Views from the Southbank I:
Histories, Memories, Myths
Orijit Sen:
From Punjab, with Love
Marking the Gallery’s 40th anniversary, Views from the
Southbank I presents artwork that engages with the stories of
Surrey and the surrounding South of Fraser region—its cultural
legacies, individual memories, and collective myths. This
exhibition features art from the Gallery’s permanent collection
along with artworks borrowed from private collections. This
project is the first of a three-part series of exhibitions titled
Views from the Southbank that will run throughout the year.
Based on his famous mural at the Virasat-e-Khalsa
Museum in Anandpur Sahib, India, Orijit Sen’s From Punjab,
with Love chronicles the daily life, history, myths, and festivities
of the Punjab region through the centuries. This 2.4 x 9.1 metre
mural is presented in partnership with Indian Summer Arts
Society, with support from the Province of British Columbia and
Simon Fraser University.

Past and present biological and geological imagery is

Robert Davidson: Supernatural Eye
Inspired by the many supernatural beings that dwell in Haida
Gwaii, this large-scale aluminum sculpture’s graceful contours
and bold colour combine the traditional visual iconography of
Haida art with a contemporary aesthetic. The sculpture was
commissioned by Polygon Homes, and is on exhibit at the
Gallery until its permanent home is ready.
