The ART of CAMOUFLAGE
Cosmetic camouflage can definitely improve quality of
life in patients.
Cosmetic camouflage can be very good adjunct to
other dermatological treatments for vitiligo..
Vitiligo
CAMOUFLAGE
1- Temporary * Liquid dyes
* Indigenous products
* Remedial cosmetic camouflage
* Self tanning products
2- Permanent * Micropigmentation/tattooing
Vitiligo
 LIQUID DYES….
Potassium permanganate, indigo carmine, Bismarck
brown and henna pastes were commonly used…
Disadvantage : - washed away very easy,
- color matching is very difficult…
Vitiligo
 INDIGENOUS PREPARATIONS…
(Traditional Indian Preparations)
Iron fillings (Lauha bhasma) and Suvarna Karini (Clay
mixed with henna and oils) were the most known
preparations..
Disadvantage : - color matching is very difficult..

Vitiligo
 REMEDIAL COSMETIC CAMOUFLAGE
These are the most common daily use make-up
preparations… contains % 25 more pigment to normal
make-up.
There are four basic foundations :
- Oil-based (water-in-oil, pigments suspended in oil

Vitiligo
Ideal camouflage ;
 Color , Opacity, Waterproof, Sweat resistant,
Holding power, Longer wear, Ease of application,
non-allergic/non-comedogenic/nonphotosensitizing, Sun-screening capacity, Ease of
removal, Cost-effective
Vitiligo
LIMITATIONS OF COSMETIC CAMOUFLAGE
 Difficult to apply to a large area,
 Good products are expensive,
 Smudging/wear off of creams ,because of friction,
 Difficult to apply with severe acne, infectious or
eczematous disease…
 SELF-TANNING PRODUCTS
 The most common products is Dihydroxyacetone
(DHA) – effective, cost-effective and safe for
recalcitrant vitiligo…
 Disadvantage ; difficult color matching,
allergic contact dermatitis,
DNA damage???

MICROPIGMENTATION/TATTOOING
• Permanent camouflage can be used in a wide range of
dermatological diseases…
• Inert, non-toxic, non-allergenic, tissue stable pigments (6
micron)
• Recalcitrant vitiligo ; especially digits, lips, wrists,
axillae, elbows…
• Pigment should be implanted between the superficial
and middle dermis and density of pigmentation for
good cosmetic results…

Vitiligo
 Micropigmentation is rapid, not much expensive, can be
used for areas where other techniques are difficult
(eyelid margin), and not time consuming method…
 Disadvantage : - difficult the exact color match,
- color fading,
- infection,
- contact allergy,
- Transmission of HIV, hepatitis B ??
- Koebnerization,
- used only small, localized lesions
