14–17 May 2015 - Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti

Epiphanies of the Divine in the Septuagint and
the New Testament: Mutual Perspectives
The Department of Theology and
Religious Studies in collaboration
with the Centre for Bible, Ethics,
and Theology (CBET)
V. International Symposium of the
Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti
Aim: Investigations into the description of experiences
of divine interaction in the world in the LXX and the NT.
We call for papers on the topic Epiphanies of the Divine
in the Septuagint and the New Testament. This may
include investigations into the description of
experiences of divine interaction within the world of the
LXX and the NT. For example, how is the NT perception
of divine disclosures influenced and shaped by the
LXX? To what extent do both textual corpora share a
common descriptive language? How do these
descriptions differ from expressions of similar
experiences in their surrounding textual cultures? The
focus may be either on literary genre or topic, or on a
specific sematic field. A further avenue of investigation
may be an exploration of the actual experience behind
the description of, e.g., a heavenly journey or the
hearing of God’s voice, perhaps with reference to the
current interest in religious experiences in theology,
social studies and psychology.
The symposium will comprise three comprehensive
main papers (60 minutes) and 14 papers on 7 topics,
each addressing a given topic from an LXX and also an
NT perspective (i.e. two papers for each topic, forming
a ‘pair’). In addition there will be three reading groups
that will meet during the conference to pursue related
questions through study of relevant source texts under
the guidance of experienced philologists.
Possible topics could involve (it is important that a dual
perspective – from the LXX to the NT and from the NT
to the LXX – is possible):
! Angelophanies in the LXX and the NT
! The limits of human language to describe divine
realities
! Theiophanies1 related to the Temple and the cult
!

This wider term is used to include the description of divine/heavenly
realities of a non-personal character, like Exod 25:9, 40 (26:30; 27:8; 31:1–
6; Acts 7:44; Heb 8:5) but is not meant to exclude the appearance or
involvement of heavenly beings.
