There will be an Open House at The Hanover Center for Trades and Technology on Wednesday, January 7 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. The purpose of this event is to allow 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students to tour the facility and meet THCTT staff members and learn more about courses and academic programming. 5. A student-athlete & college recruiting seminar will take place on Monday, January 12. Information is posted on the AHS athletic website at 7:30 p.m. and the event will take place in the Atlee High School auditorium. Basketball Game Halftime Contest: We will have a contest during halftime of all of the remaining boys and girls basketball games. The contest will consist of 9 shots from different areas on the court and each contestant will have one opportunity to take one shot from each of the 9 areas on the floor. Each area will be worth a set number of points. You will have a 2 minute time limit. The person with the most points will win that night and advance to the next round. Students are asked to sign up during lunch beginning Monday, January 5 through Thursday, January 8. The contest will begin on Friday, January. Both contestants and their rebounder will be admitted into the game free of charge for that evening. Any student who is not able to participate on the night they have been assigned will forfeit to their opponent. Contestants will be announced during the morning announcements. We are excited to continue a workshop series called Connecting Families - Helping Parents Connect with their Children’s Digital Lives. The goal of this workshop series is to support families in raising kids who think critically, participate responsibly, and behave ethically in their online lives. The program materials were developed by Common Sense Education and are endorsed by the National PTA. A total of six additional workshops will be offered from November through May. Please note that all of the workshops are not dependent on one another; if you cannot make it to all of them you will still be able to participate fully in the workshops you are able to attend. This year's hypothetical is titled "A Graduation Ruckus in Rocktown.” The deadline date for submissions is February 12, 2015. 12. The UVA Summer Enrichment Program information serves students who are currently in 9th and 10th grade. It is a residential summer camp offered in 3 consecutive blocks: Session 1: June 21-July 2 Session 2: July 5-July 16 Session 3: July 19-July 30 While students attend only one session, UVA offers a quality learning experiences designed to cultivate interest and potential in a wide variety of fields and disciplines. Students thrive on the fast-paced environment of the classes and the stimulating fun offered by the residential counselors. Qualifying students should be identified as gifted or show high potential in academic fields or intellectual, creative, artistic and/or leadership capacities. The summer courses are taught by specialists in fields ranging from engineering and economics to linguistics and philosophy. During each twelve day session, students stay in dorms, in suites of 8 campers to one counselor on the campus of the University of Virginia. Password for databases and other subscription services are located on Blackboard under “The Atlee High School Library.” First Semester Exam Information Mid-term exams are valued as one-seventh of the semester grade. At least one exam review session will take place for each class. A maximum of two class sessions of review will take place before midterm exams. Teacher-led review is required. Exams will be scheduled for approximately one hour and 40 minutes. Students must remain in classrooms until the end of the examination period. If a student misses an exam due to an emergency, the parent must call the attendance office (804-7232121) and inform the attendance office of the reason. A written note from the parent is required for make-up examinations. Exam excuse notes are turned in to the attendance office where permission to make-up the examination will be determined by Dr. Wheeler. To receive credit for a course, a student must take the exam. This are county policies. Senior Exam Exemptions A senior (a student who is a candidate for June 2015 graduation) may be eligible for exam exemption under the following conditions: 1. The student has no grade lower than a “B” on each nine week’s grading period in a given subject during a current semester. 2. The student must not have been absent in excess of four (4) days during the current semester in a block class, seven (7) in a yearlong class. The student must be in the class for at least half of the block to be present for exemption purposes. 3. The student has only excused absences from school or class. 4. The student does not have two or more discipline referrals to the office for misconduct. 5. The student has not received ISS or OSS 6. The teacher must agree to exempt the student. Exemptions are not automatic. A teacher can require a student to take an exam. 7. Seniors eligible for exemption may, if they choose, take any of their examinations. School Counseling Corner Counselors met with students December 4 to hand out Program of Studies for the 2015-2016 school year. If your child was absent from these meetings, please have them come to the guidance office to pick up a packet. Counselors will begin meeting with their caseloads in January to register them for classes next year. Seniors are reminded that they need to meet with their counselor at least 2 weeks in advance of college application deadlines. Counselors will make appointments with their respective caseloads from January 5 until February 12 to register students for the next school year. Course verification sheets will be sent home with interim reports on February 26 for parents/guardians to sign and return to the guidance office by Friday, March 6. As students begin registering for classes for the 2015-2016 school year, please make sure to explore course offerings at the Hanover Specialty Center. The Specialty Center offers course work in public safety and healthcare, computer science and technology, and engineering. Transportation to and from Hanover High School is provided. Auburn University Students planning to apply for scholarships should complete their admission application with all application materials received by Thursday, January 15. The scholarship application within the AUSOM system opens in mid-October and students accepted for admission must apply through AUSOM by Sunday, February 15 to receive consideration for freshman and general scholarships.
