New Cargill Site
in Ft Dodge
Cargill is committed to feeding
the world in a responsible way,
reducing environmental impacts,
and improving local communities.
Their new facility in Ft Dodge, IA reinforces their goal to
be the global leader and Railserve helps fulfill this objective by
providing safe and reliable switching onsite.
Cargill purchased the idled Ft Dodge facility (90 miles
NW of Des Moines) in 2011 and invested millions to retrofit
and expand it. It was transformed into a world class bio-refinery
campus and began operations in late 2013. At full capacity, it will
use 150,000 bushels of corn a day to make dextrose, Sweet Bran®
cattle feed, and ethanol (~ 115 million gallons per year)
The corn wet mill ethanol plant provides the base load grind
for the campus and supports additional business growth. For example, they ship dextrose from Ft Dodge via pipeline to a nearby
plant that uses it to make lysine (for animal feed).
Railserve Site Leader Jake Thomas and his Ft Dodge team
heighten safety, increase efficiencies, and reduce costs by managing the switching requirements of multiple plant areas. Jim
Jenkins is Railserve’s Regional Leader for the area and Gene
Hunter maintains the Ft Dodge motive power. The Ft Dodge
operation joins other Railserve-handled Cargill sites in Blair, NE;
Dayton, OH; Eddyville, IA; Hammond, IN; and Memphis, TN.

LEAF ® Improvements Abound
Railserve continues
its commitment to
provide efficient
and environmentally
sound LEAF ®
locomotives
by investing in
improvements at its
manufacturing site
in Longview, TX.
The process began by reducing
unnecessary inventory, which improved
housekeeping and created valuable
space for the manufacturing process.
Using LEAN and 5S principles (Sort,
Straighten, Shine, Standardize, Sustain),
the physical workflow was redesigned to
improve manufacturing efficiency and
product quality. Physical improvements
included new concrete flooring, track
repairs, upgraded lighting, and new
wash/change rooms.
The LEAF® ordering process now
enables customers to easily select
options, upgrades, and accessories like
wireless video cameras, higher capacity
air compressors, and remote coolant
refill systems. All models include fullyinsulated cabs, reduced noise levels,
improved radiator systems, and a redesigned cold weather package.
In addition, the LEAF® now has
Observe/Analyze/Respond™ (OAR)
technology developed by Alternative
Motive Power Systems. OAR allows
users to track LEAF® operating data
from a remote location via a web-based
dashboard. For example, a Logistics
Manager at a HQ’s office can use it to
see how their LEAF® locomotives are
operating at multiple plant sites. This
data (which can be displayed in multiple
formats and graphs) can help LEAF®
users improve safety and operating
efficiency at their sites.
Railserve’s LEAF® team is
committed to quality, service, and
continuous improvement to provide the
most efficient and reliable locomotives
in the industry. To learn more about
a Railserve LEAF® can improve your
operation, contact Railserve’s TJ

Railserve Welcomes Canexus
Railserve is proud to establish a new
partnership with Canexus, a leading
Calgary-based chemical manufacturing
and handling company. To capitalize on
their strategic location to the Canadian
oil sands market, Canexus built a new
rail storage and transloading facility
in Bruderheim, Alberta (just north of
Edmonton). The terminal (known as
North American Terminal Operations –
NATO) is the first of its kind in Alberta
with a direct connection to pipeline (and
CN and CP access).
Railserve provides railcar switching
and train indexing services onsite and at
full capacity, NATO will have the ability to process eleven 100–110 car unit
trains of crude oil per week. Railserve
Site Leader Mike Allan and his team are
proud to have helped the site begin
a safe and productive operation and look
forward to continued growth. Jason
Smith is Railserve’s Regional Leader for
the area.

Railserve Introduces Yard Tracker
Yard Tracker is Railserve’s web-based
application that allows the user to maintain and track rail cars in a customer’s
rail yard. Railserve worked closely with
selected customers to design and finetune it and went live at 7 Cargill operations in late 2013. The application can
be tailored to each customer’s facility by
specifying the yards, tracks, commodities, and departments unique to each
location. It was designed to be easy to
use for both customers and Railserve
employees and features drag and drop
functionality to relocate cars in the yard.
With a few clicks, current car status can
be updated individually or by selecting
groups of cars on a track. The user can
also right-click any car in the yard and
get an on- screen list of the car’s history
showing each move or change of status
for both the current and each previous
time the car was on the yard.
Cars can be automatically loaded into
Yard Tracker via EDI. Railserve worked
with several class one railroads to receive
418’s electronically on behalf of the customer. Cars can also be loaded manually
or imported from a standard flat file.
The Location Status window provides
an overview of where cars are on the
yard. This portion of the application
works much like a spreadsheet table al1
lowing the user to group, sort, and filter
cars on the yard. The user can also use
this section to generate ad hoc reports.
Yard Tracker also has standard reports to
help both the customer and switchman
review and manage the cars in the yard.
Each report can be printed or saved in a
number of formats including PDF and
office file types. Railserve is proud to
offer this application to increase efficiencies at customer locations and looks
forward to continued enhancements.

