NHAA PIPELINE
A Publication of the NH Area 43 Assembly of Alcoholics Anonymous
December 2014
We, of ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, know thousands of men
“
and women who were once just as hopeless as Bill. Nearly all have
recovered. They have solved the drink problem.
We are average Americans. All sections of this country and many of
its occupations are represented, as well as many political, economic,
social and religious backgrounds. We are people who normally
would not mix. But there exists among us a fellowship, a friendliness
and an understanding which is indescribably wonderful. We are like
the passengers of a great liner the moment after rescue from shipwreck when camaraderie, joyousness and democracy pervade the
vessel from steerage to Captain’s table. Unlike the feelings of the
ship’s passengers, however, our joy in escape from disaster does not
subside as we go our individual ways. The feeling of having shared in
a common peril is one element in the powerful cement which binds us. But that in itself would never have held us together as we are now joined.
The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution. We have a way out on which we
can absolutely agree, and upon which we can join in brotherly and harmonious action. This is the great news this book
carries to those who suffer from alcoholism.” - Chapter 2, “There Is A Solution”, Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

The Priceless Coin
I was told at an AA meeting a couple weeks ago that last month was dubbed “Gratitude Month”. It really got
me thinking; as a person in early recovery I am realizing just how thankful I should be to have been given
what is said to me a life second to none.
This past summer is a perfect example for me. As a direct result of my drinking and using I was rushed to
the hospital, and from what the EMT tells me it took them three times to finally bring me back to life. Now
what in the hell makes me so special to have made it through something like that whereas thousands each
year do not? And as I awoke and came out of the fog who was there at my bedside? I don’t really have family, it wasn’t a significant other, and it certainly wasn’t any of the people I had claimed were my ‘friends’ I
had been hanging out with. It was a gentleman in the program telling me “Don’t worry Luis, there is still
hope. You made it through, and you don’t ever have to go through something like that again.”
It’s one of those situations that reminds me of the old saying “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” Today I
thank my Higher Power for the people brought into my life. It was suggested to me that I change people,
places and things in order to successfully understand the program. “Wipe the slate clean?” I thought to myself. It has taken me a long time to grasp the concept of how important that is, I cannot stress it enough. After being able to get over that hump of literally changing EVERYTHING, I was left with a void that I filled
with the people from the halls.
God has blessed me with some pretty awesome people in my life today. I absolutely love the AA community
in my area, especially my home group. There is a vibe you get when you walk in that is so positive it consumes you. I had been wrapped up in selfishness so much during my using, now that I’m clean I have recently become a little complacent, more often than I want to.
Above all I need to remember where drugs and alcohol have brought me. Not so much dwell on it, but certainly NEVER forget. The small things in life as well as the big things mean so much to me, that I wouldn’t
trade the life I have going for anything. Sobriety has given me so much already. That second life I have been
blessed with, I believe, has partly been given to help spread the word on how amazing this new life can be.
I hope that if anything you just keep coming. I leave you with a quote I will never forget that I had heard at a
recovery center in a Father Martin video. He says, “Gratitude is the only coin in which man can buy God,”
and to me, that is priceless. God Bless.
