OVERVIEW:
This four hour CE workshop provides an introductory examination of
the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition
(DSM 5). Specific focus will be on changes between the DSM-IV-TR
and the current edition. Emphasis will be on preparing clinicians to
utilize the DSM 5 in clinical contexts, and thus attention will be given
to changes in structure, nomenclature, and symptom descriptions.
Conjunctive utility of the DSM 5 with the ICD (International
Classification of Diseases) will also be discussed. Attendees are
expected to be familiar with the DSM-IV-TR prior to taking this
workshop.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Objective 1: Attendees will gain knowledge regarding structural
changes in nosology, and in particular, the shift away from an axial
system.
Objective 2: Attendees will receive information regarding major
diagnostic revisions, and accordingly, changes in major symptom
descriptions.
Objective 3: Attendees will gain awareness of the controversies
surrounding the development and release of the DSM 5.
Objective 4: Attendees will obtain information regarding the steps
involved in the DSM 5 implementation, and its relationship with the
ICD.
The University of California, Irvine Counseling Center is approved by the
American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for
psychologist. The University of California, Irvine Counseling Center maintains
responsibility for this program and its content.
Course meets the qualifications for 4 hours of continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs,
PEPs, and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

David Cimbora, Ph.D.
serves as the Director
of Clinical Training and
an associate professor
at Rosemead School of
Psychology at Biola
University. In his 18th
year on faculty, Dr.
Cimbora teaches in
the area of
psychopathology and
in professional
development issues. He
received his Ph.D. in
clinical psychology
from the University of
Denver, Department of
Psychology in 1997. He
currently serves as the
Chair of the Council of
Chairs of Training
Councils (CCTC) and is
the Past-President of
the National Council of
Schools and Programs
of Professional
Psychology (NCSPP).
