2015 4-H FAVORITE FOODS CONTEST
**This contest is open to any Benton County Youth age 5-19**
Things you need to know are explained below and on the contest outline.
Who: All Cloverbud, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4-H Club members may participate.
Also, NON-4-H friends can be in the contest, too (see note later in this letter).
When: SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 2015 - 10am-2pm
Where: Benton County Extension Office located in the Sunset Building at 4077 SW Research Way
in Corvallis. Please park in the north parking lot (back parking lot) and look for the OSU
Extension signs that will lead you into the building.
Awards: Ribbons and prizes will be awarded. (Everyone will receive something).
To Register: Call the Benton Extension Office (541-766-6750). Give your name, grade & the time you
will be judged (10am, 10:30am, 11am, 11:30 am, 12pm, 12:30pm, 1pm or 1:30pm)
Deadline: Register by telephone or come by the office no later than Tuesday, January 14th.

Cloverbuds: Cloverbuds (5-8 Years Old) may participate in the Favorite Foods Contest. They will
receive participation ribbons.
Special Notes:
• Attached is a score sheet AND an information sheet for the 4-H Favorite Foods Contest.
• Participants have a choice of coming at any of the eight time slots. (First come, First served) They

will have a chance to see each other's ideas of place settings and centerpieces and to taste each
other's food. Each member will stay approximately 1/2 hour.
Each Participant has a 4' x 3' table space for their place setting.
Participants should NOT use any alcohol in the food they make and bring to the contest. This
is because participants are underage and cannot legally buy alcohol. Using alcohol to cook with
for 4-H isn’t allowed.
Please bring TWO copies of your recipe. One for the judge and one for a recipe book.
A 4-H club or member maybe be creating a cookbook with the Favorite Foods & Food
Preparation Contest recipes for their Jr. Leader Project! If you are interested in creating this
please contact Carolyn Ashton at (541) 766-3555.
Bring a Friend: Ask a NON-foods 4-H project member or NON-4-Her to participate in the Favorite
Foods Contest! This is open to all Benton County Youth! Sign them up at the same time you do, so you can
help them and support them. Give their name, grade level & phone number and your name as their host.
They will receive 4-H ribbons just like you! And maybe this will get them interested in signing up for the
foods project or joining 4-H in the future.

REQUIREMENTS
1.
This contest is open to any Benton County Youth ages 5-19* (*not yet graduated from high school).
2.
This is a county contest only.
GENERAL RULES
1.
Select your favorite food (do not use alcohol in your food!).
2.
If part of a meal, plan a well-balanced menu into which this food item fits.
3.
Practice making this recipe until you are sure it will turn out well and that you can tell others how to do it.
Try it out on your family and friends.
4.
Plan an attractive table setting for your menu. The place setting should be for one person and should
include all that would be on the table for the course in which your favorite food is served. On day of show
you will bring:

One large dish of your favorite food.
A placemat or small tablecloth, dishes, silverware, napkins, serving dish for the favorite food you
prepared at home. (if a hot dish, something to keep it warm).
Menu for the meal in which this food is being served, printed on a small card.
A simple attractive centerpiece of fruit, flowers, etc., for your exhibit.
Recipe of your favorite food printed on a small card (you will leave this at the contest).
5.
Contestants will be judged through the personal interview method. All participants will be given an
appropriate award or recognition item.
6.
Participant, after judging, will serve his or her favorite food to guests present and act as hostess or host.
