As the youngest of five children, I have fond, family memories of the Holiday Season. At
Christmas, my mother always
made chess pie. To this day, I
look forward to my wife, Liz,
making that pie for our family
to enjoy. When I hear I’ll Be
Home for Christmas I am reminded of my time of service
in the U.S. Army and how I
longed to be home with my
family. Flavors, smells, places,
music, movies, weather, and
people evoke the nostalgia of
good memories and special
relationships. Through change
and transition, nostalgia is a
unifying phenomenon shared
across cultures, historical time
periods, and age span that connects us to the past, and anchors and comforts us in the
present. The Christmas holi-
days give sentimental pause
to reminisce and share laughter over funny, generational
stories, mourn the loss of
loved ones, and welcome
new life. The very essence of
Christmas is a redemptive
message of forgiveness, hope,
and love. The holidays are
also notorious for heightened
feelings of separation and
loneliness. Kindly sharing
hope and acceptance to those
who may be downtrodden, or
in despair, extends redemptive hope, welcomes a sense
of belonging, and encourages
belief in their self-worth and
understanding that they are
loved just as they are. Especially in this Season of Unity
and throughout the Christmas Season, the qualities of
forgiveness, kindness, hope,
love, and acceptance have
been shared through the
Jackson International Food
and Art Festival, the Employee International Christmas
Luncheon, and the Christmas
Around the World parade.
These are great reminders of
how city of Jackson employees reach into the community
to unite and befriend the citi-

zens from all cultures who call
Jackson home. What a profound
blessing and living testimony to
the daily ministry of service by
city employees. Let us all celebrate our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ, and may the peace of
Christmas and the Holiday Season abound for each of you.

City Voice: Spotlight: Robert Owens, Parks Maintenance
Robert Owens likes variety.
This was first evidenced during
his high school years in Nashville. He studied auto mechanics and thoroughly enjoyed his
art class, which is where he
first learned how to paint. His
favorite part of the class,
though, was
wood-working.
But he also, during his lunch
time, took a
welding class.
After graduation
he worked for the
city of Nashville
driving a tractor
and a dump
truck. He
worked there five years part
time and five years full time,
and then moved to Jackson in
1992. For the next six years,
Robert hustled. He cut grass,
trimmed hedges, did plumbing,
worked for Sam Husley, laid
bricks, made the mortar for the
bricks, worked for Margaret
Rosenblum at her house,
framed houses, and helped lay
the foundation for houses. Finally, in 1998, Jerry Gist hired
Robert and sent him to work
with Jerry McKinney in the
Maintenance Department.
Robert continues his love for
variety by doing electrical
work, painting, plumbing,
grilling for special events,
driving the floats for parades, and doing anything
else that is needed for the
city of Jackson. Even
though he has been in the
Maintenance Department
since 1998, Robert won first
place in the Zero Turn Mower
division of the 2014 Equipment
Rodeo! Congratulations Robert!
Robert has six children, three
of whom live with him now. He
is very active in his church –
Straightway Apostolic Church –
where he can be
found four or five
nights a week. He
still maintains his
love for variety by
using his after work
hours to cut grass, do
landscaping, paint,
fix cabinets, restore
old furniture, and
help people move.
Robert says,
“Whatever your hand finds to do,
do it with your might.” We are
glad you choose to bring this attitude to work for the city of Jackson! We are proud to have you as
our “Spotlight of the Month!”
Mayor’s Pat On The Back…
Thank you…Councilman Harvey Buchanan, City Council, for your hard work and dedication. Mr. Johnny B. Jones writes: “Dear
Councilman Buchanan, We the people of the great City of Jackson, Tennessee, would like to thank you for your hard work and
dedication that you put forward for making our city a sound and safe place to grow up and raise our kids. Councilman Buchanan,
you are a true humanitarian and we the people will be awarding up a lifetime achievement for fixing the drain hole on Gates
Street.”
Thank you…To the Mayor’s Community Action Committee for all your hard work to help make the City’s Christmas parade a
success, along with JEA, EMA, the Police Department, Keep Jackson Beautiful, the Fairgrounds, Civic Center, Jackson Downtown
Development Corporation, Sammy West, and all the volunteers. Also, we’d like to give a very special thank you to Recreation and
Parks Department, Groundskeeping, and Parks Maintenance. You are all awesome and great to work with.
Thank you from…Mayor Gist. He writes:
It takes a lot of Christmas elves to prepare the way for Santa and Christmas!
Thanks to all city employees and the Christmas Parade Committee for a wonderful evening of the Lighting of the Christmas Tree and the Annual Christmas Parade.
With help from so many- the Building Dept., Engineering, Jackson Recreation and Parks, the Mayor's Community Action/Hospitality Committee to Groundskeeping and Park Maintenance, to the sound of Jackson Police Department sirens
and flashing lights, and a ride on the back of a Jackson Fire Engine... Jolly Old St. Nick arrived!
The weather welcomed a large Christmas parade crowd and the more than 100 parade entries celebrated and helped
unite the city of Jackson in the Spirit of Christmas Around the World!
May the peace of Christmas and the Holiday Season abound for each of you!
