Christmas Eve
Service
December 24, 2014
4:30 pm
“Challenged by Faith, Guided by Love”
Children are invited to stop in the Narthex to choose
a costume for the Christmas story: Mary, Joseph,
Angels, Shepherds, Wise Ones, or Animals. As
many children as desire may participate in each role,
and children may change their minds about which
role to choose.
During the service, we will tell the Christmas story,
inviting participants forward at their time in the drama.
Families, please help your child participate by going
forward and staying with them during the story telling,
if desired. Please return costumes to the Narthex at
the end of the service.
Call to Worship
One: On this Christmas Eve,
Many: May we be like Mary and Joseph, ready to listen
and willing to follow what God calls us to be and
to do;
One: May we be like the shepherds,
Many: Open to the possibility of miracles and willing to
tell the good news to all.
One: May we sing God’s praises like the angels sang
that night so long ago.
Many: May we be like the wise ones who opened their
hearts and minds to follow your leading as they
followed your star.
One: On this Christmas Eve,
All: O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord, baby
and king, light of the world!
Opening Prayer
*Hymn 41 “O Come, All Ye Faithful”
Adeste Fideles
O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem!
Come and behold Him, born the king of angels
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!
Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation!
Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God, all glory in the highest!
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord!
*All who are able, please stand.

We Tell the Christmas Story
As the Marys and Josephs come forward, we will sing
“O Little Town of Bethlehem.”
O little town of Bethlehem,
How still we see thee lie!
Above they deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light;
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
As the donkeys and cows come forward, we will sing
“Away in a Manger.”
Away in a manger,
No crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky
Looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.
As the shepherds and sheep come forward, we will
sing “The First Noel.”
The first Noel the angel did say
was to certain poor shepherds
in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.
Benediction
Silent night, Holy night!
All is calm, all is bright!
Round yon virgin mother and child!
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.
As the angels come forward, we will sing
“Angels We Have Heard on High.”
Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply,
Echoing their joyous strains.
Glo-ria, in excelsis Deo;
Glo-ria, in excelsis Deo.
Postlude “The Snow Lay on the Ground”
We welcome all who worship with us tonight. It is our
hope that you find tonight’s worship service meaningful
and inspiring, and come back often. We worship
together every Sunday at 9:30 am. If you do not have
a church home, consider following Jesus Christ
through the fellowship of this congregation. Please let
us know you were here by signing the friendship /
attendance pad. Please refrain from bringing food or
drink into the Sanctuary.
Silent night, Holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing: “Alleluia;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.”
As the wise ones come forward, we will sing
“We Three Kings.”
We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.
O star of wonder, star of night,
Star with royal beauty bright;
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.
Silent night, Holy night!
Wondrous star, lend thy light;
With the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born.
May you have a Christmas blessed with
Hope, Joy, Love, and Peace.
As the story continues, we will sing to the baby Jesus,
“Happy Birthday”
Christmas Prayer
When we finish the story, all will return to their seats
and we will light the Advent Candle as we sing
“Still, Still, Still.”
Still, still, still, He sleeps this night so chill!
The virgin’s tender arms enfolding,
Warm and safe the Child are holding.
Still, still, still, He sleeps this night so chill.
*Hymn 40 “Joy to the World”
Antioch
Joy to the World! The Lord is come:
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.
Offering Our Gifts to God
During the offering, we will sing “Silent Night”
(Lyrics on the following page.)
(Families are asked to fill in the welcoming pad found at
the center aisle and pass it along the pew and back so
you can greet each other after the service and so that
we may welcome you in the coming weeks.)
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders of His love.
