GUIDING YOUR JOURNEY TO FURTHER EDUCATION
The Drumheller Community Learning Society has been
providing non-credit adult learning opportunities for over
37 years. The classes are stimulating and fun, presented
by qualified independent instructors who enjoy introducing
others to their subjects.
The board membership is comprised of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers from throughout the Drumheller
area. As a council we desire to offer any course that you want for enjoyment or need for self-improvement. The
classes in this brochure are a sampling of what is available. Additional courses can be added if there is sufficient
interest.
The Drumheller and District Further Education Council is one of over 80 Community Adult Learning Councils in
Alberta who receive funding from Alberta Advanced Education & Technology, Community Programs Branch. Visit

Registration Policies
1. Payment is due upon registration—you are not registered until we have received payment or a credit card can be
used to reserve a spot.
2. Register early—courses lacking enrollment numbers are canceled one week prior to the course start date, unless
otherwise stated.
Cancellation Policies
If a class is canceled by the council you will be notified by telephone and a full refund will be issued.
All student initiated cancellations need a minimum of seven day notice or there will be a 35% cancellation
fee. A late cancellation can result in a class not proceeding.

Beginner’s Painting &Techniques
Stickman Art Journaling
Learn everything you need to get started painting in the
versatile and beautiful mediums of watercolour and acrylics.
There are 6 classes and topics to be covered include: Wet/
dry techniques- including glazes and dry brush, Colour
theory and Mixing-how to create harmony and contrast to
a painting, Composition- how to arrange the elements of
your painting to grab the viewer’s attention. A look at the
masters in the discipline. Students will create one complete
piece. All supplies and materials included in the fee.
Have you ever had feelings that you couldn’t find the right
words to describe? Art-journaling is a safe way to reflect on
and explore your feelings and emotions through the use of
collage and art. Come explore and play with art materials
in your own art-journal through guided projects, and see
what you can do! Some supplies will be provided by the
instructor, but students are responsible for bringing their
own scissors and hard cover sketchbook with blank pages.

Joan Marklund, B. Sc
Joan is a retired geologist and life-long writer. She obtained
her Writing Out Loud Training Certification in 2007 and
introduced her students to fearless freewriting and supportively
shared their stories. In 2014, Joan became a Journal to the
Self® Certified Instructor and now brings to Drumheller
another way to write for self-discovery and personal growth.
A member of the Writer’s Guild of Alberta, Joan is also a
local creative writing judge for the Alberta 55+ Games.

Are you envious of people whose dogs walk beside them and
listen to their commands? Learn leash manners for your pet
in a positive manner. Teach them to sit/stay and recall. You
can do all this and have fun, laugh and create a bond with
your dog for life. Only one handler per dog and no children
handlers allowed (unless previously arranged with the trainers).
Please leave your pet in the vehicle at the beginning of each
class. Wear a good pair of walking shoes. Dogs have to be
at least 6 months or older. When registered, you will receive
an equipment list and map to the Dog Off Leash Park.

Paper Piecing/Foundation Piecing

This quick and easy technique will enable you to sew
small precise quilt blocks with great accuracy by tracing

Strawberries and Cream Table Topper
After teaching for over thirty years, Ron Kenworthy retired and
became more serious about photography. He joined the Canadian
Badlands Artists Association over ten years ago and received
excellent mentoring from other members. He completed a for
credit photography course at U of C in 2004. Ron is experienced
with manual and automatic 35 mm SLR cameras and point
and shoot and SLR digital cameras. Several of his photos have
been juried into Visual Arts Alberta shows in Edmonton.

Carrie Mashon is an artist/photographer from Dorothy, Alberta.
She works mainly in acrylic and oils and scratch art. She
has been doing scratch art for about 6 years and is the vice
president of the Canadian Badlands Artists Association.
Scratch Art

Got an itch? Well, let’s scratch! Come and learn this
awesome technique using scratchboard and an exacto
knife. You will learn to take a photograph and apply to
scratchboard. The possibilities with this little known

Class that will help students increase their confidence and

Cottonwood Clay Studio is a cooperatively run studio. Whether you are experienced or a
beginner, we welcome you to find out more about our studio.

Microsoft Excel Level I - Beginner
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows you to
produce tables of numbers and perform calculations on these
tables. It also provides charting and database capabilities.
You will learn how to enter text, numbers and formulas into
the spreadsheets, create graphs, and create and print out
spreadsheets. Previous computer experience is necessary.

merges, inserting header/footers, using Quick Parts, bookmarking

healing art. When applied for the purposes of healing, it assists
the body, mind and spirit to heal. Reiki is both powerful and
gentle. It is a simple technique that can be easily learned by
anyone. This is the foundational class needed to become a
Reiki practitioner. Learn about Usui Reiki, what it is and what

Craving Change
In this 6 hour group session, you will learn how to care
for and manage your diabetes (Pre-diabetes and Type
2), specifically: diabetes myths and facts; progression
of diabetes; healthy eating; blood glucose monitoring &
control; medications; what to do during an illness; benefits
of keeping active; and adopting a healthy lifestyle
Note: As this workshop is day long, please bring a bag
lunch and any other supplies you require for the day.
Three, 2-½ hour sessions for anyone who
wants to feel more in control of eating.
Weight Wise
Helping adults find ways to reduce health risks through
healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, and
goal setting. The program is delivered in partnership

Heart Wise – Managing Cholesterol and Blood Pressure
In this 3 hour group session, you will learn: high blood pressure
causes, risk factors and complications; high cholesterol causes,
risk factors and complications; heart healthy lifestyle choices
and how to manage your own heart health; how to measure
your own blood pressure; understand what “heart healthy”
foods are; and have a goal to eat healthier and live better!
Note: Clients are encouraged to bring their
own blood pressure machine to class.

Self-Management Education
Six 2½ hour sessions that you will learn skills needed to
manage the day to day challenges of living with a long term
health problem, such as: problem solving; goal setting;
developing action plans and relaxation techniques; how to
eat healthier and live more actively; how to work well with
your healthcare team; how to manage emotions such as
fear, frustration and anger; and how to live life fully.
Respiratory Education
One, 2-½ hour session for people diagnosed with chronic lung
condition e.g. COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
• In these sessions you will learn:
• What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)?
• Factors that can make your symptoms worse;
• Helpful breathing tips;
• Review of common respiratory medications.
