Multilingual Services/Internationalization Services (Japanese, English, and Chinese)
Considering the status of CP+ as an international event with big features like World Premiere, the CP+ Division focuses on the enhancement
of language services. In addition to Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation for the business seminars, Chinese simultaneous
interpretation continued to be provided for the Keynote Speech and Panel Discussion by Top Engineers.
Likewise, we have distributed language stickers (for English and Chinese) to the exhibitors’ staff and to journalists. These were affixed to
the entry passes and exhibitor’s certificates in order to help provide efficient language services at the exhibition booths.
Website content, brochures for distribution at the venue, and guide signs are written in Japanese, English, and Chinese.

Exploring Future Imaging Opportunities
Ed Lee
(Group Director, Worldwide Consumer and Professional Imaging Services, InfoTrends Inc.)

With the digital photography market maturing, the imaging industry is faced with the challenge of
finding new growth opportunities. InfoTrends shared its views on the current state of the imaging
market and the future direction of Intelligent Imaging. This session covered new devices like
wearable imaging devices, including heads up displays, new technologies, and new services that
could drive future revenues.

Development of M.ZUIKO PRO LENS
Alan Bullock
(Associate Director, Connected Imaging Trends Service, InfoTrends Inc.)
A variety of new devices can capture stunning photos and HD video in locations and from
vantage points that were impossible just a few years ago. In this session, InfoTrends discussed
applications, opportunities, and challenges facing the point-of-view camera market, including the
need for supporting software and services.
February 12 (Thu) 14:00–14:45
Olympus Imaging has launched interchangeable lenses,
“M.ZUIKO DIGITAL” based on Micro Four-Thirds System
in 2009, and the professional category lens “M.ZUIKO
PRO” in 2013 together with OM-D E-M1. Developed new
technologies for the PRO lenses, 12-40mm/F2.8 PRO
and 40-150mm/F2.8 PRO were introduced.
EX-FR10 can be separated easily into two parts—the
camera unit and the LCD-equipped controller—making

The development of EF400mm F4 DO IS II USM

These marketing seminars were jointly held by three organizations: CIPA, which is continuously working
on statistics activities with digital cameras as its core; GfK, which has a powerful network spreading over
the countries of the world; and NPD, which has a good knowledge of U.S. trends. In this era of economic
downturns, it may not be easy to present measures that should be taken, and regions that should be
focused on. The seminars calmly, but sometimes passionately, reported the results of surveys and
statistics, and market trends, and offered an opportunity to think together with the audience.

We developed the new imaging lens system, EF400mm F4
DO IS II USM. This new imaging lens system has the new
diffractive optical element (DOE), named Gapless Dual-Layer
DOE. By applying this DOE, the diffractive flare that is one of
the conventional problems is effectively reduced. Furthermore,
we improve image quality with simultaneous use of Ultra
Low Dispersion lens and large diameter aspherical lens. We
introduced these technical details in this seminar.
We explained about the reasons why Sigma has
developed 2 types of 150-600mm lenses with different
concepts, and how they differ from each other. The
presenter was the optical designer of both lenses, and
based on the respective product concepts, he shared
some of the background stories mainly focusing on the
optical design.

The FUJIFILM X-T1’s “Real Time Viewfinder”
10 Development of Low Pass Selector
February 13 (Fri) 16:00–16:45
February 13 (Fri) 17:00–17:45
The FUJIFILM X-T1’s Real Time Viewfinder allows a
purely immersive shooting experience with the highest
magnification ratio of 0.77x, and with the display’s
lag time of just 0.005 sec. I introduced this finder
development.
We have developed a brand new technology of “AA filter
simulator” in order to realize a mode for high resolution priority
and another for moire-reduction priority with one single DSLR.
A tiny “sub-pixel level” move of the image sensor unit during
image exposure, which is based on SR technology, generates
the same level of moire-reduction effect as optical AA filters.

Japan-France Photo Cultural Exchange—Special Event
LES ZOOMS 2014 Photo Exhibition February 12 (Thu) to 15 (Sun) Venue: Inside Exhibition Hall
Put on by “SALON de la
PHOTO,” a photo imaging
event held in Paris every year,
“LES ZOOMS” is a photo
contest in which leading photo
magazine editors have a place
among the judges. This event
exhibited the works of Mr.
Rodolphe Sebbah, winner of
the grand prix Public Award,
and Mr. Manolo Mylonas,
winner of the grand prix Press
Award.
The Video Area and video-related events were held to comprehensively introduce video solutions, centered on SLR cameras which are in
increasing demand, for professional photographers.
New photo contest in collaboration between Japan and France,
judged by the editors in chief of photography magazines
As part of development and support activities for
emerging professional photographers who hope
to succeed domestically and overseas, CP+ has
established a new photo contest, with the editors
in chief of photography/camera magazines as
judges. As a setting for new photographers
to exhibit their talents, this contest is held in
collaboration with the LES ZOOMS awards
held by SALON de la PHOTO, a photographic
event in France, along with various photographic
magazines in Japan. The contest awards two
prizes: the Editor’s Award, selected by the editors
in chief, and the Public Award, selected by
popular vote.

