DIRECTIONS FOR APPLICATION FOR THE SPECIAL PROGRAM FOR FOREIGN STUDENTS IN ARID LAND AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, 2015 (THREE-YEAR DOCTORAL COURSE) The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences Tottori University Japan The United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences (UGAS), Tottori University, was founded in 1989 as an independent three-year Doctoral course. The UGAS is organized on the basis of the three Master's Courses of Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi Universities, and the research facilities at the Universities. The UGAS is operated in close alliance and cooperation with the Master's Courses of the three constituent Universities. The Special Program (SP) for foreign students in Arid Land Agricultural Sciences in the UGAS is designed for those students who have finished the Special Program of the Master's courses (Pre-Doctoral Courses) at the constituent Universities; Tottori, Shimane and Yamaguchi. Because the SP at the UGAS is to be open as of October 2015, any foreign students at large can apply for the SP in the field of arid land agricultural sciences and related sciences. Ⅰ. PURPOSE OF THE SPECIAL PROGRAM This Special Program (SP) is designed to provide academically advanced education to study bioresources, environmental foundation and management for agriculture in the arid land areas in the world. The students are expected to learn the basic and applied sciences related to the areas so that they are able to conduct appropriate measures to deal with desertification and food supply issues. Ⅱ. FIELDS OF STUDY AND NUMBER OF STUDENTS TO BE ADMITTED 1. Fields of Study: Applications for any field in arid land agricultural sciences and related sciences are accepted, provided that each applicant finds a suitable academic major advisor in the annexed "List of Supervisors and Their Research Interests". 2. Number of Students to be admitted: Three students funded by the Scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Technology (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) of the Japanese Government Scholarships (hereafter "Scholarship"). A limited number of students funded privately or by the other sources (hereafter "Personal Funds"). 1 Ⅲ. APPLICANTS FOR THE SCHOLARSHIP 1. QUALIFICATIONS (1) Nationality: Applicants for the Scholarship should not be living in Japan at the time of application. Applicants should be nationals from countries which have a diplomatic relation with Japan. (2) Age: Applicants should be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2015; those born on or after April 2, 1980. (3) Academic career: Applicants should have or be expected to earn a Master's degree by the end of September 2015. (4) Health: Applicants should be in good mental and physical health. (5) Language proficiency: A good working level in English is required. (6) Arrival in Japan: The admitted students must arrive in Japan between October 1 and 7, 2015. (7) Visa: Applicant must have a student visa (8) Applicants who are officially recommended by a university which holds an exchange agreement or has practically exchanged research activities with Tottori University (including the constituent universities). Notes: ① Military related personnel are not eligible to apply. ② Persons who can't come to Japan on the specified dates can't apply. ③ Those persons who have been engaged in education and research for approximately 3 years in their own countries after the last Scholarship was granted can't apply. ④ Persons already receiving financial support from their own governments or other organizations are ineligible for the Scholarship ⑤ Those students who have already applied for the 2015 MEXT scholarship programs through other Japanese universities or Japanese embassies or consulates; or the 2015 Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) scholarship for the Short-term Student Exchange Promotion Program; or those students who are currently enrolled under JASSO Scholarship can’t apply. ⑥ Applicants who will enroll at a university in Japan as a privately-financed overseas student in 2015 can't apply. ⑦ Applicants whose academic score does not meet the Monbukagakusho/MEXT criteria can’t apply.(For detailed information, please refer to the desired major supervisor.) ⑧ Applications are not approved to study on a project abroad. ⑨ Admission may be canceled, if successful applicants do not hold a Master's or equivalent degree by the end of September, 2015. 2 2. APPLICATION PROCEDURE Applicants seeking a Scholarship should submit the following documents through the desired major advisor between February 2 and 27, 2015. Applications directly mailed to the UGAS are not accepted. Documents: (1) Application in the prescribed form, APPLICATION FOR ADMISSION TO THE UNITED GRADUATE SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES, TOTTORI UNIVERSITY, 2015 (Form No. 1). (2) Another application in the prescribed form, APPLICATION FOR JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MONBUKAGAKUSHO:MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP (Double-sided printing) (3) FIELD OF STUDY AND STUDY PROGRAM in the prescribed form. (4) A WRITTEN PLEDGE in the prescribed form (Form No. 2). (5) LETTER OF APPLICATION (about 1,200 words). Use A4 paper and attach a cover sheet (Form No.3). (6) One copy of the applicant's Master's degree certificate or a certificate issued by the applicant's graduate school indicating that the applicant will be receiving a Master's degree by the end of September, 2015. Doctoral degree. (7) Transcripts of academic records with English translations issued by the schools that the applicant attended. (8) A letter describing the applicant's performance at the final school; the applicant’s academic performance clearly indicated in a manner such as being in the top 5% in the class, GPA, etc. (9) A summary of the Master's thesis in English (about 1,200 words), or a summary of the research program in English (about 1,200 words) in the case of applicants who anticipate a Master's degree. Use A4 paper and attach a cover sheet (Form No.4). (10) Certificate of citizenship issued by the applicant's municipal authority. (11) Letter of references from the dean of the applicant's college addressed to the President of Tottori University. (12) Recommendation Letter from the President of University or the Dean of Faculty to the President of Tottori University. (13) One copy of the record showing English ability such as TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS objectively. (14) Photocopies of publications described in item #8 in APPLICATION FOR JAPANESE GOVERNMENT (MONBUKAGAKUSHO:MEXT) SCHOLARSHIP. (15) Three photographs should be pasted in the designated place on the application form. Photographs should be taken from the front, from the chest up, bare-headed, and taken within 6 months of application. One photograph (4.5 x 3.5cm) and two photographs (4.5 x 3.5cm) Notes: ① These documents should either be typed or printed neatly in English. Application forms can be downloaded from the Website (http://rendai.muses.tottori-u.ac.jp/english/recruit/index.html). ② Applications will