APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1) Nomination from the Home University via email.
2) Nominated students receive the application materials via email.
3) Nominated students complete and return the application materials + additional
documents. These documents can be sent through the International Relations
Office of the Home University.
4) Accepted students receive the Acceptance letter with the approved subjects.
5) Accepted students can request their Student’s Visa at the Spanish Consulates
(if applies).
VISA REQUIREMENTS
Students that are citizens of a country of the EU, the EEA or Switzerland, holders of an
identity document or a valid national passport do not require a Visa. If the stay is longer
than 3 months, then students shall register at the “Registro de Ciudadanos de la
Unión”.
Students that are citizens of a country outside the EU, the EEA or Switzerland and their
stay is longer than 90 days must obtain a student’s visa from the nearest Spanish
embassy or consulate before leaving their home country. In this case, a student visa
is mandatory for any foreigner wishing to study in Spain. Application for a
student’s visa requires the acceptance letter from ESCI.
Important:
1) A tourist visa is not enough to allow to study in Spain.
2) If the stay in Spain lasts more than six months, the student shall make sure that
the obtained visa allows him/her to apply for a student’s residence permit,
“Autorización de estancia por estudios”, in Spain.
3) If the student gets a 180-day student visa with only one Schengen Area Entry,
he/she will not be allowed to extend the stay for a longer period and will not be
able to leave Spain and enter again.
MEDICAL INSURANCE
It is compulsory to obtain a the medical insurance valid in Barcelona for the period of
stay
• If the student is a citizen of a member country of the European Economic Area
or Switzerland, and entitled to coverage under the social security system of
your country, then he/she must be a European health Insurance Card holder,
which can be obtained from the public health authorities of the home country.
While the European Health Insurance Card gives EU citizens access to
medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in
Spain, the EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance. It does cover
NEITHER accidents NOR any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight
to your home country or lost/stolen property. Moreover, the EHIC does NOT
cover your costs if the student is traveling for the express purpose of obtaining
medical treatment.
All international students, including Erasmus, are required to have full coverage
of eventual risks during their stay in Spain and ESCI-UPF will check that at
least an accidents and travel insurance (Univer Incoming Basic) has been
contracted to complement the EHIC. These are the minimum requisites.
Besides, we recommend considering other benefits packages offered to UPF
students at a special price where there is a provision for medical care up to a
limit of expenses.

•
Students that are citizens of a country outside the EU must find out whether
there exists a mutual health provision agreement between the Social Security
system of the home country and Spain (this is the case of a number of Latin
American countries). If such an agreement exists, it is possible to obtain a
document from the relevant authorities in the home country entitling to free
medical coverage in Spain. If not, prior to departure, the student shall take out a
private medical insurance to cover the duration of the stay at ESCI. The
following company offers a benefits package to UPF students at a special price:
