Step 1: Locate the upper hinge on the backdoor of the FJ Cruiser. ! ! Step 2: Open the backdoor of the FJ and unclip the plastic cover that is in the middle of the hinge. Simply pull the ends of the cover apart and push it off the hinge. ! ! Step 3: Using a razor blade, knife, or sand paper, scrape the powder coating off the Bandi mount. You will need to scrape coating off both sides of the small bolt hole and the underside of the CB antenna stud hole. Note: Theses steps are extremely important as the CB system won’t ground properly unless the bolts and CB antenna stud have metal-to-metal contact with the mount. ! Step 4: Scrape paint off the outer part of the small hole on the hinge of the FJ. This will ensure that the mount will ground to the body of the vehicle. ! ! ! ! ! Page 3 Step 5: Attach the CB antenna stud and coax cable to the Bandi mount. Be sure the lip on the ring of the coax sets in the antenna hole on the mount. This ensures that the grounding connection on the coax is contacting the mount. Also, be sure the nylon washer is placed directly on top of the antenna mount. ! ! Step 6: From the outside of the back door, route the coax cable through the lower section of the hinge.! ! Step 7: Place the Bandi mount in the middle of the hinge and line up the small hole on the mount with the small hole on the hinge. ! ! Step 8: Using a metric size 4 allen wrench begin to thread bolt through the mount with the bolt threading toward the outside of the FJ. ! ! Step 9: Using a 7/8” wrench or your finger, hold the nut on the outside of the mount while threading the bolt. The bolt will thread into the nut and begin to tighten the mount to the hinge. Once the allen bolt is tight, you may need to tighten the nut with the 7/8” wrench to fully tighten the Bandi mount to the hinge.! ! Step 10: Thread the CB antenna into the antenna stud. Page 4 ! Routing the Coax Cable! Step 1: From the mount, direct the coax cable down the side of the door and behind the wire boot and lower hinge. You can tuck the coax cable inside the plastic paneling on the lower part of the door to further conceal/protect the cable. ! ! Step 2: Guide the coax cable under the hydraulic arm and through the small hole under the arm’s mount. Reach under the bumper and pull the remaining cable through the hole.! ! Step 3: Crawl under the rear of the FJ and you will see the large steel frame that supports the vehicle. We will be guiding the coax cable along the driver side of the frame into the engine compartment. ! ! Step 4: From in front of the rear left tire, push a piece of firm wire over the steel frame toward the back of the vehicle. ! ! Step 5: Locate the end of the wire and attach the coax cable to the wire. Pull the cable through from infront of the rear left tire. ! ! ! Page 5 Step 6: Continue to guide the coax cable along the steel frame of the FJ toward the engine compartment. ! ! Step 7: Thread the cable into the engine compartment through the gap between the frame of the vehicle and engine compartment. ! ! Step 8: Reach into the engine compartment and grab the cable, then route the cable under the parts into the upper driver side corner of the engine compartment. ! ! Step 9: Locate and remove the rubber plug that is on the back wall of the engine compartment. The plug is on the driverside of the vehicle.! ! Step 10: Cut out the center of the plug using a razor blade and route the coax cable through the plug.! ! ! ! ! ! Page 6 Step 11: The opening on the back wall of the engine compartment is blocked by fabric. You can easily route the cable around the fabric by angling the cable when pushing it through the hole. The coax will come out next to the brake mount. You may need to reach behind the fabric and grab the cable.! ! Step 12: Route the cable over the brake mount, steering column, and gas pedal and into the back of the dash. ! ! ! ! ! ! Installing the CB Radio! Step 1: Remove the center console cover by pulling up on the back of the console, next to the cup holders. ! ! Step 2: Unscrew the handle of the 4WD and remove. ! ! Step 3: Lift off the top portion of the center console! ! Step 4: Using a 10mm socket, remove the screws next to the shifter and in the bottom of the center console tray. ! Page 7 ! Step 5: After the bolts are removed, pull straight back on the center console until it releases from the dash. ! Step 6: Using the 10mm socket, unscrew the two bolts on the dash that are exposed after the center