Holiday Safety
The holiday season is in
full swing. Did you know
that between 2006- 2010
in the United States firefighters responded to 230
residential structure fires
involving Christmas trees?
These fires caused 4 civilian deaths and 21 civilian
injuries and resulted in
$17.3 million in direct
property damage.

tion.
Electrical problems were a
factor in one third of these
fires. A heat source to
close to the Christmas tree
was responsible for 20%
of these fires and about
15% of these fires had
involved decorative lighting. When picking a tree
choose one with fresh,
green needles that do not
fall off when touched.
When placing the tree, you
should cut 2" from the
base of the trunk before
placing the tree in the
stand.
Make sure your tree is at
least three feet away from
any heat source. Heat
sources like fireplaces,
candles, and heat vents.
