san Diego Bowl game association Hall of Fame
In 2013, the San Diego Bowl Game Association Hall of Fame inducted
Reggie Campbell as the first inductee from the San Diego County Credit Union
Poinsettia Bowl.
Launching the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl onto the bowl season map in its
inaugural year, Navy running back Reggie Campbell put his name in the record books as he led
the Midshipmen to a 51-30 victory over the Colorado State Rams.
After his team trailed at the end of the first quarter, Campbell took over the game as he tallied
116 yards rushing, 89 yards receiving, and an NCAA-record tying five touchdowns (3 rushing, 2
receiving). Campbell’s record-setting night earned him the game’s Offensive Most Valuable
Player award, as well as a permanent place in San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl
lore.

Poinsettia Bowl game summary
The TCU Horned Frogs used a balanced offensive attack and stifling defense to defeat the
Northern Illinois Huskies 37-7 in the second annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The Northern Illinois offense couldn’t get on track as the NCAA’s leading rusher,
Garrett Wolfe, was held to 28 yards rushing. The TCU defense limited the Huskies to 20
yards rushing and 60 yards of total offense for the game, holding the Huskies scoreless for the
first three quarters. Horned Frogs’ defensive end Tommy Blake finished with two sacks on
the night and took home the Defensive MVP trophy.
The University of Utah held off a late rally by Navy to win the third annual San Diego County
Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, 35-32 in front of a record 39,129 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.
On the other side of the ball, TCU’s offense had no problem finding their groove, tallying 456
total yards and 23 first downs. TCU quarterback Jeff Ballard was named the game’s Offensive
MVP for his outstanding performance, throwing for 258 yards on 19-29 passing. Ballard also
rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another. Running back Lonta Hobbs had a breakout game, rushing for 114 yards and a TD on 18 carries.
The Utes led 35-25 with one minute to play, but a 58-yard touchdown pass to Zerbin Singleton and a perfectly executed onside kick gave the Midshipmen late life before Joe Dale intercepted Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada’s pass to preserve the Utah victory.
Utah quarterback Brian Johnson earned Offensive MVP honors as he threw for 226 yards
and a touchdown and rushed for another as Utah won its seventh straight bowl game. Running back Darrell Mack, a San Diego native, rushed for 76 yards and two touchdowns, including what proved to be the winning score.

Poinsettia Bowl game summary
Stephen Hodge intercepted Boise State’s Kellen Moore with under two minutes to play as
the TCU Horned Frogs hung on to win the fourth annual San Diego County Credit Union
Poinsettia Bowl, 17-16, in a match-up of the #9 (Boise State) and #11-ranked (TCU) teams
in the country. TCU rushed for 278 yards, while their top-ranked defense held Boise State to
only 29 yards on the ground. Quarterback Andy Dalton of TCU finished the game with 276
all-purpose yards and earned Offensive MVP honors.
After spotting California’s Golden Bears two early touchdowns, the #23-ranked Utah Utes
scored 27 unanswered points and defeated Cal, 37-27, in the fifth annual San Diego County
Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. It was Utah’s ninth straight bowl win, the longest active streak
in college football.
After Boise State jumped out to a 13-0 second quarter lead, the Horned Frogs chipped away
and took their first lead of the game, 17-13, early in the fourth quarter after a 10-play, 80-yard
drive was capped off by Joseph Turner’s 17-yard TD run.
Boise State closed the gap to 17-16 on a Kyle Brotzman field goal, and forced a TCU punt. The
Broncos took over on their own 17-yard line with less than two minutes to play, but Hodge intercepted Moore’s pass on the first play to nail down the TCU victory.
Utah was led by freshman quarterback Jordan Wynn, a graduate of nearby Oceanside High
School, who completed 26 of 36 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns to earn the
game’s Offensive MVP award.
Cal scored on back-to-back plays in the first quarter with a long run and an interception return, but Utah came roaring right back. The Utes defense sacked Cal quarterback Kevin Riley
five times, intercepted him twice and forced a fumble.

