Who should attend the course?
Where is the course taught and by whom?
This course is suitable for physiotherapists, sports therapists,
sport rehabilitators, osteopaths and other health, sport and
exercise rehabilitation professionals who are interested in
strength and conditioning.
You need to have a BSc degree or equivalent qualification. The
course may be taken as part of a postgraduate award or as a
stand-alone CPD course, with or without academic credit.
Develop in-depth theoretical and practical understanding of
strength and conditioning in order to optimise performance, and
plan, implement, deliver and evaluate strength and conditioning
programmes.
The course takes place at the University’s College Lane campus
and the Hertfordshire Sports Village in Hatfield. It is coordinated by
Edward Baker and Fiona Scott. Edward Baker is an experienced
Strength & Conditioning Coach with both Performance
Hertfordshire and the English Institute of Sport. He has additional
experience in lecturing as well as successfully participating at a
competitive level in weightlifting and power lifting.
Fiona Scott is the Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach at
Performance Hertfordshire, University of Hertfordshire, and
primarily works with Arsenal Ladies, Hertfordshire Golf, National
Tennis Players, TASS Athletes and University Scholars. Fiona also
competes in lacrosse at Club, Regional and previously National
level.
Course content
Computer equipment requirement
The course helps you develop and advance your knowledge and
skills in applying the concepts of strength and conditioning for
athletes and the active population. It covers the principles of
strength and conditioning in order to optimise exercise,
occupation-specific and sports-specific human physical
performance.
Delivery of the course incorporates blended learning which aims to
combine e-learning activities with campus based learning. You
need to have access to a suitable personal computer and a good
reliable Internet connection (broadband recommended). Most
modern PCs or Macs (less than 3 years old) should be suitable. If
you have any queries or need any additional support with IT skills,
the School employs an e-learning technologist who will be pleased
to help and advise you.
Course aims
You learn how to use the following tools as part of a structured,
safe and effective strength and conditioning programme:
strength training, weight-training, power-lifting, plyometric
training, speed and agility training, core stability training,
flexibility training and cardiovascular fitness training. You also
learn programme design and periodisation.
The course includes prehabilitation as a tool to aid recovery from
injury and as a preventative tool. You learn the role of
biomechanics in the aetiology of sports injury and rehabilitation
and the use of video and electromyography to record and
analyse human movement in a sports and exercise environment.

£1150 self-funding fee
Contract funding for NHS staff
The University is contracted by the NHS to provide post-registration
education/CPD and training for its health professionals. If you are
an NHS employee contact the senior manager responsible for postregistration education/CPD in your Trust to check if the course you
wish to attend can be supported by the Trust's contract with our
University.

Assessment
The assessment involves a case study and a practical
examination. The case study will be submitted on 5 January
