ODYSSEY7Q+
The Unparalleled Strengths of the Odyssey7Q+
When Convergent Design conceived of the Odyssey7Q+, the goal was to create the ultimate portable monitor/
recorder. In all areas it was designed to excel, surpassing anything else on the market. While other devices may
share a few traits, none come close to the performance of the Odyssey7Q+. Below are some of the many ways in
which the Odyssey7Q+ is unique.

MONITORING
The Odyssey7Q+ features a 7.7” OLED screen. Use of high quality OLED means true blacks and highly accurate
colors. The color gamut of the OLED exceeds REC709 so far that the Odyssey7Q+ can also be used to display DCI-P3
color space, which is important for the extended color gamut available on cameras such as the C500 and the F55.
The only other monitors available capable of displaying DCI-P3 cost more than $15,000. OLED calibration controls
allow the user to customize the display settings. There is no finer monitor in an on-camera form factor than the
OLED screen in the Odyssey7Q+.
A great monitor only starts with a great image. Detailed Image Analysis Tools and signal routing make the
Odyssey7Q+ a professional imaging tool. Both a Histogram and a Waveform display are available in Luma or RGB
Parade. A False Color exposure mode is programmable and features a guide legend on screen. Adjustable Zebras
are also available to judge exposure level. A Pixel Zoom with finger drag allows the user to closely analyze focus,
noise and other aspects of the image. A three-mode adjustable Focus Assist gives precise readings the user can
tailor to the scene or personal preference. Frame Guides are available in presets as well as programmable in size,
aspect and color, and the user can choose to display up to four custom and one preset frame guides all at once.
LUTs can be applied on the OLED screen as well as to the video outputs. Many of the Image Analysis Tools can also
be sent for external monitoring.
RECORDING
The Odyssey7Q+ is the most versatile recorder in the world, able to capture more recording formats in the greatest
range or resolutions and frame rates. These capabilities continue to expand. Signals input over SDI in single link,
double-link or quad-link for the widest possible range of camera models, and in HDMI for HD-4K video.

Some cameras such as the F55 output signals in video or RAW data over multiple SDI connections. The Odyssey7Q+
can accept 3G-SDI signals in single-link, dual-link or quad-link for the widest possible camera compatibility – more
than any other recorder. The HDMI input can accept HD signals up to 1080p60, UHD30p and 4K24p.
The Odyssey SSDs mount to the Odyssey7Q+ using high speed SATA connections. Some formats and frame rates
contain so much data that they exceed the capabilities of SATA, so the Odyssey 7Q+ has two SSD slots to allow for
high data rate recording. 4K RAW @ 60p and 2K RAW @ 240p are mathematically impossible to record on a device
with only one SATA connection, making the Odyssey7Q+ the most affordable recorder in the world with high data
rate capabilities.
ROUTING
The Odyssey7Q+ can record in a multitude of resolutions from 720p to 4K and in video or RAW data. No matter
what type of signal comes in, the Odyssey7Q+ will output a standard HD video signal over both SDI and HDMI to
connect to standard video equipment. Both HDMI and SDI outputs are always active. LUTs can be applied on the
Odyssey7Q+ OLED screen as well as to the video outputs. Many of the Image Analysis Tools can be chosen for
viewing on the video outputs.

MEDIA
The Odyssey7Q+ uses the 2.5” Odyssey SSDs, the fastest and most reliable affordable media available. Odyssey
SSDs cost only $1.36-$1.55 per GB (US list) and are available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB sizes. They maintain
performance from empty to full and over thousands of record cycles. Even if the battery dies during a shot, the
Odyssey SSDs have built-in Power-Loss Protection to prevent file corruption. Every Odyssey SSD is tested, certified,
and warrantied for three years by Convergent Design to perform flawlessly with the Odyssey7Q+. The Odyssey
SSDs do not drop frames and do not corrupt files. They are statistically the most reliable media in the industry, and
are a fraction of the price of proprietary media for various camera and RAW recorder systems.

