These talented musicians truly are “allStars” as they have individually played
in some of the top bands, with performances ranging from New Orleans,
to Hollywood, to Hawaii, to Portland.
The interactions between the All-Stars
and the audience is fun and one can
sense the rhythmic connection. They
will play at the Seaside Jazz Festival in
Seaside, Feb. 20-22.
Gary Smith: Drums/Vocals. Gary
has performed at the L.A. Press Club,
Hollywood Palladium, Coconut
Grove, and the Queen Mary. He made
numerous appearances on the Jerry
Lewis Telethon. Gary performs frequently at Tony Starlight’s in Portland,
where he recorded the album Gary
Smith Sings Live at Tony Starlight’s.
Gary is a retired LAPD officer and has
written two books about his police
officer experiences.
Wayne Travillion: Cornet/Vocals/
Musical Director. Played variety of
styles from trad jazz to big band and
symphonic. In Hawaii, has backed top
performers (Della Reese, Andy Wil-
liams, Englebert Humperdink, Jose
Feliciano, amongst others) and led his
own band in Waikiki.
Garry Powell: Trombone/Vocals.
Has been playing in Dixieland bands
since 1964 in Arizona, California and
Hawaii. Some of the groups are: John
Norris NOJB of Hawaii, Bill Cox’s
Over-the-Hill Gang of Honolulu, the
Dixie Natural Gas Company of Maui,
Jazz Salvation and The Apple Knockers Jazz Band of Sonoma County
(CA), the Riverboat Ramblers of Phoenix, AZ. Performed with notables Ed
Garland, John St. Cyr, John Best, Ray
Leatherwood, and Rex Steward.
David Evans: Reeds. Began playing
professionally in early teens. Scholarship to Loyola University brought him
to New Orleans where he played with
legends like Pete Fountain, Johnny
Vidacovich, Luther Kent, Johnny
Mathis, Gladys Knight, The Four Tops
and The Temptations. Dave teaches
saxophone at Lewis and Clark and
Marylhurst Colleges.
John Bennett: Piano. Taught in
public and private schools before
becoming one of Portland’s most
popular pianists. His parallel interest
is in Russian and he has taught at the
high school and college levels. Much
sought-after pianist and one of the top
Rag piano players on West Coast.
David Duthie: Bass. He is a versatile
musician with a driving rhythm who
has been described as a “Powerhouse”
bassist. Currently plays with many
other groups and show bands in a
wide variety of formats, including the
piano and bass duo of Blackburn and
Duthie. Also performs on the cruise
ship Queen of the West.
John Kaleta: Banjo. Hails from diverse musical family, including father
Bob Kaleta, who played piano with
several bands. Was introduced to trad
jazz at an early age, starting on guitar
at age 6. At age 10, “finally” received
his first banjo and began studing with
George Baker for 17 years, until his
death. Known for his superb right
hand technique, smooth tremolo and
syncopated strokes.

The dictionary defines “godfather” as
“...a man who is influential in a move-
ment or organization, through providing support for it or through playing a
leading or innovatory part in it.”
The December monthly session was
a wonderful, festive program thanks
to Portland’s godfather of our kind
of music, Jim Beatty. Along with his
wonderful musicians, Jim kept the
afternoon fun and festive.
There was a nice crowd that kept the
dance floor busy. The Christmas decor
(including candle-lit tables) was an
added flavor for the occasion. And, the
jammers provided two fun, musical
sets.

Bill Brautlacht passed away on Dec.
6th. He and his late wife, Pat, were
stalwarts at PDJS, the Libbies Jam,
many jazz festivals, and they are very
much missed. Bill was a fireboat captain with Portland Fire Bureau and an
avid salmon fisherman.

April Silent Auction
First Time Policy
Please remember our Annual Silent
Auction at the April Session. We take
jazz materials of all kinds: music,
records, CDs, clothing, and any other
item of value. This is a good time to
consider regifting those Christmas gifts
you really won’t use.
When non-member attendees come
to their first PDJS meeting, they will be
charged the $10 Member Admission,
rather than $15. This gives them a
great show at modest cost. This policy
replaces all previous coupons and
discounts.