Railserve Customers Acknowledge Excellence
Please help us
recognize and reward
Railserve employees
who are doing a
great job!
Railserve customers have a powerful tool to recognize “above and
beyond” performance by Railserve
team members at their sites. When a
Railserve employee’s specific actions
make a customer’s operation safer, more
productive, or more efficient, Railserve
will add $25 to the employee’s paycheck
and circulate news of his/her effort to
Railserve’s management team.
To submit a Railserve employee for
recognition, customers should contact
any member of Railserve’s management
team and describe the employee’s efforts. Please help us recognize and reward
Railserve employees whose actions have
improved your operation!
Kimberly-Clark Recognizes Railserve
Railserve’s team at KimberlyClark’s paper mill in Mobile, AL was
recently recognized for safely and efficiently unloading 100 boxcars of scrap
paper. This raw material traditionally
moved via truck and Railserve worked
with plant personnel to design a boxcar
transloading process that decreased
production costs. Kimberly Clark
recognized the Railserve team with
a formal luncheon attended by plant
senior management.
Site Leader James Carter and
Railserve’s Mobile team are proud
to deliver value to Kimberly-Clark.
Railserve Mechanic Keith Turner main-
tains motive power onsite and Regional
Leader Scott Cabell provides encouragement and support for the operation.
Expansion for LyondellBasell
LyondellBasell has
greatly increased
the rail footprint
of their Morris,
IL plant since
Railserve began
handling switching
onsite in late 2012.
The Morris plant (60 miles SW
of Chicago) produces ethylene, used
to manufacture plastic products. A
recently-completed 400 car storage yard
enables LyondellBasell to have greater
control of railcar inventory and provide
better service to their customers
New lead tracks that connect this
storage yard to other plant areas have
increased Railserve’s work scope onsite.
Railserve Site Leader Rob Walls and
his team recently added a second crew
to provide switching 7 days per week.
The site also now has direct service
from the CSX (in addition to the CN),
which provides LyondellBasell with
supply chain flexibility. The multiple
railroad access, increased railcar storage,
and greater switching abilities position the Morris site for future growth.
Tim Hammond is Railserve’s Regional
Leader for this area and David Hester
maintains the Morris motive fleet.

Railserve REAct Heightens Safe Performance
Railserve developed and implemented
new technology to enable employees to
remotely stop locomotives with the push
of a single button worn on their safety
gear. This technology is believed to be the
first of its kind in North America
REAct (Railserve Emergency
ACTion) was created as a result of
Railserve’s ongoing safety evaluation
process. Railserve analyzed the actions
involved in hazard recognition (see
potential hazard, grab radio, open
communication, provide instruction
to stop movement, etc) and concluded
that Railserve personnel needed
the ability to act more quickly. The
technology was then developed to
design the tool to increase the ability to
respond more quickly.
When a hazard is recognized, REAct
enables authorized Railserve personnel
to stop a train without communicating
to the engineer. These life-saving seconds
can be critical when a vehicle enters a
crossing, when radio contact is lost, or
when a close clearance suddenly
arises. An emergency brake
application is activated
when personnel pushes
the REAct button on
their safety vest. The
application cannot be
reset until the crew
member pushes the
button again to
indicate that the
hazard has been
resolved.
Railserve completed
installation of REAct (and employee
training) on all Railserve locomotives
in late 2013. The data collected
revealed that an emergency stop can
be accomplished in as little as 26 feet
with REAct (compared to up to 100
feet without). The decrease in stopping
distance can prevent incidents and
reduce the risk of personal injury. Each
time REAct is used, the site completes
a near-miss report to share best business
practices among all Railserve locations.
Railserve is proud to be the only
North American operator of manned
locomotives to provide this important
safety feature.

please visit www.railserve.biz/react.html.
Railserve Values Its Roots
While it is exciting to read about Railserve’s new operations in the US and
Canada, it is important to recognize the commitment demonstrated by customers who
have recently chosen to renew their agreements with Railserve. We appreciate their
support and encouragement of our efforts and look forward to continued safe performance at their sites.

Safety Awards
Railserve’s primary commitment to
its customers and employees is to create,
main-tain, and heighten a safe operating
environment. A formal process of training,
testing, and audits forms the foundation
of our safety program, but it is each team
member’s personal commitment that
reinforces safe behaviors with every switch,
every time.
In early 2014, Railserve recognized
those locations that achieved safe performance in calendar year 2013 with
gold, silver, and bronze spike awards. It is
significant to note that Railserve handled 3.3 million carload movements for
its customers in 2013. Congratulations
to these locations and we look forward to
continued safe performance in 2014!