MULTI-STREAM
The Odyssey7Q+ features a unique functionality as a Multi-Stream monitor/switcher. Up to four HD video signals
can be viewed in a single quad-split HD image or switched between live in full screen. The quad-split and switched
signals are viewable on the OLED panel as well as sent to the SDI and HDMI outputs. Inputs can be up to 720p60,
1080i60 or 1080p30 and can be intermixed. Inputs can be from SDI (four available) or HDMI (one available). Two
SDI and one HDMI outputs are all active.
The Image Analysis tools are available in Multi-Stream, making the Odyssey7Q+ an ideal tool for camera comparison
and matching.
EXPANDABILITY
The Odyssey7Q+ employs a large main processor with a great deal of available internal memory, allowing room for
additional future capabilities. This processor is larger than those in any other monitor/recorder. The Odyssey SSDs
have additional record speed capacity yet to be utilized. And the Odyssey7Q+ is built on the same programming
architecture as the other models in the Odyssey Family of monitor/recorders, the Odyssey7 and the Odyssey7Q.
This allows Convergent Design to continue to expand upon the capabilities of the Odyssey7Q+ as all work will
benefit our client base. In 2014, the Odyssey monitor/recorders enjoyed six firmware updates.

CONNECTIVITY
Up to four SDI and one HDMI inputs. This allows Dual-Link connectivity by such cameras as the C500, ALEXA, F35,
F55, Phantom Flex4K as well as Quad-Link connectivity from cameras such as the IO Industries Flare 4KSDI. Some
cameras (such as F55) cannot output 4K with less than two SDI connections. Some cameras (such as C500) cannot
output RAW above 30fps with less than two SDI connections.
Two SDI and one HDMI outputs allow for multiple simultaneous monitoring paths.
LTC Timecode In/Out. The Odyssey7Q+ has a dedicated BNC connection for timecode connectivity, and it can
accept embedded timecode over SDI and HDMI. The internal timecode generator can output to other devices,
functioning as a Master Clock.
POWER
The Odyssey7Q+ can accept the widest range of power of any monitor/recorder, 6.5-34vdc. This allows it to be
powered by a variety of small camcorder batteries, larger camera brick batteries, or camera accessory power
outputs.
Mounting plates are available for seven different types of batteries. Three different power cables are available, as
well as a “flying lead” bare wire cable to make your own.
The power input uses a locking connector and is both reverse-polarity and overvoltage protected.
Highly efficient power management in the Odyssey7Q+ means that it consumes dramatically less power than other
monitor/recorders. The Odyssey SSDs consume less than half the power of other 2.5” SSDs. Even in standby mode
the Odyssey7Q+ consumes less power than other systems. This extends battery life and also generates less heat
in the unit.
CONSTRUCTION
The Odyssey7Q+ is housed in a cast magnesium casing. Magnesium is extremely strong with little weight. It is
also a natural dissipater of heat and blocks RF interference. Multiple threaded mounting sockets use steel helicoils
inserted into the magnesium casing for superior strength and protection for the internal components from long
mounting bolts. The Odyssey7Q+ and its magnesium case pass a professional-standard six foot drop test.
There are no vents or fans on the Odyssey7Q+, and the casing never gets more than slightly warm to the touch. No
moving parts increases life expectancy, eliminates noise and protects from the elements. Small ridges on the back
of the Odyssey7Q+ casing raise battery plates and other mounted devices clear of the surface of the case so that
heat can naturally dissipate. Dust and moisture cannot get into the Odyssey7Q+, and no sound comes out of it.

The Odyssey SSDs lock into place using a simple but effective latch system designed by Convergent Design. This
locking tab removes stress from the electrical contacts of the SSD. This holds the SSDs in place for car rigs, aerial
photography, inverted and handheld rigs, and any other usage that might encounter excessive vibration, G-forces
and violent movement.
The power input is also a locking connector and all of our battery mounts have locking tabs on them to prevent
slippage that could result in loss of power and to take stress off of the electrical contacts.
Small raised edge bars on the magnesium casing help protect the Odyssey7Q+ OLED screen. The OLED panel is
bonded to a sheet of hardened Gorilla Glass, and a peel-off / stick-on screen protector comes already installed on
the Odyssey7Q+.
Three small mechanical buttons are recessed slightly in the Odyssey7Q+ magnesium casing, but can still be
operated by a person’s fingertip and cannot get stuck on the casing.
RELIABILITY AND SUPPORT