not be accepted unless all the documents mentioned above are fully and correctly 3 completed and delivered to the constituent University by February 27, 2015. ③ Applicants should interview with prospective major- and sub-advisors. Interviews can be done using e-mail ; but, such interviews have to be done at least three times individually by the prospective major advisor and two sub-advisors. ④ None of the documents submitted will be returned to the applicants. ⑤ Each applicant should select a professor as prospective major and contact the professor in advance in preparing the application documents. Applications failing to nominate a professor will not be accepted. ⑥ Once an applicant applies for admission for a Monbukagakusho Scholarship, the applicant must not withdraw from it. 3. Benefits of the Scholarship (1) Scholarship payments: A monthly allowance of 145,000 yen (proposed charges) will be given to each recipient from October 2015 to September 2018 by the Japanese Government. (2) School fees: All school fees, i.e., entrance examination, registration and tuition, shall be waived. (3) Round Trip transportation to Japan ① A recipient will be supplied, according to the itinerary designated by the Monbukagakusho, with an economy class air ticket from the international airport nearest to the applicant’s home address to the Tokyo (Narita) International Airport (or another international airport when the participating University of the United Graduate School finds it more desirable from an economical viewpoint). ② At the end of the term, a recipient who is going back to their home country within the specific period after the expiration of their Scholarship will be supplied, according to their application, with an economy class air ticket from Tokyo (Narita) International Airport to the international airport nearest to their home address. Note: Expenses incurred for travel from the designated international airport in Japan to the constituent University of the UGAS and the costs of insurance for the entire trip are not reimbursable. (4) This university encourages the participation to Personal Accident Insurance for Students Pursuing Education and Research to be able to spend a college life after entrance to school in peace. The premium is 2,600 yen in three years. This premium is considerably cheaper than the premium of the private insurance regime. And when a member of this insurance got injured, the member of this insurance is compensated for. (note) This insurance is accident insurance. When a member of this insurance got injured or died in the unexpected accident during regular curricular activities, extracurricular activities, the commute to school or in the campus, this insurance is paid. For details, please refer to Health Science Center (TEL (0857)31-5065). [Additional Benefits] The National Health Insurance scheme is a fundamental part of Japan's medical care system. It is 4 designed to cover a portion of the medical expenses incurred by citizens. To apply for National Health Insurance, go to your local municipal government offices and follow the required procedures as instructed. After joining the scheme, you will only be responsible for paying 30% of any medical expenses you incur. (Exceptions apply in some cases.) 4. ADMISSION FOR RECOMMENDATION TO MONBUKAGAKUSHO SCHOLARSHIP (1) Candidates for the Scholarship will be judged for acceptance under the document review and evaluation results of the interviews. (2) On the occasion of selection, Applicants with a nationality on the list of countries is given priority. (3) Monbukagakusho will select the recipients from candidates recommended by Tottori University. (4) Notification will be sent during July to applicants who were selected for admission to the Special Program by Monbukagakusho. 5. EDUCATION The successful applicants will be enrolled as full-time graduate students and be expected to complete their thesis research for a doctoral degree within three years, under supervision and instruction mainly in English. Each student is supervised by the faculty members of the three constituent Universities; a professor as a major advisor and two professors as sub-advisors. Although each student studies at the constituent University where the applicant’s major advisor resides, the applicant can use the training and research facilities at the other two constituent Universities. 6. RESERVATIONS (1) A recipient will be deprived of the Scholarship in the following cases: ① False statements in the documents. ② Violation of the pledge. ③ Violation of school regulations, and no promise of academic achievement. ④ Retiring from the SP or transferring to another university. ⑤ Switch of the visa status from Student to others. ⑥ Receiving a scholarship from any other organization including from an organization in your own country, except for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of the Japanese government. (2) As a general rule, the scholarship is not provided for the period when the foreign student takes a leave of absence or the student is absent for a long time. (3) If false statements were made in the application documents, the applicant’s admission shall be canceled even after having been accepted in the United Graduate School. 5 (4) With enrollment, new students are advised to become well informed about the Japanese climate, customs, manners, and other cultural aspects in general before coming to Japan. It is strongly recommended that they study the Japanese language. Knowledge of the Japanese language is very helpful to new-comers to Japan. Ⅳ. APPLICANTS WITH PERSONAL FUNDS ** This Section is for applicants who apply for the SP but not for the Scholarship. 1. QUALIFICATIONS (1) Nationality: Applicants with Personal Funds are welcome to apply for the SP regardless of their nationality or residential experiences in Japan. (2) Age: There is no age limitation for applicants with Personal Funds. (3) Academic career: Applicants should have or be expected to earn a Master's degree or equivalent qualifications by the end of September, 2015. Admission may be canceled, if successful applicants do not hold a Master's or equivalent degree by the end of September, 2015. (4) Health: Applicants should be in good mental and physical health. (5) Language proficiency: A good working level in English is required. (6) Arrival in Japan: The admitted students must arrive in Japan between October 1 and 7, 2015. (7) Note: Military related personnel are not eligible to apply, if they are to remain on duty during the period of study. 2. (6) A summary of the Master's thesis in English (about 1,200 words), or a summary of the research program in English (about 1,200 words) in the case of applicants who anticipate a Master's degree. (10) Passport size Photograph (5 x 4cm), showing a picture taken from the front, from the chest up, bare-headed, and taken within 6 months of the application date, indicating name and nationality on the reverse side (should be attached to the designated place on the application form). (11) Entrance examination fee of 30,000 yen (to be paid in cash or a postal money order, but waived for current Master students at the constituent Universities).
