Medical Devices Team
We consider ourselves well placed to assist our clients in maximising their intellectual property protection across all aspects
of medical devices, and to provide advice on the rights of others in this field. Areas in which we have particular experience
include stents; materials such as dental, ophthalmic and orthopaedic materials; ophthalmic devices including retinal implants
and ophthalmic lenses; nebulisers and drug delivery systems; wound healing systems; tissue culture systems and tissue scaffold
materials; implantable sensors and other diagnostic instruments; surgical instruments; catheters and syringes.
Our Medical Devices Team is made up of patent attorneys and technical specialists from a variety of technical backgrounds (e.g.
engineers, chemists, materials scientists and biochemists), which enables us to bring a wide range of experience to assist our clients
in the medical devices field. We have considerable experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in this field. We
handle a substantial number of opposition and appeal proceedings at the European Patent Office (both defending and opposing
granted patents) and have considerable experience in due diligence work, infringement opinions, portfolio management and
advising our clients on their patent strategy.

Patrick has a degree in chemistry from the University of Cambridge. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 1984
and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1989. His experience in the medical device field
includes medicine dispensers, containers and syringes, coating for implanted devices and inhalers.
Clients include large US and Japanese companies.
Nigel Hackney Partner, Patent & Trade Mark Attorney

Nigel has a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Leeds. He joined
Mewburn Ellis in 1991 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1994. He has a wide-ranging
patent practice, with experience in the fields of nebulisers and drug-delivery equipment. Also does
significant amounts of trade mark and designs work. Clients include multinational companies and
SMEs.
Simon Kremer Partner, Patent Attorney

Simon has a degree and PhD in biochemistry from the University of Bristol. He joined Mewburn Ellis
in 1997 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1996 whilst working for another IP firm.
He has extensive experience in handling a range of patent applications for medical devices and
related apparatus, including dental materials, wound-healing, tissue culture systems, and medical
apparatus designed for administration of therapeutics or measurement of bio-parameters. Clients
include individual inventors, universities, SMEs, technology transfer organisations, research councils
and multinational companies.
Robert Watson

Robert has a degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford. He joined Mewburn Ellis in
1995 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 1999. He has worked on numerous patent
applications relating to intraocular lenses. President of FICPI-UK since 2011 and Rapporteur of
FICPI’s international design study group (CET) - represents FICPI on designs at WIPO meetings.
Member of Designs and Copyright Committee of CIPA. Foreign member of AIPLA.

Matthew has a degree and PhD in materials science from the University of Oxford. He joined
Mewburn Ellis in 1999 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2004. He has experience
in tissue scaffold materials, joint repair and drug delivery systems, in particular for ophthalmic
treatment. Clients include universities, SMEs and multinationals including many JP clients. He
has been awarded a Patent Agent Litigator Certificate in 2010 allowing him to conduct intellectual
property litigation in all relevant courts including the Patents Court (High Court), Patents County
Court and on appeal from these courts.
Stephen Carter Partner, Patent Attorney

Stephen has a degree and MPhil in mechanical engineering from the University of Bath, including
courses in biomechanics. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 1994 and qualified as a European Patent
Attorney in 1998. He has experience across the hi-tech sector, with particular experience in
medical devices and related electronics and software, including implantable sensors / simulators,
retinal implants, stents, surgical clamps and other surgical instruments, glucose sensors and video
laryngoscopes. He worked for a large law firm from 2000-2004 gaining experience in IP litigation
and due diligence work for corporate transactions and IPOs.

Mewburn Ellis in 1996 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2004. He has particular
experience of patent work in relation to medical imaging technologies. Clients include universities,

Rachel Oxley Partner, Patent Attorney

Rachel has a degree in chemistry and a PhD in polymer chemistry from the University of Durham.
She joined Mewburn Ellis in 1998 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2002. She has
considerable experience dealing with patenting medical device technology; the NHS is a client. Her
experience includes stents, catheters and medical pumps. Clients include British universities and
domestic and overseas corporations.

Jeremy has a degree and PhD in chemistry from the University of Nottingham. He joined Mewburn
Ellis in 2001 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2005. He has extensive experience
across the field of medical devices, and in particular in relation to diagnostic instruments. Clients
include SMEs, universities and domestic and overseas multinational companies, in particular
Japanese companies.

Richard has a degree in physics from the University of Oxford. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2001 and
qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2005. A large proportion of Richard’s caseload relates
to the drafting and prosecution of applications in the medical device field. Richard acts for Creo
Medical Limited, who specialise in the application of highly-controlled microwave and millimetre
wave techniques in the fields of oncology and tissue sterilisation. Member of the International Liaison
Committee of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and the American Intellectual Property
Law Association (AIPLA).

Simon has a degree in ship science from Southampton University, including specialisations in fluid
dynamics and materials engineering. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2008 and qualified as a European
Patent Attorney in 2000 whilst working for another IP firm. He has extensive experience of patent
work in relation to medical devices, including work with infusion systems including pumps and
needleless connectors in particular, and also work with intravascular stents and equipment for their
insertion. Clients include large corporations and SMEs.

and ophthalmic lenses. Has considerable experience in EPO oppositions and appeals. Clients
include universities, multinational companies and SMEs. He is a regular visitor to Japan.

Robert has a degree in molecular and cellular biochemistry from the University of Oxford and a
PhD in cellular biology from the University of Cambridge. He joined Mewburn Ellis in 2006 and
qualified as a European Patent Attorney in 2011. He has experience in a range of medical device
types including devices for administering therapeutics, orthopaedic implants, bio-incubators and
other culture systems.

Emma has an MSci degree in Physics and a PhD in Nanoscale Physics from the University of
Birmingham She joined Mewburn Ellis in 2009 and qualified as a European Patent Attorney in
2013. Her patent work covers a range of medical devices including retinal implants, stents, catheters,
laryngoscopes and cryogenic storage.
