CHARACTERS USED IN SWORD SIGNATURES
The following is a list of many characters you will find on a
Japanese sword. The list does not contain every Japanese (on-yomi,
音読み) or Sino-Japanese (kun-yomi, 訓読み) reading of a character
as its main focus is, as indicated, on sword context. Sorting takes
place by the number of strokes and four different grades of cursive
writing are presented. Voiced readings are pointed out in brackets.
Uncommon readings that were chosen by a smith for a certain
character are quoted in italics.

kōki (皇紀): Japanese imperial rear, sometimes also referred to as
“national calendar year.” It is based on the legendary foundation of
Japan by Emperor Jimmu in 660 BC and emphasized the long
history of Japan and the Imperial dynasty. It was not in use before
the Meiji era and is often seen on gendaitō blades from World War II
times as the year 1940 was considered especially auspicious because
it was the year 2600 in the kōki counting.
gyōnen (行年): made at the age of…, e.g. in the syntax “gyōnen
nanjūissai” (行年七十一歳, “at the age of 71”). In this context, the

Torigoye used two types of kaō, a flat and “bird-shaped” and a
round one. It is said that he used the flatter one for pre-Edo fittings
wheras one dash at the far left means 1st class item (top left), the
two dashes at the far left 2nd class item (top right). The round one
was used for Edo period fittings, again with two dashes, this time to
