The last term has personally been the most challenging since joining the staff at SCVYS. The external environment is as
tough as I have known it, with the pending closure of much of the statutory youth service now imminent, the ongoing need
within local voluntary youth organisations for access to funding opportunities, capable volunteers and suitable, affordable
premises continues to grow.
Internally, the capacity of the team has been stretched with a number of pieces of work originally planned to run one after
another, all coming together simultaneously, which was due to factors beyond our control. I would like to say a big thank you
to them for their hard work delivering over and above their core roles in recent weeks. For most of us, Christmas cannot
come soon enough.
I am delighted to welcome Lucy Cox, who joined SCVYS in early November from Support Staffordshire
Cannock Chase. Lucy has already fitted into the team really well, has been quick to learn the recent history
around local youth services and shown a willingness to get stuck into supporting member groups in Stafford
and South Staffordshire with their current challenges.
The AGM in November was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. If you missed it, read the article inside and
contact the office if you want a copy of our accounts and/or annual report.
Lucy Cox,
Development Worker
Please keep an eye out for your local District Commissioning Prospectus due out around now. It may not be
immediately obvious that this process almost certainly includes funds allocated to supporting new local
youth provision. Each district is doing things slightly differently, so if you need advice or help, contact your Development
Worker.
In addition to these local funds, SCVYS is pleased to announce the launch of a brand new Transition Fund. This funding will
only be available for the next few months, and is designed to support voluntary youth organisations impacted by the closure
of the youth service. See inside for more details on specific areas of support.
In addition to the new funds mentioned above, SCVYS is now able to offer member groups the Grantfinder tool, but initially
only for the next 10 months. The tool will help groups to identify the most relevant and applicable funding sources to apply to
for the activity, project or programme you are planning to provide. Again see more details inside, and don’t forget to book an
appointment with your local Development Worker.
Finally on the funding side of things, plans are being made to bring significant European funding (£25 million through until
2020) into Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent through the Local Enterprise Partnership. The programme, called Building Better
Opportunities, will focus on skills, employment and social inclusion activities under five themes. The big difference is that the
voluntary sector is being encouraged to come together as consortia to bid for the money. There is a development phase
running until June 2015, and then a two stage application phase, which means that successful consortia are unlikely to be
funded until well into 2016. If you want to know more, please register an interest so SCVYS can keep you informed of
progress. SCVYS are keen that local groups who already support people under these themes are able to access funding to
continue to make a positive local impact.
Finally, I want to thank you all for your contribution to children and young people this year, may your Christmas be full of joy
and celebration, and your New Year full of hope and expectation.

SCVYS AGM
We were pleased to see so many members at our AGM that
took place on 13th November at Staffordshire Girlguiding
Headquarters. As well as the formal business, we highlighted
some of SCVYS achievements from 2013-14, these included:
delivery of 210 free training places, awarding
£45,174.65 in Local Support Grants and providing
308 free DBS checks for volunteers. You can find
further information in our Annual Report, visit our website
www.staffscvys.org.uk.
We enjoyed presentations from Lee Bates of Community Together CIC and Ian
Atherton of Staffordshire Clubs for Young People. Nikki Leadbetter also
introduced a video showing some of the highlights from the recent Ivanovo
Youth Delegation visit to Staffordshire.
Chairman, Keith Walker, gave thanks to all members for their hard work and
commitment and for providing a diverse range of activities for the Young People of Staffordshire. Special
thanks were also given to John Barker who retired from the SCVYS board of trustees after many years of
service.

