SD BWA CONFERENCE
“PERCEPTIONS”
QUIET CANNON
Montebello, CA
HOSTS:
OXNARD BUDDHIST TEMPLE
PASADENA BUDDHIST TEMPLE
JUNE 13 2015
Greeting:
REV KODO UMEZU, BISHOP
Greetings!
Welcome to the 2015 Buddhist Churches of America Southern District Buddhist
Conference and SD Buddhist Women’s Association Conference, being held in
Montebello, California. The theme is “Perceptions: The ability to see, hear, or
become aware of something through the senses.”
I am very interested in listening to the keynote messages and participating in
thought-provoking workshops from Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge, Rev. Gregory
Gibbs, and Rev. Masanori Watanabe, to test my senses.
The examples of perceptions given on the conference website have raised my
curiosity. We often make assumptions about things we see, hear, or perceive, but
things are not always as they appear. If we think about perceptions in terms of the
Buddha Dharma, perhaps we might relate it to mindfulness.
I appreciate the work of the Oxnard Buddhist Temple and the Pasadena Buddhist
Temple in co-hosting this event designed to give us an opportunity to spend time
in the company of our Jodo Shinshu sangha.
Let us enjoy every moment of this wonderful gathering and deepen our appreciation
of the nembutsu teaching. And I hope everyone will go home with a better sense of
who we are and a correct perception of what our lives are all about.
In Gassho,
Rev. Kodo Umezu, Bishop
Buddhist Churches of America
Greeting:
REV PATRICIA USUKI
Greetings and welcome to the 2015 Southern District Conference. The
theme for this year’s conference is Perceptions: Do You See What I See?
This could as easily refer to any of our senses. Is your consciousness
of something the same as somebody else’s? We may grasp the answer
to these questions intellectually, yet we often act as though everyone
perceives things in the same way, or that our view is the right view. It’s
easy to understand how misunderstandings and misconceptions can
arise. Sometimes we are brought to see things in a different light. Our
views may change or at least become broader and more complete. Such
exercises may help us to become aware of how difficult it is for us to see
things just as they are, the way they really are. In this awareness, we
are brought to say the Nembutsu for the compassion we receive as such
imperfect and deluded beings.
We are grateful to the members of Oxnard and Pasadena Buddhist Temples
for organizing this conference, and to Rev. Harry Bridge, Rev. Masanori
Watanabe, and Rev. Gregory Gibbs for guiding us in the exploration of this
topic today.
Thanks also to our Bishop, Rev. Kodo Umezu, for taking time from his
busy schedule to join us. Please enjoy the conference and take away a
fresh perspective on your views of life and living.
Sincerely in Gassho,
Rev. Patricia Usuki,
Southern District Ministers’ Association,
Kyokucho
Greeting:
TERRI OMORI
Dear Rev. & Mrs. Umezu, Ministers and Dharma Friends,
On behalf of the Southern District Council of the Buddhist Churches of
America I would like to welcome you to the 2015 BCA Southern District
Buddhist Conference and Southern District Buddhist Women’s Association
Conference.
We are so fortunate to have this annual event. To be able to join together as
fellow Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, to meet and reacquaint with fellow Dharma
Friends, and as a Sangha to enrich and deepen our understanding of the
Dharma. Thank you for embracing this opportunity and partaking in today’s
activities.
I would also like to express appreciation to Rev. Harry Bridge for sharing
the Dharma as the keynote speaker, and to Rev. Masanori Watanabe, Rev.
Gregory Gibbs, Rev. Patricia Usuki, Mr. Bruce Arikawa and the members
of the Pasadena and Oxnard Buddhist Temples for coordinating today’s
conference.
Enjoy every moment!
Gassho,
Terri Omori
BCA Southern District, Council Chair
Greetings:
REV GREGORY GIBBS & REV MASANORI WATANABE
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2015 Southern District Buddhist Conference.
Our theme is Perceptions and there will be some talk about the relativity and
questionable reliability of our perceptions of ourselves and our world. To cut to the
chase, my conclusion will be to ask you each how you choose to see life. Do you
elect to see yourself as within the embrace of the Buddha’s tireless compassion?
Rather than just seeing the glass as half full, can you see yourself next to an
inexhaustible stream of nurturance, from which you may refill the glass as often
as you wish? The most important concerns about perception I will ask you to
consider, may be concerns about what we choose to perceive. For now, I’m going
to refill my glass from the reliable stream of the Buddha’s tireless compassion.
Thank you for reading this and thank you for attending this conference.
Gassho,
Rev. Gregory Gibbs

Greetings:
JUDY WATANABE & BRUCE ARIKAWA
Greetings to all. As co-host, the Oxnard and Pasadena BWA welcomes
you to this annual Southern District BWA Conference. We have gathered
to listen to our speakers, discuss and share different ideas and thoughts.
Our hope is that we will gain much today and that it will help us in our
endeavors to look deeper into how we perceive our surroundings.
In Gassho,
Judy Watanabe
President
Southern District BWA
WELCOME!
On behalf of the Pasadena Buddhist Temple, the Oxnard Buddhist Temple,
and Southern District Conference committee members, I would like to
welcome you to the 2015 Southern District Conference and Buddhist
Women’s Association Conference at Quiet Cannon.
Our perceptions are very dependent on who we are, how we were raised,
where we live, time in our life, etc. I’ve seen a t-shirt with the saying “I don’t
have an attitude problem, you have a perception problem.” Today I hope
that you will be more observant, to really listen, and to become aware of
how you perceive your self and others around you.

Three Treasures
Leader:
How rare and wondrous it is to have been born into human
life, and now I live it. How rare and wondrous it is to be
able to listen to the Buddha-Dharma, and now I am able to
hear it. If I do not transcend the world of delusion in this life,
when will I ever attain spiritual liberation? May I, along with
the entire Sangha, with sincere heart and mind, rely on that
which can be truly relied on in life - the Three Treasures.
All:
I rely on the Buddha. May I, along with all sentient beings,
awaken to the Great Path with my entire being and discover
the highest aspiration, which is to become a Buddha.
I rely on the Dharma. May I, along with all sentient beings,
deeply reflect on the meaning of the sutras and gain wisdom
that is as deep and vast as the ocean.
I rely on the Sangha. May I, along with all sentient beings,
become one Sangha of life, able to move forward and live
with a dynamic spirit that is hindered by nothing.
Leader:
The unsurpassed, deep, and wondrous Dharma, even in
millions of kalpas, is extremely difficult to encounter, but
now I am able to experience and embrace it. May I come to
understand and revere the true meaning of the Tathagata.
