WELCOME
Welcome to the spring 2015 programme at
Falmouth’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts.
This season sees us continuing to bring pioneering
new work from leading dance, theatre and music
groups to Cornwall – from the emergent to the
internationally-acclaimed. Many shows, such as
Aakash Odedra on 16 & 17 January, are presented
both in the evening and in the afternoon as a free
schools’ matinee, enabling many Cornish children
to see great work in a world-class facility.
As our regular events, such as First Friday
Performing Arts Networking Event and Amnesty
International evening continue, some new
initiatives are being launched: Open Studio
Mondays offers artists and companies across
the region the opportunity to make use of our
resources, and we are soon to commence some
new weekend dance classes for young people.

WINDEREN
Wilkie Collins was a Victorian thriller
writer, author of ’The Woman in
White’ and many other well
known tales – but who knew
he came to Cornwall? In the
summer of 1850, hoping to
make his name as a writer,
Collins commenced a
walking-for-pleasure tour of
Cornwall, which resulted in
his book, ‘Rambles Beyond
Railways’. Using words,
music and film, Jak Stringer
retraces his footsteps, with the
aim of bringing the intriguing
and humorous stories from this
forgotten book alive once more.

Falmouth graduates Cheap Date, a brand new
dance company, present two original works:
Born from a creative yearning to collaborate and
explore ideas about the anatomy, movement, and
the complexities of the human body and focusing
on the physicality of the dancer; Bi-Linear creates
beautifully engineered apparel. Clothing is
stripped back to its bare essentials, designed
fundamentally for the human body- a living,
breathing machine.
The hospitality industry makes up ten percent of
the UK’s workforce. Revealing the secrets behind
the service, Every Day Theatre have interviewed
the waiters, chefs, managers and bar staff that
serve the nation’s customers. This brand new

Valentine’s Day proposals to the arguing couples,
the regulars, the drunk, the rude to the simply
odd, building a hilarious and insightful picture
of the UK today.

WALKING ARTS
BEST BEFORE END
9.30 - 16.30
Curious was formed in 1996 by Leslie Hill and
Helen Paris and has developed a reputation for
edgy humorous interrogations of contemporary
culture and politics.
A symposium hosted by Falmouth University’s
‘Articulating Space Research Centre’ in partnership
with the ‘AHRC Walking Artists Network’.
The AHRC funded Walking Artist Network
has found a growing interest and multiplicity
in contemporary practices, forms and
methodologies that might define walking
as a mode of art practice. Practitioners and
researchers across disciplinary perspectives
have contributed to a sustained dialogue on the
developments of these practices through WAN
and the Footworks Research Group. For the final
Footworks meeting the group will walk in Hayle,
Cornwall, to consider issues such as the politics of
walking, its regional particularities, its connections
to and connecting of places, and how it relates
to wider cultural sensibilities and structures.
Together with WAN, Falmouth University’s
Articulating Space Research Centre hosts this daylong symposium to consider Footworks’ findings
and manifestos for the future of walking arts.

Penryn Campus, Falmouth University
19.30
As with all Curious shows, Best Before End starts
with a question: ‘Can you ever say all the things
that need to be said before it’s too late?’
It’s about failing and falling with a hint of
fermenting. It’s about finding the right words
when the words are hard to find.
Contemplating the ultimate and inevitable frailty
of the human condition, Curious present a show
of sell-by dates and quiet surprises. Objects
transform as the performance evolves, with Helen
Paris navigating a minefield of the unspoken with
only some cryptic crossword clues, the hokeycokey and BBC football scores to guide her.
‘Best Before End is a touching rendition of
what it means to grow older’
Bryony Byrne, Aesthetica

THE SONVA RESEARCH GROUP
GIVING VOICE
DARK SOUND: DESTRUCTIVE POP 2015
19.30
Keynote speaker: Professor Hillegonda Rietveld.
The Dark Sound symposium brings together
music lovers, musicians, researchers, writers and
artists in an event dedicated to dark pop and its
recurring themes of lost love, melancholia, death
and desire.
Over the course of three days and nights, a series
of papers, live performances, workshops and
fixed media works will explore the destructive
character of dark ‘popular’ music as it embodies
darkness and haunts the threshold of shifting
cultural understandings of ‘high’ and ‘low’ art.
