MEDIA RELEASE softly pouting while walking into breezes AN AWARD-WINNING NEW PLAY BY JAKE STEWART DIRECTED BY JESSICA MCLAUGHLIN CAFFERTY Happy is a song that you sing along to. And sometimes you forget the words. And sometimes you go deaf. Ben and Toby were the perfect couple. Like, tambourine-heavy underscores and happy nodding facial expressions perfect. But then Toby dumped Ben. Now days come along that Ben knows his understudy would handle a lot better. But that’s, like, not a thing. Jake Stewart’s bitingly sarcastic comedy follows Ben, a young twenty-something, as he struggles to thrive after being dumped by what was probably the love of his life. But this play isn’t about heartbreak, or about being gay, or about falling a little bit in love with your straight pal’s new beau – ultimately it’s about the agony of human intimacy. Stewart is one of a new generation of playwrights that challenges conventional uses of language and structure. His vernacular and witty scripts ring with the frustrated truth of human experience. As well as being a playwright, actor, and theatre maker, Stewart is artistic director of theatre company Kissing Booth. “Plays about young love are a complete waste of time.” – Jake Stewart Following their sell-out season at Monash Uni Student Theatre (MUST), an ensemble of eight talented performers will play Ben as he navigates embarrassing intimate encounters, fragile friendships, and relationship breakdowns. Director Jessica McLaughlin Cafferty, who is also assistant director of Psychopomp & Seething at La Mama in February, is thrilled to be taking this challenging new work beyond the student stage. “Nothing’s more human to me than eight people playing the same boy,” she said of the play. “Ben is a lost boy, but unfortunately for him, he’s not blindly following Peter Pan.” Written by Jake Stewart Directed & co-designed by Jessica McLaughlin Cafferty Assistant Director & Musical Director: Lindsay Templeton Performed by Alasdair Huggett, Alistair Trapnell, Ariadne Sgouros, Chris Edwards, Imogen Walsh, Samuel Nix, Tennessee Mynott-Rudland & Thomas Little Producer: Tess Chappell Production Assistant: Enise Tatlidil Stage Management: Cara Schelleman & Chris Chosich JANUARY 14 - FEBRUARY 1 Wed 6.30pm | Thu, Fri, Sat 7.30pm | Sun 4pm La Mama Theatre, 205 Faraday Street, Carlton Full $25 | Concession $15 Tickets available via: www.lamama.com.au | 03 9347 6142 Part of the 2014 MIDSUMMA Festival Costume Design: Cara Schelleman Co-Set Design: Nathan Burmeister Co-Lighting Design: Adrian Black PR & Marketing Manager: Tennessee Mynott-Rudland Dramaturg & Graphic Design: Daniel Lammim Promotional Photography: Jessica Labiris Choreographer: Kate Brennan La Mama Theatre, 205 Faraday Street Carlton VIC 3053 Australia [email protected] | +613 9347 6948 | www.lamama.com.au