4K monitor now at your
disposal! If you have
an 8-million pixels (or
greater) image, you
can enjoy viewing it
in unbelievably highdefinition. In this special
exhibit, visitors brought
their own photo data and
were able to see clear
and distinct images on
the 4K monitor.
8K UHDTV is currently being
developed, led by NHK (Japan
Broadcasting Corporation). Ultra
high-definition images with 33 million
pixels, which is sixteen times as
many pixels as the current HDTV,
and 22.2ch surround sound allows
you to feel the ambience as if
you were in the scene. “Makino’s
Wondrous Guide to Plants” and
takes of “Mt. Fuji,” both filmed by a
digital SLR camera, were shown at
the exhibition. In addition, visitors
could enjoy viewing the 2014 New

Don’t Fear SLR Moviemaking!
—SLR Movie Shooting Guide for Still Camera Photographers
Hiroshi Shikano (Photographer)
The seminar this year introduced cameras, peripheral
equipment, and applications that further brush up SLR
movies, considering 4K compatibility. Particularly,
multicam editing is an efficient technique that makes
full use of up, long, and partial up, thus showing “a
subject that hardly moves” in a dynamic way. Through
demonstration, the participants experienced the
workflow of actual shooting, loading on the spot, and
editing with Final Cut Pro X.

How Should Professional Photographers Work on
Creating Video?
Akihiko Nagumo (Photographer)
Along with diversified media and advertisements,
photographers are now demanded to have movie
skills. Based on a hard look at the 4K era that is
coming upon use full swing, the necessity to deal
with 4K is only increasing. This session focused
on advertising photographers, and discussed how
they should work on video production; equipment
and shooting know-how; and the mental
preparedness needed for production.
Cooperator: Light Up Corporation
It has been said for a long time that there would one day be no border between photography and video, and now a wide variety of models
blurring this line have been released from manufacturers. Again this year, a special Video Area was set up in the exhibition hall.
to introduce all aspects of the latest video solutions, including DSLR videos, of course, movie cameras that take advantage of the
descriptive capability of photographic lenses, editing software, and peripherals to enhance directing.
In addition, Mini Seminars were held by the exhibitors.
Venue: Conference Center 314
In honor of Martin Parr’s
visit for the talk show and
for a one-day seminar
at CP +, a special photo
studio for couples for
St. Valentine’s Day was
also set up onsite! A

What do you expect of future CP+ (excerpt)
・It would be an even better event if there was a “community” feel to it. I think the event is kind of like a festival that brings together people that have the same
hobby, so it would be interesting if there were more opportunities for visitors to communicate with each other.
・I wish that the event would focus more on how to enjoy pictures after they are taken, rather than just on the technology and products for taking pictures.
・I am happy that more and more people have become interested in cameras, along with the spread of smartphones. The population of photographers is aging,
including me, at over 75 years old, and it has become hard to carry around a heavy DSLR even on short trips. Whether manufacturers have picked up on
this trend or not, it was obvious that they were competing with each other and exhibiting mid- to high-level compact digital cameras. For camera enthusiasts
intermediate and above who do not go crazy over cameras, we had hoped to see such exhibits. I would like the subsequent CP+ to consist of events that satisfy
the needs of the era and generate more demand.
・It would be nice if the show exhibits or provides ideas on how to utilize pictures after taking them. There was one picture at ONAEBA created by arranging
several pictures to create a work for interior decoration, and if more of such ideas are shown at the show, I think the cultural value of pictures will increase.
・I want the show to hold more talks and exhibitions for beginners and families rather than events for only professionals and experts. I couldn’t understand the
explanation of the functions well at the venue, so it would have been nice if there was a booth for beginners who have trouble fully understanding the exhibitions
so that beginners like me would be better able to enjoy the exhibits more. Based on the difficulties of beginners, it may lead to new development and innovation.
・It was a good show because there were projects and events where I could learn new things as a first-time owner of a DSLR. I thought it might be more
interesting if the show holds an event in which visitors can participate by taking pictures inside the venue with his/her own camera and having them judged, with
the best picture receiving an award. It would be fun and a good chance to show one’s skill in finding photogenic subjects within the limited area of the venue.
・As it is a good opportunity to hear the stories of professional photographers, I would like the timetables of each company to be made available, even on the day
before or the day of the event. It is a great chance to see and touch new products, and I hope the show will become more successful in the future. I would like
there to be workshops for a small group of people, held by professional photographers, even if the participants have to be decided through a draw.
・I wish for extravagant exhibitions, much like the ice skating rink or merry-go-round at venues other than Yokohama in the past. It strongly felt like the market will
contract if the current situation continues, and I think the event should explore involving other photography-related industries (smartphone manufacturers, travel
industry, automobiles, outdoors, etc.)
+
・As the use of a camera has changed from the past style of taking a picture (still image) on film and then printing it on paper, I wish for the CP to be positioned as
a comprehensive exhibition, like a motor show, where various products of photography-related fields are introduced, such as storage and graphics software not
only for still images but also for movies, as well as computers, network sharing, and smartphone apps, and of course, printing. I felt the exhibition space was a
little small this year (especially the ONAEBA booth), and I hope that the Conference Center can be more effectively utilized.
・I look forward to the release of new products every year. Many of the people at the booths of camera manufacturers are salespersons, but I would like some
engineers to be present as well. In particular, I would prefer to meet the developers of the product and learn about the aims of the product, rather than meeting
professional photographers. Also, it was a good idea to exhibit new products that were not sold in stores yet, but it was disappointing that there were some
products that will not be released for a long time.
・I want the hands-on events to be easier to participate in. It will be nice if there are booths and events that the whole family can enjoy rather than just products for
professionals and skilled amateurs.
・It is nice to see new products, but it would also help if many regular products are exhibited as well.
