The EU Directive 2011/65/EU from 8 June 2011 (also known in everyday language as RoHS II) for restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment has taken the place of the previous RoHS Directive 2002/95/EG. In Germany, the new Directive is being implemented through the Material Ordinance for Electrical and Electronic Equipment (ElektroStoffV). This stipulates that electrical and electronic equipment, including cables and replacement parts, may not be brought into circulation if more than 0.1 of its weight percentage is accounted for by lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybromated biphenyl or polybromated diphenyl ether, or if more than 0.01 of its weight percentage per homogeneous substance is accounted for by cadmium. The Directive provides for a step-by-step extension of its provisions to all electrical and electronic devices by 22 July 2019. In addition to the products affected to date, the Directive will cover, among other things, medical monitoring and control instruments as from 22 July 2014 and industrial monitoring and control instruments as from 22 July 2017. This means that fasteners as such are not covered by the Directive. This may change if they are an element of equipment such as the devices referred to above.