Ivanovo
Ivanovo visitors to Staffordshire
Nikki Leadbetter was chatting about the brilliant time
she had had in Russia and saying how Stafford had
invited the Russians for a return visit in October. I
was thrilled when Nikki asked me if I would host one
of the Russians for the week of their visit – fortunately
mom and dad agreed that this sounded like fun! As
the 23rd October drew nearer – I got really excited at
the thought of actually spending a whole week with a
group of eight people who normally live 2,151 miles
away from me!
I finally got to meet
Alyona at midnight on
Thursday. She was really
tired after their long
journey, but we still had
an excited chat on the
way home and then we
both fell into bed. It was
really great to wake the
next morning and remember who was staying with
us. Mom and I crept around trying not to wake Alyona
too early – but eventually took her a cup of tea to
wake her. This was Alyona's first experience of British
tea drinking – tea with milk in!! I don't think we
converted her to this drink!! Mom drove us into
SCVYS Stafford where we met up with all the
members of the Russian delegation: Alyona, Alyonka,
Anastasia, Lubov, Tania, Ksenja, Sergey and Alexei.
And so began a wonderful week.
We had many trips out, starting
with a visit to Y.M.C.A in Burton,
where we were treated to a trip
around Burton Brewery. Nikki took
Alyona, Lubov and me to our
Scout group – '1 st Armitage
Scouts' – in the evening. It was
lovely to introduce them to all my
scouting friends. Once at home,
we rounded the evening off with a
game of monopoly. On Saturday
morning we went to the National
Arboretum in Alrewas, it was a
warm sunny day and we all enjoyed
our walk around the monuments,
including the memorial for the
Y.M.C.A.
In the afternoon we visited Erasmus Darwin House
and St. Mary's Centre in Lichfield, before having a
meal out and going on a ghost walk around the City.
Sunday was a quieter
day at Weston Village
Hall, taking part in a
Youth Summit – I took
the opportunity to award
Alyona and Lubov our Scout groups neckerchief and
badges!
Tuesday saw us at JCB,
then back to Stafford for
some essential
shopping!! That evening
the host families were
invited to join us for an
evening together.
A couple of highlights were
Alyona's beautiful singing
and learning both Russian
dance moves and a 'chain
dance' which had
us all
in stitches!!

Ivanovo
All too soon it was
Wednesday and after a visit
to the Council offices, the
Russian delegation were
heading
back
to
Manchester.
My favourite day was our
trip to London. This was an amazing day – we
travelled on the underground and the river boat, we
also walked a lot and saw
many of the sights of
London including:
Buckingham Palace, the
Tower of London, Tower
Bridge, Houses of
Parliament, Big Ben and
the first ever Y.M.C.A. I
have been to London
before, but I really
enjoyed being there with my new Russian friends.
Now all this activity needed a lot of energy, but
fortunately we were very well fed throughout!! We
had apple pie, scone and cream, Staffordshire
oatcakes, fish and chips, pizza,
p u b m e a l s a n d b u ff e t s . I
thoroughly enjoyed my time with
the Russians and also the
SCVYS team and Beth, Conor
and Sam. I made some great
new friends and even though
they had to return to Ivanovo, I
hope that we will remain friends
and may meet up again – for
more fun, food and friendship!

Comments from delegates
SAM – “This was the second best week of my life, the best week
being my visit to Ivanovo last year! Thanks for involving me in the
planning and delivery of the visit”
TANYA – “The friendship evening was the best night ever!”
“What a strange feeling, when you’re back home! Everything is
so different. Or, maybe, we are different. We have changed. Well,
we experienced a lot together! We shared our hearts, minds,
culture, experience, love and kindness. We became closer.
Thank you for this wonderful, unforgettable time together!”
ELLIE – “I have made some great new friends and will definitely
be keeping in touch. My highlight was the trip to London, seeing
all the amazing sights and doing it together as an international
group was special”
ALENA – “I am so happy that I was in England! Thank you
SCVYS for this wonderful trip! I am really excited about this trip!
Thank you so much guys! I want to say thank you again to my
host family! It was pleasure to know you!”
SERGEI – “I enjoyed everything about the visit. I want to say
thank you to my host family for their kind hospitality, I will never
forget you.”

in making this delegation visit so memorable. Let's all play our
part in keeping in contact and hopefully soon we’ll be meeting to
plan the return visit”
LUBOV – “The City of Lichfield was amazing; seeing and
experiencing the history and the architecture was truly
memorable”
BETH – “It was great during the visit to the National Memorial
Arboretum to see the different memorials and to walk and talk
together. I hate to admit it but I nearly cried when I left the
delegation in Manchester. It has been such a good week, tiring
but good”
ALYONKA – “My favourite part of the visit was the boat trip on the
Thames. To see and experience London from the river enabled
me to take some great photographs and take away lots of great
memories.”
ALEXEI – Leader of Ivanovo Youth Delegation
“Thank you for all of the aspects of the programme. The selection
of excellent host families and the care you have put into every
last detail means a lot to me. I know the young people also
appreciate this, and it has made our first youth delegation visit to
Staffordshire a great success”
NIKKI – “Just seeing everyone enjoying themselves throughout
the week has made all the hard work involved in preparation and
planning worthwhile.”
ANASTASIA – “I still cannot believe that it was. That we were
together, talked, worked and travelled all together - Russian and
English guys! Thank you SCVYS, host families and Ivanovo
YMCA for organizing it!
PHIL – “Once again this partnership link has been a catalyst for
cultural exchange, developing friendships and lots of fun between
English and Russian young people. In these challenging times of
international relations, these programmes provide hope for a
future where mutual understanding, respect and collaboration is
central.”

