LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
On March 14th, we at Corredor Historico CAREM, A.C. had the
honor and pleasure of being hosts of the “History of Rancho La
Puerta” presentation in the Miguel Mathes Media Room. With
an audience of more than 80 people, including Sra. Deborah
Szekely, co founder of Rancho La Puerta and Sr. Roberto Arjona,
General Manager, Manuelita Ching, Rene Gonzalez, and Jose
Anaya talked about the history of Rancho La Puerta since its’
inception in 1940 until recent times. The presentation was
accompanied by a film presentation greatly enjoyed by all, of
early pictures and the film stars and celebrities who have been
guests at the Ranch over the years.

After the presentation, Richard Hann, past president of the
Congress of History - San Diego and Imperial Valley and his wife,
Carol, presented an award to our Guadalupe Alvarez Sanchez
for her effort and dedication to the preservation of the region’s
history through the “Tecate en Voz de sus Habitantes” (Tecate Through the Voice of its’ Inhabitants) oral history
preservation project that she has worked on tirelessly.
I am excited to share with you an invitation to the Second Annual TEA PARTY which will be held at the Ibanez
residence on Friday, May 24th from 1 to 4 p.m. The TEA PARTY was one of last year’s most pleasant and enjoyed
events by more than 100 elegantly and beautifully dressed ladies who attended for an afternoon of good times,
spectacular food and great tea. Tickets are $400.00 pesos before May 18th and $500.00 pesos if purchased
after May 18th. All proceeds go toward the operation and maintenance of the Tecate Community Museum.

CAREM’S NEW MEMBER
With the never ending goal of constantly improving, reaching for excellence and striving for perfection to provide
community members, scientific community, and supporters, the most meaningful, insightful and enriching
experience of the history of the region, CAREM is very pleased to welcome its newest team member: Andres
Contreras Camargo. Andres has a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from the Universidad Autonoma de
Baja California and experience in various businesses in Tecate. His commitment, leadership and professionalism
come from a deep appreciation of our cultural heritage and a passion to improve the community that he is part of.
With Andres’ help, CAREM will launch a bilingual volunteer docent program for the Tecate Community Museum
that will ensure that every school group and every visitor will have an expert guide leading the experience
along the voyage through time in our region’s history through the museum’s three permanent exhibit areas:
Prehistoric Period, Ranching Period and Contemporary Period, and ethnobotanical garden. Andres will also work
in fundraising for museum operation, exhibit maintenance and improvements; will develop program and CAREM
educational and promotional materials that will be available at the Tecate Community Museum, community
libraries and Tecate schools; and with CAREM promotion in Baja California and California to facilitate the
partnering with organizations north of the border.

THE CALIFORNIA MISSION TRAIL
It is CAREM’s mission to present the history Baja California, including
the California Mission Trail; we hope to soon announce the details
of an educational and enjoyable tour to some of the missions and
culture in Baja California Sur. The tour would be late October or
early November starting in mystical sunny port city of Loreto, Baja
California Sur, the birthplace of the California Mission Chain. From
Loreto, the missions were developed into Baja California and up to
Alta California.
Mission and history aficionados are celebrating the 300th birthday
of explorer and colonizer of the Californias, Spanish Franciscan Friar
Junipero Serra, who walked 600 miles preaching and administering
the sacraments to Native Indiansfrom Loreto to San Diego, California,
U.S.A., and founded the mission chain in Alta California.
Our tour will be lead by the renowned Dr. Pamela Huckins, Ashford
University and Art Institute of Pittsburgh Professor and Missions
expert, who worked and studied with Dr. W. Michael Mathes for many
years. The tour will include the Art, Architecture and the Missions in
the north part of the State of Baja California Sur.

CARTA DE LA DIRECTORA EJECUTIVA
El 14 de marzo, los miembros del Corredor Histórico CAREM,
A.C., tuvimos el honor y el placer de ser anfitriones de la
presentación “Historia de Rancho La Puerta” en la Sala
Multimedia Miguel Mathes. Con una audiencia de más de 80
personas, incluyendo a la Sra. Deborah Szekely, co fundadora
de Rancho La Puerta y el Sr. Roberto Arjona, Director General.
Manuelita Ching, Rene González y José Anaya hablaron sobre
la historia de Rancho La Puerta desde sus inicios en 1940 hasta
tiempos recientes. La presentación fue acompañada de un power
point de mucho agrado por la audiencia con fotografías antiguas
de artistas de cine y celebridades que han sido huéspedes en el
Rancho a través de los años.

