Welcome!
On behalf of Launceston College I warmly invite musicians to participate in the 2015 Launceston College Performing Arts Music
Summer School. Our last four Summer Schools have been an outstanding success due to the enthusiasm of our
participating students, the expertise and commitment of our expert music staff and the extraordinary support from
Launceston College. I would like to acknowledge the educational support and sponsorship we have received this year
from The Tasmanian Bands League and Encore Theatre Company. We look forward to seeing you at the Summer
School. Peter Quigley: Head of Performing Arts Music, Esk Band Program, LC Performing Arts Music Summer Schools
Concert Band Programs 12-16 January (Monday to Friday)
The Concert Band Program aims to give woodwind, brass and percussion musicians from primary school level to advanced community
level the opportunity to develop their instrumental skills, musicality and sight reading in graded concert bands. All participants will be
expected to have their own instruments (percussion gear is provided) and have a basic level of competence on their instruments. The
program is not designed for total beginners. Students will be assigned to an ensemble which reflects their skill level and one
in which they feel comfortable. While emphasis will be on developing instrumental and musical skills, we also want
participants to have fun, make new friends and have a rewarding performance experience.
Conductor in Residence: Major Peter Grant (retired) Musical Director of the Australian Army Band Melbourne.
Other instrumental staff include: Matthew Dudfield, Peter Quigley and additional staff to be announced.
Voice for the Stage 12-16 January
(Tuesday to Friday)
The four day program will cover many aspects including; Preparing for auditions, Essential vocal techniques, Sing in harmony,
Microphone techniques, Stage deportment and much more. Great preparation of the College’s 2015 Production!
Vocalist in Residence: Brett Budgeon is an Australian vocalist best known for his leading roles in musical theatre and
cabaret performances. Brett has performed alongside Jimmy Barnes, Diesel, Deni Hines, Kasey Chambers in the inaugural
Breath of Life Music Festival. He has also performed with well-known Australian artists Darryl Braithwaite, Brian Cadd, Ross
Wilson and Jessica Mayboy. He is one of Tasmania's few professional contemporary music acts and has performed in
numerous musicals such as Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar and Footloose.
Brass Band Days (Junior & Senior) 17-18 January (Saturday & Sunday)
These exciting days will challenge Tasmanian brass band musicians to work in an ensemble situation. The Junior group will
be with Major Peter Grant. The Senior group will be under the direction of Jason Katsikaris who is regarded as one of
the leading brass band conductors of his generation. He established his reputation in Australia by taking the Gunnedah Shire
Band from D Grade to become National Champions, Australasian Open Champions, Australasian Open Entertainment
Champions and Ern Keller Band of the Year. He is in constant demand as a conductor in Australasia and the UK.