On Friday 7th November 100 people wrapped up to spend the night in a
cardboard box in order to raise money for Burton YMCA's annual Sleep
Out event.
The 100 people, including families and representatives from local businesses and schools,
described the night as eye opening and a small insight into the life of a homeless person.
For all of them this was just one night, but for the 72 people a night that the YMCA house, they
knew this as a way of life.
These people, due to the generosity of the community, now have a place to
call home and the support they need to look forward and rebuild their life.
In response to the homelessness need, Burton YMCA has built Reconnect, a
facility which now houses 19 adults and provides communal space to work
eat and relax. Money raised from last year's Sleep Out meant that they
added three new rooms to Reconnect - taking three more people off the
streets and giving them a place to call home.

Staffordshire Young Farmers bring
home the silverware again!
Staffordshire Young Farmers have just had a very
busy weekend at the English Winter Fair, with
organising the one day competitions held on
Sunday and also entering teams in the full range of
Stock and Carcase Judging Competitions over the
two days, 15 & 16 Nov, of the show.
Once again this year, Staffordshire YFC picked up
some silverware again in the NFYFC Live and Carcase
Judging Competitions. Matthew Wright, from Eccleshall
YFC is in his last competing year as a YFC member and
was not only placed first in the Beef Live and Carcase, he
and team mate Sally Leese also won the Smithfield Trophy
for the highest scores on the day, which was also won by
Staffordshire YFC last year.
Matthew was also placed as the highest scoring individual
in the Beef Live and Carcase Competition and not far
behind was Peter James from Leek YFC in third place.
The Senior Competition as a team was hard fought and
Staffordshire came away with third place with Matthew
Wright from Eccleshall YFC and Katie Wilson from
Uttoxeter YFC gaining 552 points in the Beef and Pig
Classes. Matthew said “Last year I was so pleased to win
in the Lamb Live and Carcase Competition and this year I
have taken the first place for the Beef Live and Carcase. I
am very passionate about Stockjudging and feel very
proud to be successful in both classes at such a high level.
As it is my last year as a competing member, I couldn’t
have asked for a better result this weekend.”
A new young duo from Eccleshall YFC, Emily Cartmail and
Sally Leese were awarded with the Mark Madders Trophy
for the highest placed Intermediate Team judging the Beef
and Pig classes. Sally was also placed third individually in
the classes over the weekend. For both Sally and Emily,
this was their first time taking part in the NFYFC Live and
Carcase competitions and they were both delighted to be
bringing back home the silverware again to Staffordshire.
Overall the Staffordshire team were placed second, with
the first place award going to Gwent YFC, who were just
17 points ahead on the weekend.
In addition to the NFYFC Competition, the English Winter
Fair YFC classes were also held as a one day competition
on Sunday. The home team came away again with a
number of certificates and prize money.

Staffordshire Young Farmers getting
into the festive spirit!
Staffordshire YFC held their second Very Vintage
Christmas Fayre on Thursday 4th December at the
Ingestre Suite on the County Showground, Stafford.
After taking bookings from 48 stall holders including
many local craft persons, artists, clothing shops and
local food produce, the room looked extremely
festive and inviting.
Over 260 people attended and
supported the evening,
enjoying a glass of mulled
wine and a mince pie on
arrival. Eccleshall YFC
provided delicious freshly
made crepes for those who
hadn’t managed to eat before
heading out on the evening, which was very well received.
Members from across the County along with many vice
presidents, supporters and associates of the Federation,
enjoyed the festive atmosphere and starting their
Christmas shopping.
Tina Turner of Cushions Initially afterwards said
“Thoroughly enjoyed it!! Well organised and well attended
too, lovely evening!”
Many stall holders commented
on what a lovely atmosphere
Staffordshire YFC had created
and how friendly everyone
was. The Federation has
confirmed their date for the
same event again next year –
Thursday 3rd December 2015
and are already getting

fundraising through the year. All
monies raised from the evening go
towards the running costs of their

