano.
He aquí algunas de las frases que
definen su ideario. La empresa es
una familia dedicada a los árboles

el equilibrio entre invenciones de alto
