Kevin Abbring in 2015 op hoogste niveau: testrijder
van Hyundai en deelname aan WRC-rally’s

Belangrijke rol voor Kevin bij ontwikkeling van Hyundai’s nieuwe WRCauto
Dordrecht, 13 januari 2015 - Door velen betiteld als het grootste rallytalent van
Nederland, maakt Kevin Abbring dit jaar een belangrijke stap voorwaarts in zijn
carrière. Hij heeft een contract getekend met Hyundai Motorsport om dit jaar een
belangrijke bijdrage te leveren aan de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe Hyundai i20
WRC. Daarnaast zal hij, met navigator Sebastian Marshall, in een aantal WRCrally’s aan de start verschijnen. Ook zal het koppel bij alle andere rally’s voor het
wereldrallykampioenschap de mogelijkheid krijgen om de klassementsproeven
te kunnen verkennen, waarbij de ervaring en kennis van die KP’s enorm
uitgebreid kan worden, iets wat voor de toekomst uiteraard zeer belangrijk is.
Afgelopen jaar hebben Kevin en Sebastian veel opzien gebaard in het Europees
rallykampioenschap. De Peugeot 208 T16 verkeerde nog in de ontwikkelingsfase en
kende enkele kinderziektes, maar bleek wel supersnel, zeker met Abbring aan het
stuur. Door vriend en vijand werd het team Abbring-Marshall dan ook als de snelste
equipe in het ERC beschouwd. In diverse rally’s heeft Abbring de kop van het
klassement aangevoerd, zowel bij onverharde als verharde rally’s. Ook werd door
Abbring zijn klasse gewonnen in de WRC Rally van Frankrijk.
Na een enerverend seizoen met Peugeot in 2014 gaat Kevin Abbring in 2015 met
Hyundai Motorsport in zee.

Kevin deel uit gaat maken van onze groep rijders. Hij heeft een uitzonderlijk talent en
hij heeft een grote toekomst voor zich. Wij nemen onze rol als officieel WRCfabrieksteam zeer serieus en we willen investeren in de talenten van morgen. Kevin
Abbring heeft indruk op ons en onze ingenieurs gemaakt door zijn benadering, zijn
houding en zijn vaardigheden vorig jaar tijdens het testen voorafgaand aan rally’s. Ook
hebben wij hem nadrukkelijk gevolgd in het ERC-seizoen en tijdens de rally van
Frankrijk. Hij heeft veel ervaringen met verschillende types rally-auto en zijn bijdrage
aan de ontwikkeling van onze nieuwe generatie i20 WRC-auto zal waardevol zijn. Wij
zijn blij hem als rijder erbij te hebben.”

Kevin Abbring terugkijkend op het seizoen 2014. “Het was een fantastisch jaar waarin
ik met een uiterst competitieve auto aan diverse belangrijke Europese rally’s kon
deelnemen, vaak met opvallende resultaten. We stonden dan ook bovenaan de lijst
van Peugeot Sport om in 2015 de samenwerking voort te zetten. Ook de
samenwerking met de Nederlandse importeur was uitstekend en ik ben Peugeot
erkentelijk voor de steun en de kans die ik heb gekregen. Maar aangezien Hyundai mij
de mogelijkheid bood om op het hoogste niveau, het WRC, terug te keren bij een
fabrieksteam heb ik gekozen voor Hyundai. Want acteren op het allerhoogste niveau
als fabrieksrijder was en is mijn ultieme doelstelling,” aldus Abbring.
“Verder ben ik erg blij vorig seizoen overgestapt te zijn naar een Engels “pace-notes
systeem” iets wat zeker niet simpel is en gewenning vergt. Snel daarna wierp dit al zijn
eerste vruchten af omdat ik met mijn huidige, Engelse navigator Sebastian Marshall
ben gaan rijden. Deze samenwerking is van beide zijden erg goed bevallen en wordt
dan ook gecontinueerd.”

Kevin Abbring is ambassadeur van de Stichting KNAF Talent First en van het FIA
Road Safety-programma in Nederland.
Abbring: “Autosport is topsport en het gaat niet om het nemen van hoge risico's, maar
juist om veilig aan de finish te komen. In het normale wegverkeer gebeuren veel te
vaak, te voorkomen ongevallen, bijna altijd door het niet goed anticiperen en/of het
vervolgens verkeerd reageren op de situatie. In 2011 heb ik namens de KNAF aan het
‘FIA Institute Young Driver Excellence Program’ deelgenomen en daar vervolgens nog
de 'Driver of the Year' Award heb mogen ontvangen. Tijdens de workshops die we
over de hele wereld volgden, werd steeds weer de nadruk op veiligheid gelegd. Ik zie
het dan ook als mijn taak om deze boodschap op mensen over te brengen.”
Al met al wordt 2015 dus de volgende fase in de carrière van Kevin en Sebastian op
weg naar de top.