Poinsettia Bowl game summary
Running back Ronnie Hillman rushed for 228 yards and three TDs, and caught another TD
pass in the San Diego State Aztecs' 35-14 victory over the Navy Midshipmen in the 6th annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Hillman's performance earned him
Offensive MVP honors.
Behind the play of sophomore QB Casey Pachall, the 18th ranked TCU Horned Frogs edged
the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs 31-24 in the seventh annual San Diego County Credit Union
Poinsettia Bowl. The final score marked the fourth time in five years that the game had been
decided by ten points or less.
Hillman's 228 rushing yards broke the Poinsettia Bowl's single-game rushing yardage record.
He also tied Navy's Reggie Campbell (2005) and TCU's Jeff Ballard (2006) for most rushing
touchdowns in the bowl game's six-year history with three.
Playing their final season in the Mountain West, the Horned Frogs (11-2) found themselves
trailing the Bulldogs (8-5) three different times in the game, including a 24-17 deficit halfway
through the fourth quarter. But as he did most of the regular season, Pachall picked up his
team and led them on game-tying and game-winning drives late in the fourth quarter. The
sophomore QB completed 15 of 29 passes for 206 yards and threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Skye Dawson, the game's Offensive MVP, with 4:26 left to play.
The bowl victory was the first for the San Diego State program since the 1969 Pasadena Bowl.
The teams played at Qualcomm Stadium, where less than 24 hours earlier the field was flooded
over by 1.5 million gallons of water. City and stadium officials spent all night pumping and
draining the stadium, and were even able to get the paint down for the logo at midfield before
kickoff. The crowd of 48,049 was a record high for the game.
The Aztecs jumped out to an early 14-0 lead as they scored touchdowns both on the ground
and in the air. Hillman opened the game's scoring when he scampered for a 22-yard touchdown on the Aztecs' second possession of the game.

In the second half, the TCU offense flexed their muscle, engineering an 18-play, 72-yard
game-tying touchdown drive that took up over nine minutes of the fourth quarter. The defense then stepped up as they forced a quick three-and-out from Louisiana Tech to get the
ball back with 6:24 remaining in the game. Starting from their own 39-yard line, the Horned
Frogs once again pushed the Bulldogs' tired defensive line on their heels, setting up the 42yard touchdown pass from Pachall to Dawson to put them up for good.

Poinsettia Bowl game summary
The BYU Cougars took advantage of two defensive touchdowns and 20 fourth-quarter points
to defeat the San Diego State Aztecs 23-6 in the eighth San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. In one of the most impressive defensive performances in bowl history, BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy was everywhere as he recorded 8 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, a
forced fumble and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, a 17-yard interception and return for a
touchdown, and a blocked punt.
The Aztecs had 6-0 lead when the Cougars gained possession with just under six minutes left in
the half. Quarterback Riley Nelson was intercepted by Aztecs' Eric Pinkins, who took it all the
way to the endzone before an illegal block negated the play. BYU kicked a field goal as time expired, cutting SDSU’s lead to 6-3.
SDSU led 6-3 in the fourth and BYU looked poised to score before Lark threw the team's third
interception. That's when Van Noy took over. On the next play, he knocked the ball out of
SDSU quarterback Adam Dingwell's hands, recovered it in the endzone and gave the Cougars
their first lead, 10-6.
After the ensuing kickoff, the wheels began to fall off for the Aztecs. A fumble gave the ball back
to BYU and Jamaal Williams took it up the middle for a touchdown. The extra point missed
wide, leaving SDSU down 10 with over 12 minutes to play.
After trading punts, the Aztecs took over with 6:29 remaining, needing a drive and a score to
stay alive. Again, Van Noy intercepted Dingwell and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown,
stretching the lead to 23-6.
Relying on a stingy defense all night, the Utah State Aggies defeated No. 23 Northern Illinois Huskies 21-14 in the 9th annual San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl.
The Aggies defense frustrated Heisman Trophy finalist Jordan Lynch all night. Utah State's
defense recorded a forced fumble, interception, two sacks, two missed field goals, and a
turnover on downs. San Diego native Joey DeMartino, rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown for the Aggies.
The Aggies opened the scoring on a 31-yard field goal by Nick Diaz. The Huskies looked
ready to respond as they marched 55 yards down the field, but the Utah State defense
forced a missed field goal. One possession later Diaz added a 39-yard field goal for a 6-0
lead. NIU got on the board after a 15-play, 78-yard drive that resulted in a 1-yd touchdown
run by Lynch to give the Huskies the lead.
Opening the second half, Utah State intercepted a Lynch pass and seven plays later the Aggies had a 5-yard touchdown pass and the lead, 13-7. The Huskies had an opportunity after
an interception at the Utah State 14-yard line. But the Aggies defense shut down Lynch
and company on three straight downs, and NIU missed a 29-yard field goal.
From there Utah State strung together a 17-play, 80-yard scoring drive. The Aggies converted the two-point try to extend the lead to 21-7 with just over four minutes to play. NIU
gave the Aggies a scare at the end, cutting the lead in half with 1:44 to play. But the Utah
State special teams unit recovered the onside kick to seal the victory.
