While the vast majority of terms are identical in American and British English, American English alternatives do exist for certain terms. Courtesy titles: avoid the titles Ms., Mr., Mrs. except in letter salutations. Capitalization: write “Advanced Materials” (with an upper-case “A” and “M”) when used as a proper name to refer to the programme of study or centre of excellence at the University of Bayreuth; write “advanced materials” (with a lower-case “a” and “m”) when referring to the corresponding subject area or discipline, which is researched at universities around the world. Dates: use the conventional day/month/year as follows: 27 January 2015 or 27.01.2015. Miscellaneous: Quotes: Always use inverted commas (“…”) instead of angle quotes («…») or German quotation marks („…“). British v. US spelling: For words that have British and American spelling derivatives, the preferred choice for use at the University of Bayreuth is the spelling listed in the Oxford English Dictionary (thus “enrolment” rather than “enrollment”). Please note that many words end in “-ize” or “-ization”, even in British English (e.g. “authorize,” “emphasize,” “internationalize,” and “organize”). 1 Please note that the abbreviations of titles may also be written without periods (full stops); hence Prof, Dr, Mr, Mrs, and Ms are also acceptable. Likewise, we generally prefer “towards,” “upwards,” “afterwards,” etc. to “toward,” “upward,” and “afterward.” Correspondence: In contrast to German correspondence, the first letter of the first sentence is always capitalized.