console is moved. ! ! Step 7: Using an Al or other pointed object press in on the center of the tabs on the lower area of the dash. Once the tabs release, pull the tabs out. ! ! Step 8: Grab both sides of the lower center console and SLOWLY pull forward until the clips release. Be careful as wires are attached behind the switch panel.! ! ! ! Connecting the CB radio to Power - You can power the radio using a variety of different methods and the most popular methods are:! ! • • • • ! Tapping into an existing power source! Using a fuse tap and routing the wires to the fuse box! Using a cigarette lighter plug attachment! Attaching the wires directly to the battery! We are going to power the radio by tapping into the wires of the FJ power outlet. We chose to do this as the wires are easily accessible.! ! ! Page 8 Step 10: Disconnect the plug behind the 12-volt power source. ! ! Step 11: Attach a wire tap to both the positive and negative wires of the 12volt power source. ! ! Step 12: Attach wire tap tabs to both wires on the Cobra 75 WX ST control box. ! ! Step 13: Plug the wire tabs into the wire taps. Be sure to connect the the positive on the radio to the positive wire on the power source. ! ! Step 14: Reattach the plug to the back of the 12-volt power source/ cigarette lighter. ! ! Step 15: Locate the coax cable and screw the PL-259 connection onto the coax end and attach the coax cable to the Cobra 75 control box. ! ! Step 16: Push out one of the blank switches on the switch panel. ! ! Step 17: Route the microphone connection through the open switch. ! Page 9 Step 18: From the Cobra 75 box, grab the small metal plate with a hole in the middle and the rubber grommet. Run the control box microphone cable through the metal plate and grommet, then attach the grommet to the metal plate. ! Step 19: Secure the metal plate to the face of the switch panel. You can do this using the included screws or another adhesive material. ! ! Step 20: Attach the Cobra 75 WX ST radio to the control box microphone ! connector. ! ! Step 21: Tune the CB antenna. (See instructions below) You will need to tune the antenna BEFORE reinstalling all the paneling on the FJ as you won’t be able to access the control box once the panels are reinstalled. ! ! Step 22: Reinstall the paneling and center console. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Page 10 ! Tuning the CB Antenna! Step 1: Drive to an open space that is free of buildings, power lines, and large geographical features. ! ! Step 2: Attach the SWR meter in-line between the radio and the antenna. Be sure the antenna coax cable is attached to the side of the SWR meter that says ANT and the small “jumper” cable is attach to the CB radio and the other side of the meter. ! ! Step 3: Power on the CB radio and switch to channel 1. ! ! Step 4: Switch the SWR meter to “FWD” and key the microphone (depress the button and hold it)! ! Step 5: Turn the knob on the SWR meter until the needle hovers over the mark labeled “Set” on the right-hand side. ! ! Step 6: While still keying the microphone, flip the switch on the SWR meter to the “REF” or “SWR” position. ! ! Step 7: Record the reading and release the microphone button. ! ! Step 8: Turn the radio to channel 40 and repeat steps 4 - 7.! ! Page 11 The objective behind tuning your CB radio is to make the readings on channels 1 & 40 as close as possible. Depending on the readings you receive, you will have to either lengthen or shorten your CB antenna. A reading of 1.5 or less is ideal, while a reading of 3 or more indicates an installation problem, most likely the CB mount is not properly grounded. ! ! • If the SWR reading on channel 40 is higher than channel 1, the antenna is too long and needs to be shortened. ! • If the SWR reading on channel 1 is higher than channel 40, the antenna is too short and needs to be lengthened. ! ! Step 9: Lengthen or shorten the antenna by screwing the Firestik tunable tip in (shortening) or out (lengthening) and retest the SWR. Do this until your readings are as close together as possible. ! ! Note: If you cannot get your SWR below 3 we recommend that you work through our High SWR Troubleshooting Flowchart. ! ! http://www.rightchannelradios.com/high-swr-troubleshooting-flowchart! ! Step 10: Disconnect the SWR meter and attach the antenna coax cable to the Cobra 75 control box. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Page 12 ! The CB Install is Complete, Congratulations!!