Red Cow Werrington Golf Tournament
raises £1,600 for disadvantaged children
The second major Red Cow Golf Tournament will be helping youngsters in the area with a bumper donation of £1,600 to
Kidz2Kidz which is a Werrington based charity fund established by the Werrington Young Persons Support Group who
received £1,000 last year. After just one year the Kidz2Kidz fund gained national recognition and has helped to put the
village on the map.
Kidz2Kidz was formed last year and gave £20,000 worth of toys donated by Co-operative customers from local shops to
hospices and to disadvantaged youngsters in the local area who would not have received Christmas presents. In addition
over 80 distressed mums in local refuges who were penniless received £25 each to see them over Christmas. This year’s
target is to raise over £5,000 which the group has now hit as a result of the Red Cow donation. As well as toys and financial
aid, up to 200 mums will also receive a special toiletry pack including basic essentials and cosmetics worth £20.
Sponsored by the Red Cow the golf event was organised by Tony Simpson and took place at Whiston Golf Club. The winner
was Phil Owen, second was Mick Vasquez, and third was Tony High. This is the second major charity event sponsored by
the Red Cow and it proved to be an even bigger success than last year.
Jean Fryer Secretary of the Young Persons Group said that the donation was greater than their wildest dreams and
commented – “The Red Cow have already done so much for the village since Craig and Michael re-opened just a short
while ago. They promised to make the Red Cow a community centre for the village and they have certainly done that,
having already donated towards Werrington in Bloom and the Werrington Young Persons Support Group. This remarkable
donation will help us to continue our work with disadvantaged youngsters who are the generation of tomorrow”.
Presentations at the Red Cow included a special award to Phil Hawkesworth who once again raised
nearly half of the sponsorship funds. After the presentations everyone enjoyed a superb buffet.
Organiser Tony Simpson said that as well as raising funds for an important good cause the event
had been a great success for the players and commented – “On this special day the camaraderie of
all the players was wonderful and we had the best of both worlds, a great day playing golf and
helping disadvantaged youngsters into the bargain. What could be better?”
The cheque presentation with – Left to Right – Jean Shaw Kidz2Kidz Treasurer,
Michael Smith from the Red Cow, Jean Fryer Kidz2Kidz Secretary
and Tony Simpson Red Cow Golf Tournament Organiser.
Exemplary Werrington youngsters exciting go-karting trip
The Werrington Young Persons Support Group Friday Club has been on its third trip to Fast Lane Karting in Fenton and as
on previous visits the youngsters were complimented by the track manager on their good behaviour but
this time there was a special moment when following races were stopped to allow a picture to be taken of
the group actually on the track during which the youngsters were congratulated over the Tannoy for all to
hear.
Chairman David Shaw said that he was proud of the way in which the children
behaved which was an accolade for the youth of Werrington and commented "It is wonderful to see the youngsters having a great time in such an exciting
environment and acting so responsibly. I would also pay tribute to Fast Lane
Karting for the way in which they treat our group and the precautions they take
to ensure safety".
The Werrington Friday Club is one of the most successful in Staffordshire and
plans are already in place for a programme of trips for the spring term which
include return visits to Go-Karting and Ice Skating plus a special
intergenerational trip in commemoration of WW1 to the Imperial War Museum
in Manchester which will include the older generation residents to recount stories of
their youth. All trips are funded by the group and both youngsters and residents only
contribute a token amount.

SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMME 2015
During the busiest weeks of the summer Beaudesert put on
additional events and competitions for their visitors to take part
in. They run the same programme over the following weeks:
18th to 23rd July; 25th to 30th July; 1st to 6th August
The programme starts with a meeting for leaders on the
Saturday evening. This is a chance for you to have a cup of
tea with the staff, meet other leaders and find out about the
site, trips, activities, and free competitions on offer for the
week and sign your group up for the competitions and
activities.
On Sunday, there is a short service of worship for all
denominations. Group participation is encouraged and they
like young people to take an active part by doing readings and
saying prayers.
Test your skills on the volleyball court (grass
of course!) in their competition on Monday
or put your thinking caps on for the problem
solving competition on Tuesday!
Camp wouldn’t be camp without the
traditional campfire! This will take place on
Wednesday evening in the campfire hollow. Join in and show
everyone your campfire sketches, teach others a new song or
simply enjoy joining in. Budding “Robin Hoods” and “Maid
Marians” step forward for the Thursday archery competition,
and round off your week with a disco in the evening.
SUMMER TRIPS 2015
In addition to the free events that Beaudesert put on, they can
arrange trips for groups to various destinations (charges apply
for all trips), which can be booked for any date between 1st
June – 28th August (excluding weekends).
Destinations include: Drayton Manor, Cosford, Swadlincote
Ski centre, Black Country Living Museum, Trentham Monkey
Forest and climbing in the Peak District. For more details,
including costs and a booking form, please telephone
Beaudesert Park on 01543 682278.
NEW ACTIVITIES FOR 2015
Beaudesert are continuing to improve and expand their activity
provision. This year they have added a new activity - the
Eliminator! – a vertical
assault course, the aim
is to promote selfconfidence and
teamwork through the
duration of the
challenge. Without both
of these attributes it is
not possible to achieve
the goal of reaching the

top!
They have also increased the number of Monkey trees, and
lowered the minimum age for the Jacobs Ladder to 10.
Finally, Beaudesert are in the process of purchasing the
equipment to be able to offer archery to groups or individuals
with limited mobility. These specially designed frames make
firing the arrow possible without the need to hold a bow,
enabling the participant to take part from a standing or sitting
position, and reducing the amount of pressure required.
PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR
The site has been approved by the West Midlands Ambulance
service to have a Public Access Defibrillator installed. This will
be stored in a secured box, which can only be opened with the
access code obtained by calling 999. In an emergency
situation, the defibrillator gives step by step instructions to the
user, and can assist in saving a life. The cost of the defibrillator
and secure case is estimated at £995, and Beaudesert are
currently fundraising to meet the cost.

Burton Venture Trust
Saturday 20th September saw members of Burton Venture Trust climbing
and bouldering at “The Roaches” – their favourite climbing venue set in a
beautiful area of the Staffordshire Moorlands.
BVT members, once again, enjoyed a safe day on some very challenging
climbs but had to cancel the bouldering in the morning due to very wet
and slippery rocks, although they did take the group through the
“squeeze”.
The other disappointment was the midges! Most of the BVT members
were badly bitten, in spite of using insect repellent. Regardless, everyone
enjoyed plenty of good climbs and a very useful abseil and a cup of tea
afterwards at The Roaches Tea Room!
The archery event at Foremarke Hall on Sunday 21st September was
very much appreciated by the school; the archery opportunity BVT
provided helped to continue their relationship with the school and
the mutual support they have both enjoyed over many years.
The school provides BVT with swimming pool facilities where they
can do their capsize training, something which is massively
appreciate.
A river trip took place for a group of young canoeists on Saturday 27th
September. Starting with a breakfast planning meeting (an excuse to
enjoy a Macs Café meal) and then enjoyed a leisurely canoe down the
river in a trip arranged for their very young members. BVT Trustee, Jenny
Spiers, joined them for the trip and it proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable
paddle down the river. BVT would like to thank staff members John, Iain,
Mick and Chris Mundin.
The Presentation Evening in early November was a really enjoyable
night – by far the best attended ever. The venue put out 100 chairs
and had to get a lot more!
The evening also gave BVT the opportunity to thank some of those
who had supported them with equipment during the year;
Cllr Dennis Fletcher and both Burton and Bretby Rotary.
Congratulations to the 24 youngsters who had completed their BCU
Awards and were also given their certificate during the evening.
Finally, a thanks to the Mayor for coming along to present the
certificates.
MP Andrew Griffiths was generous with his time when BVT visited
Westminster Palace and took BVT members on a two hour tour of the
Houses of Parliament. Lisa Taylor, expressed how they all felt .. “the boys
and I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the trip to Parliament. To
walk in the footsteps of so many renowned figures and feel the weight of
history all around us was a truly memorable day for us all. From being
'frisked and sniffed' on entry through to watching Mr Bercow arrive for
Prime Minister's questions it was an experience and opportunity not to be missed.” It
was indeed a memorable day though the London traffic was horrendous and the
Science Museum packed.
The Marston’s Brewery tour was a pleasant and interesting evening.
The BVT guide was informative and very friendly and the tasting
session in the bar afterwards proved an enjoyable social event.
