Tech Talk….Internet Safety
All A-Twitter!
Twitter is gaining popularity with tweens and teens as the preferred social network. Why? Mom and dad are less
likely to be on Twitter and more likely to be on Facebook! It’s not uncommon to run into adults who don’t use
Twitter, commonly citing, “I don’t understand it” as their reason for not using it. If your child does use Twitter,
there is some good news – Twitter has rolled out some great updates, one of which is a super easy way to block
a user and report offensive or harassing Tweets. If this update isn’t available to you yet, it will be very soon!
The link below takes you to an overview of how to block a user and report a Tweet; there is also a short demo
video. You don’t have to be a Twitter user to make sure your kids know how to use Twitter safely 

Helping Your Family Achieve Their Health Goals
With a little bit of planning, you can really set your family up for success. By working with your kids to discuss and understand their
goals, they will learn about actions that will help them succeed.
Your child will also learn easy ways to avoid actions that will derail their goals. Involve the kids and have them help create an
environment for success.
Set Your Family up for Success to Reach New Healthy Goals
Here are some suggestions to help your child reach their health goal.

Have each family member share ideas on ways that you can be successful

Make a list of ways to keep the family motivated

Make a list of the obstacles that make it difficult to be successful

Start each morning with a positive encouraging statement

Agree to remove obstacles, distractions and temptations

Plan to have healthy foods or fitness activities available

BE PREPARED. Helpful response ideas to verbal insults part 1
How do you treat people like a friend when they are mean to you? The single most important
thing is to refuse to get angry or upset. Keep your reaction calm and show that you are
resilient by using an assertive response. The following are some winning responses to handle
verbal insults that your child can use:
Thank you for noticing.
It’s so nice of you to care about me.
Others have told me that before.
Do you think there is anything I can do about it?
That’s been bothering me for a long time too.
Please, tell me more.
Is there something I did to make you mad?
Not everyone has the courage to talk to me that honestly.
I have big ears? Thanks, I thought they were looking a little mousey today!
*Whenever you are having a problem with someone, remember the golden rule and to treat
others like a friend even if they are being mean to you. You do not have to become friends
with your enemy, but you still need to be nice to them. By doing so, you will always be a
winner.
**Remember to respond in a way without sarcasm or saying something mean back to the
other person.
Next week: Possible responses to specific situations continued.