Kevin Abbring
Kevin Abbring begon zijn rally carrière 10 jaar geleden in de rallycross. In 2005 en
2006 werd hij Nederlands en Belgisch rallykampioen waarna hij opstapte naar het FIA
Junior World Rally Championship in 2008. Een jaar later al viel hem de prestigieuze
eer te beurt dat hij de jongste rallyrijder ooit was die een JWRC-rally had gewonnen. In
2011 won Abbring het 2WD Franse Gravel Rally Championship en zijn klasse in de
Wales Rally GB. Ook won hij zijn klasse in de Rallye Monte-Carlo 2012 en werd hij
door de FIA gekroond tot FIA Driver of the Year. Vervolgens werd in 2013 de Peugeot
Rallycup gewonnen waarna hij afgelopen jaar met Peugeot aan zeven ERC-rally’s
heeft deelgenomen. In 2014 stond hij op de Azoren en op Corsica op het podium, en
was hij de winnaar van de RC2-klasse in Frankrijk.

Kevin Abbring in 2015 at highest level: test driver for
Hyundai Motorsport and participation in WRC rallys

Next step in development of most promising rally driver of the
Netherlands
Important role for Kevin at development of Hyundai’s new WRC car
Many people consider Kevin Abbring as the greatest rally talent of the
Netherlands and this year he makes an important step in his rally career. He has
signed a contract with Hyundai Motorsport to play an important role developing
the new Hyundai i20 WRC. He will also participate, with his regular co-driver
Sebastian Marshall, in a number of WRC rallies. And the duo will also have the
opportunity do the reconnaissance of all rally’s counting for the WRC 2015. This
experience and know-how of the special stages will be important for the future.
Last year Kevin and Sebastian were the revelation of the ERC. The Peugeot 208 T16
was still under development and suffered from some teething problems in the
development phase, but showed real potential, especially when Abbring was at the
steering wheel. Everybody in the rally scene considered the team Abbring-Marshall as
the fastest one in the ERC-field. In various rally’s Abbring was leading the pack, during
rally’s both on tarmac and on the loose. Abbring also won his class in the WRC Rally
de France.
After a challenging season with Peugeot in 2014 Kevin Abbring in 2015 will join
Hyundai Motorsport.

our group of drivers. He is extremely talented and he has a great future in front of him.
We take our role as official WRC manufacturer very seriously and we want to invest in
the talents of tomorrow. Kevin Abbring has impressed us with his approach and his
capacities last year during testing prior to the rallies. We also followed him during the
ERC season and the Rallye de France. He has experience with a lot of different rally
cars and his contribution to the development of our new generation i20 WRC rally car
will be valuable. We are glad he is with us.”

Kevin Abbring looks back at 2014. “It was a fantastic year in which I could compete
with a very competitive car in various important European rally’s, often with striking
results. We were on top of the list of Peugeot Sport to continue the cooperation in
2015. Also the cooperation with the Dutch Peugeot importer was excellent and I am
grateful to Peugeot for the support and the chance they have given me. But I was
offered the possibility to return to the highest level, the WRC, with a factory team, so I
have chosen for Hyundai. Because being a factory driver on the highest level of motor
sport has always been my ultimate objective,” said Abbring.
“And I am very glad that I have changed last season to the English ‘pace-notes
system’, which was not so easy and it needed some time to get used to it. But it
immediately paid off because I got a new navigator, Sebastian Marshall and he is from
England. Our cooperation was so good that we decided to continue.”

Kevin Abbring is ambassador of the KNAF Talent First foundation and the FIA Road
Safety programme in the Netherlands.
Abbring: “Auto sport is top sport and it’s all about not to take too big risks, but to arrive
safely at the finish. In the day-to-day traffic on the public road too many times
accidents happen that could have been prevented, and they almost every time happen
because people do not anticipate good and react in the wrong way to the situation. In
2011 I have participated on behalf of the KNAF in the ‘FIA Institute Young Driver
Excellence Program’ and I have received thereafter the 'Driver of the Year' Award.
During the workshops worldwide it the importance of safety was emphasized again
and again. Therefore I see it as my task to convey this message to the people”.
All together 2015 it will be the next phase in the career of Kevin and Sebastian on their
way to the top.

Kevin Abbring
Dutchman Kevin Abbring started his competitive rally career ten years ago in
Rallycross. He became Dutch and Belgium Champion in 2005 and 2006 before
progressing up to the FIA Junior World Rally Championship in 2008. Just one year
later he took the prestigious honour of being the youngest ever person to win a JWRC
round. Winning the 2WD French Gravel Rally Championship in 2011 and first in class
in Wales Rally GB and Rallye Monte-Carlo 2012 saw him crowned FIA Driver of the
Year by the FIA Institute. He has contested several rounds of the WRC and, last year,
seven rounds of the ERC – where he claimed two podiums in Azores and Corsica and
won the RC2 class at Rallye de France. He now brings this accumulated experience to
Hyundai Motorsport.

Sebastian Marshall Co-Driver
Sebastian made his co-driving debut in 2004 and has since gone on to amass a
decade of experience across different rally championships. He was selected as part of
a National Talent development scheme in the second half of the 2000s and made his
WRC debut in 2008 in Rally Deutschland. Winning the UK Pirelli Star Driver
competition in the same year, he continued to take part in WRC and IRC events, codriving Australian female driver Molly Taylor in four rounds of the WRC Academy in
2011 and various European events up to 2013. He started co-driving for Kevin Abbring
in ERC last year, a partnership that continues into 2015 with Hyundai Motorsport.
