CHA C NGE ALEND S – S AR EE P AGE 10 Views from the Southbank I: Histories, Memories, Myths Orijit Sen: From Punjab, with Love Marking the Gallery’s 40th anniversary, Views from the Southbank I presents artwork that engages with the stories of Surrey and the surrounding South of Fraser region—its cultural legacies, individual memories, and collective myths. This exhibition features art from the Gallery’s permanent collection along with artworks borrowed from private collections. This project is the first of a three-part series of exhibitions titled Views from the Southbank that will run throughout the year. Based on his famous mural at the Virasat-e-Khalsa Museum in Anandpur Sahib, India, Orijit Sen’s From Punjab, with Love chronicles the daily life, history, myths, and festivities of the Punjab region through the centuries. This 2.4 x 9.1 metre mural is presented in partnership with Indian Summer Arts Society, with support from the Province of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. January 31 to August 2, 2015 January 17 to March 15 Re:Source–A Living Archive 1975–2015 Crescent Beach Photography Club: Global Views Artists-in-residence Jim Adams, Polly Gibbons, Cora Li-Leger, Haruko Okano, and Mandeep Wirk will present an evolving exhibition documenting the Gallery’s 40 years of exhibitions and events programming. This group exhibition features more than 40 recent artworks in a variety of subject matter using film or digital processing. Images range from iconic monuments like Tower Bridge in London and the Eiffel Tower in Paris to beaches and buildings closer to home. January 17 to December 13, 2015 Through February 8 Taryn Hubbard: Surrey City Centre née Whalley Art by Surrey Elementary School Students In this first exhibition of Open Sound 2015: Polyphonic Cartograph, local artist Taryn Hubbard presents a multi-channel soundscape of Surrey’s new City Centre and surrounding community. January 17 to March 22, 2015 See new works by students from the Surrey School District’s elementary schools (including those in White Rock), accompanied by artist and teacher statements. Developed with the Surrey School District and Surrey Art Teachers Association. Part of the annual Fine Arts Festival des Beaux-Arts, an event organized by the School District to recognize arts programming in Surrey schools. February 14 to April 26 Visit Surrey’s UrbanScreen venue projecting art after dark The Space of Difference Past and present biological and geological imagery is coupled together like digital rollage art and rotating billboards as the video matrix responds to the movement of the SkyTrain. Robert Davidson: Supernatural Eye Inspired by the many supernatural beings that dwell in Haida Gwaii, this large-scale aluminum sculpture’s graceful contours and bold colour combine the traditional visual iconography of Haida art with a contemporary aesthetic. The sculpture was commissioned by Polygon Homes, and is on exhibit at the Gallery until its permanent home is ready.
