InfoTrends shared its views on the current state of the imaging market and the future direction of Intelligent Imaging. This session covered new devices like wearable imaging devices, including heads up displays, new technologies, and new services that could drive future revenues. 2. 11:30–12:10 Development of M.ZUIKO PRO LENS Alan Bullock (Associate Director, Connected Imaging Trends Service, InfoTrends Inc.) A variety of new devices can capture stunning photos and HD video in locations and from vantage points that were impossible just a few years ago. In this session, InfoTrends discussed applications, opportunities, and challenges facing the point-of-view camera market, including the need for supporting software and services. February 12 (Thu) 14:00–14:45 Olympus Imaging has launched interchangeable lenses, “M.ZUIKO DIGITAL” based on Micro Four-Thirds System in 2009, and the professional category lens “M.ZUIKO PRO” in 2013 together with OM-D E-M1. Developed new technologies for the PRO lenses, 12-40mm/F2.8 PRO and 40-150mm/F2.8 PRO were introduced. EX-FR10 can be separated easily into two parts—the camera unit and the LCD-equipped controller—making it possible to take various kinds of interesting shots including self-portraits and group shots. 3 The development of EF400mm F4 DO IS II USM English-Japanese simultaneous interpretation These marketing seminars were jointly held by three organizations: CIPA, which is continuously working on statistics activities with digital cameras as its core; GfK, which has a powerful network spreading over the countries of the world; and NPD, which has a good knowledge of U.S. trends. In this era of economic downturns, it may not be easy to present measures that should be taken, and regions that should be focused on. The seminars calmly, but sometimes passionately, reported the results of surveys and statistics, and market trends, and offered an opportunity to think together with the audience. 1. 13:30–13:50 <GfK Seminar> [Global] Success Factors in a Challenging Imaging Market Frank Franz (Global Sales and Marketing Director Photo Products, GfK Retail and Technology GmbH) <GfK Seminar> [U.S.] Latest U.S. Trends in Image Capture Ben Arnold (Executive Director, Industry Analyst, The NPD Group) 4. 15:00–15:30 We developed the new imaging lens system, EF400mm F4 DO IS II USM. This new imaging lens system has the new diffractive optical element (DOE), named Gapless Dual-Layer DOE. By applying this DOE, the diffractive flare that is one of the conventional problems is effectively reduced. Furthermore, we improve image quality with simultaneous use of Ultra Low Dispersion lens and large diameter aspherical lens. We introduced these technical details in this seminar. We explained about the reasons why Sigma has developed 2 types of 150-600mm lenses with different concepts, and how they differ from each other. The presenter was the optical designer of both lenses, and based on the respective product concepts, he shared some of the background stories mainly focusing on the optical design. 5 (Managing Director, GfK Retail and Technology China Co.,Ltd.) <GfK Seminar> [Asia (Emerging Nations in Southeast Asia)] Growth Opportunities in Imaging Asia Gerard Tan (Regional Account Director, GfK Asia Pte Ltd) 6. 16:00–16:40 8 The world of super-high sensitivity of α7s, and the technology of supporting it Noriyuki Ogasawara (SIGMA Corporation) 6 Development of 16-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD MACRO February 13 (Fri) 11:30–12:15 February 13 (Fri) 13:00–13:45 As one of the α7 series which carries a full-size image sensor, Sony put on the market α7s characterized by super-high sensitivity in June, 2014. Family Boss or colleagues from work 1% Other What do you expect of future CP+ (excerpt) ・It would be an even better event if there was a “community” feel to it. I think the event is kind of like a festival that brings together people that have the same hobby, so it would be interesting if there were more opportunities for visitors to communicate with each other. ・I wish that the event would focus more on how to enjoy pictures after they are taken, rather than just on the technology and products for taking pictures. ・I am happy that more and more people have become interested in cameras, along with the spread of smartphones. The population of photographers is aging, including me, at over 75 years old, and it has become hard to carry around a heavy DSLR even on short trips. Whether manufacturers have picked up on this trend or not, it was obvious that they were competing with each other and exhibiting mid- to high-level compact digital cameras. For camera enthusiasts intermediate and above who do not go crazy over cameras, we had hoped to see such exhibits. I would like the subsequent CP+ to consist of events that satisfy the needs of the era and generate more demand. ・It would be nice if the show exhibits or provides ideas on how to utilize pictures after taking them. There was one picture at ONAEBA created by arranging several pictures to create a work for interior decoration, and if more of such ideas are shown at the show, I think the cultural value of pictures will increase. ・I want the show to hold more talks and exhibitions for beginners and families rather than events for only professionals and experts. I couldn’t understand the explanation of the functions well at the venue, so it would have been nice if there was a booth for beginners who have trouble fully understanding the exhibitions so that beginners like me would be better able to enjoy the exhibits more. Based on the difficulties of beginners, it may lead to new development and innovation. ・It was a good show because there were projects and events where I could learn new things as a first-time owner of a DSLR. I thought it might be more interesting if the show holds an event in which visitors can participate by taking pictures inside the venue with his/her own camera and having them judged, with the best picture receiving an award. It would be fun and a good chance to show one’s skill in finding photogenic subjects within the limited area of the venue. ・As it is a good opportunity to hear the stories of professional photographers, I would like the timetables of each company to be made available, even on the day before or the day of the event. It is a great chance to see and touch new products, and I hope the show will become more successful in the future. I would like there to be workshops for a small group of people, held by professional photographers, even if the participants have to be decided through a draw. ・I wish for extravagant exhibitions, much like the ice skating rink or merry-go-round at venues other than Yokohama in the past. It strongly felt like the market will contract if the current situation continues, and I think the event should explore involving other photography-related industries (smartphone manufacturers, travel industry, automobiles, outdoors, etc.) + ・As the use of a camera has changed from the past style of taking a picture (still image) on film and then printing it on paper, I wish for the CP to be positioned as a comprehensive exhibition, like a motor show, where various products of photography-related fields are introduced, such as storage and graphics software not only for still images but also for movies, as well as computers, network sharing, and smartphone apps, and of course, printing. I felt the exhibition space was a little small this year (especially the ONAEBA booth), and I hope that the Conference Center can be more effectively utilized. ・I look forward to the release of new products every year. Many of the people at the booths of camera manufacturers are salespersons, but I would like some engineers to be present as well. In particular, I would prefer to meet the developers of the product and learn about the aims of the product, rather than meeting professional photographers. Also, it was a good idea to exhibit new products that were not sold in stores yet, but it was disappointing that there were some products that will not be released for a long time. ・I want the hands-on events to be easier to participate in. It will be nice if there are booths and events that the whole family can enjoy rather than just products for professionals and skilled amateurs. ・It is nice to see new products, but it would also help if many regular products are exhibited as well. 17 10.