Posteriormente, Richard Hann, ex presidente del Congreso
de Historia – San Diego e Imperial Valley, y su esposa Carol,
otorgaron un reconocimiento a Lupita Álvarez Sánchez por su
esfuerzo y dedicación en la preservación de la historia regional a través del proyecto de historia oral, “Tecate en
Voz de sus Habitantes”, en el que ha trabajado incansablemente.
Me llena de emoción compartir contigo la invitación a la Segunda TARDE DE TÉ que se llevará a cabo en la
residencia Ibáñez el viernes 24 de mayo de 1 a 4 p.m. La TARDE DE TÉ fue uno de los eventos mas concurridos y
disfrutados por más de 100 bellas y elegantes damas que asistieron el año pasado y pasaron una divertida tarde,
con deliciosa comida y excelente té. Los boletos se adquieren con un donativo de $400.00 pesos antes del 18
de mayo y $500.00 pesos si se adquieren después del 18 de mayo. Lo recabado será destinado a la operación
y mantenimiento del Museo Comunitario de Tecate. Por favor invita a tus amistades y familiares a que nos

EL NUEVO INTEGRANTE DE CAREM
Con el permanente objetivo de mejorar buscando la excelencia y la perfección y con el fin de proveer a los
miembros de esta comunidad, de la comunidad científica y patrocinadores, la mas memorable, significativa y
enriquecedora experiencia de la historia de la región, CAREM con mucho gusto, le da la bienvenida al nuevo
integrante del equipo: a Andrés Contreras Camargo. Andrés tiene licenciatura en Administración de Empresas
de la Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, y experiencia laboral en varias empresas de Tecate. Su entrega,
liderazgo y profesionalismo nacen de una profunda apreciación por la herencia cultural y una pasión por mejorar
la comunidad de la cual forma parte.
Con la ayuda de Andrés, CAREM lanzará un programa bilingüe de docentes voluntarios para el Museo Comunitario
de Tecate, que asegurará que cada grupo escolar y cada visitante al Museo, tendrá un guía experto enriqueciendo
la experiencia educativa en el viaje a través del tiempo en la historia de nuestra región por las tres áreas de
exhibiciones permanentes: el Periodo Prehistórico, Periodo de Rancherías, Periodo Contemporáneo, y jardín
etnobotánico. Andrés también estará trabajando en la gestión de recursos para la operación del Museo, y
mantenimiento y mejorías a las exhibiciones; desarrollará materiales educativos y promocionales de CAREM,
que estarán disponibles en el Museo Comunitario de Tecate, bibliotecas de la comunidad y escuelas de
Tecate; y promocionará a CAREM en Baja California y Alta California para facilitar la vinculación y alianza con

EL CAMINO REAL MISIONERO DE LAS CALIFORNIAS
Una de las misiones de CAREM es presentar la historia de Baja
California, incluyendo el Camino Real Misionero de las Californias.
Tenemos la esperanza de anunciar próximamente los detalles de un
paseo cultural educativo y muy divertido a algunas de las misiones
de Baja California Sur. El paseo se llevará a cabo a finales de octubre
o principios de noviembre, empezando en la mística y siempre cálida
ciudad de Loreto, Baja California Sur; sitio de inicio del Camino Real
Misionero de las Californias. Desde Loreto, las misiones se fueron
expandiendo a Baja California y Alta California.
Aficionados de historia y de las misiones están celebrando el 300
aniversario del explorador y colonizador de las Californias, el fraile
Franciscano español, Junípero Serra, quien recorrió 600 millas a pie,
predicando e impartiendo los sacramentos a indígenas nativos de
Loreto hasta San Diego, California, Estados Unidos y fundó una serie
de misiones en Alta California.

La Dr. Pamela Huckins, catedrática de la Universidad de Ashford y del
Instituto de Arte de Pittsburgh, y experta en misiones, que trabajó y
estudió con el Dr. W. Michael Mathes por muchos años, será la guía
del recorrido. El recorrido incluirá el arte, arquitectura y Misiones de
la región norte del Estado de Baja California Sur.
