ALL WRAPPED UP
YMCA OF MIDDLETOWN—ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
2014 STRONG KIDS CAMPAIGN
ANOTHER YEAR OF MAKING THE Y
AFFORDABLE TO ALL
The YMCA strongly believes in welcoming everyone into
the Y regardless of one’s ability to pay. In 2014 the YMCA
distributed a total of $278,000 of financial assistance.
December 2014
SAVE THE LAST LAP
On Friday, November 21, 2014, during a press
conference held at the YMCA of Middletown, the Y
announced two generous gift offers of $250,000
each towards our Save the Last Lap Campaign from
two local couples well-known for their generosity to
numerous community development projects; D.W. &
Christine Porto and Rich Rowley & Marianne Murray.
Membership Assistance Program (MAP)—$115,500
112 adults and 313 families (695 people) received financial
assistance through MAP in 2014—that’s a total of 807
people who were able to take advantage of all the benefits
of a YMCA membership.
Child Care—$138,000
84 children had an unforgettable summer during Summer Day
Camp, 24 children began their early education experience in
First Step Preschool and 111 children played safely before
and after school in the Club Kid program—all together, the Y
made a difference in the lives of 219 children by making it
possible for their families to afford these programs.
Touro College Student Discount—$14,000
140 young medical students unwind from the stress that
comes with the first year of medical school by enjoying
workouts at the Y.
Teen Initiatives—$10,500
7 teens from the Y Leaders Club connected with positive
role models at the 2014 Leaders School in Albany, NY,
where they deepened their desire to each become a positive
force in our community. 20 teens spent a weekend at the
Youth & Government Conference in Albany where they
were completely immersed in the political process to develop
and strengthen the skills and confidence needed to become
future political leaders in our community. These 27 teens
represent just a portion of all the teens the Y cultivates into
influential community leaders through programs that focus
on community service and good decision making.
The Y thanks our community partners, members, staff and
friends for making all of this possible by contributing to our
2014 Strong Kids Campaign, which raised $98,000
through donations and special events, to help the Y off-set
some of these expenses and dramatically change the lives
of so many people in our community.
D.W. & Christine Porto
Marianne Murray & Rich Rowley
In order for the Y to receive these gifts, the two
couples have challenged our community to match
their total gift of $500,000.
Maggie Smith,
STLL Campaign Chair
Under the leadership of our Campaign Chair, Maggie
Smith, the Y has already raised nearly $400,000.
We’re so close—so, if you have not yet made a
contribution to this campaign, please find it in your
heart, this holiday season to help save our pool so
the Y can continue providing lifesaving and health
enhancing aquatics programs to our community.
There are so many ways you can contribute.
Purchase STLL campaign items for sale online and at
our Welcome Center, make a one-time gift or make a
larger gift over time—every dollar gets us closer to
our goal.
To make a donation please stop by our Welcome
Center or visit www.savethelastlap.org.
MAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT
This holiday season the Y found multiple ways to spread extra holiday cheer.
Pay-It-Forward
During the month of December every new member had the opportunity to waive their own
joiner fee in exchange for a $25 gift that could be given to a friend or family members to use
towards a new membership or anonymously donated back to the Y to be given to a member
of our Membership Assistance Program (MAP). Just half way through the month almost 100%
of the gift certificates have been donated back to the Y to be given to our MAP members.
Angel Giving Tree
Our Teen Leaders Club has once again reached out to local families who need our help during
the holidays to make sure their children don't go without gifts for Christmas. The Angel Giving
Tree, displayed in the main lobby at the YMCA of Middletown, was decorated with paper angels.
On the back of each angel is the Christmas list of one of the 30 children in need of gifts this
Christmas. The gifts collected from the Angel Giving Tree are presented to each child during a
special holiday party, just for them.
Holiday Concert
On December 13th, 20 talented children and
teens performed at our Second Annual Holiday
Concert at the Galleria Mall, organized by our
Teen Leaders Club.
Holiday Challenge
Although the Holiday Challenge at the South Orange
Family YMCA focuses on fitness we found a way to
give back during this holiday season by creating
friendly competitions that required the 80 program
participants to donate food, clothing and toys.
Little Kids Doing BIG Things
Each of the Y’s 22 Club Kid sites did community service projects this year and these are just a handful of
those projects. Children at Hamilton Bicentennial Elementary collected items and created care packages
for the local Homeless. At Berea Elementary, the kids created DVDs of themselves singing and sharing
favorite holiday moments, sold the DVDs to family and friends and donated all proceeds to the Ronald
McDonald House. In an effort to answer the internet plea of the parents of a terminally ill child named
Addie Lynn, the children who attend Club Kid at The Center for Youth Programs in Middletown created
and mailed festive holiday cards for Addie that she will receive by Christmas. Otisville Elementary students
made holiday cards for the troops. Minisink Elementary and Intermediate students did a food and toy
drive for the local Humane Society.
WE WISH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY A
HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR!
