Heritage and Cultural Tourism

Tourism is the world’s number-one industry and the fastest
developing enterprise in Africa. A qualification in Heritage and
Cultural Tourism provides students with the necessary skills to
follow careers as tour guides, tour operators, entrepreneurs
in the tourism industry and analysts determining tourism
needs. They will also be able to take the lead as experts in the
development of cultural tourism, the management of cultural
events within the tourism milieu, the marketing of tourism, and
the teaching of tourism-related courses.
Heritage and Cultural Tourism is the major subject for the
degree BHCS specializing in Heritage and Cultural Tourism
(A.4.1 Code: 01130065)

Archaeo-tourism
Analysis of tourist and other visitations to archaeological sites.
Topics cover international and local legislation, ethics and best
practices debates on who interprets and who ‘owns’ the past
and profits from it. Also covered, are site management plans,
condition assessment and a consideration of the politics and
ethics of ‘heritage’. Case studies range from large UNESCO
World Heritage Sites to small, almost forgotten ‘places of the
past’ scattered across the globe

Toerisme is die wêreld se nommer-een industrie en die
vinnigste-groeiende bedryf in Afrika. ‘n Kwalifikasie in Erfenisen Kultuurtoerisme voorsien studente met die vaardighede om
‘n loopbaan in een of meer van die volgende sleutelterreine
te volg: toeristegidse, toeroperateurs, entrepreneurs
in die toerismebedryf en ontleders in die bepaling van
toerismebehoeftes. Hulle sal ook leiding kan neem as
kundiges in die ontwikkeling van kultuurtoerisme, die bestuur
van kultuurgebeurtenisse in die toerisme-milieu, die bemarking
van toerisme en die onderrig van toerismeverwante vakke.

Ontleding van toeriste- en ander besoeke aan argeologiese
terreine. Onderwerpe sluit in internasionale en plaaslike
wetgewing, etiek en bestepraktykdebatte oor wie die verlede
interpreteer, wie dit ’besit’ en wie ’n profyt daaruit maak.
Sluit ook terreinbestuursplanne in, kondisievasstellings en
die inagneming van politiese en etiese vereistes aangaande
‘erfenis’. Gevallestudies sluit UNESCO Wêrelderfenis-gebiede in
asook klein amper vergete ‘plekke uit die verlede’ wat dwarsoor
die wêreld voorkom
