Woking LTCC Junior Performance Player Guide 2015
At Woking LTCC we are regularly trying to improve the programme to allow all
players to get the most out of their tennis and reach full potential. Research has
shown that there are key training and competition elements which players must put
time and effort into to reach the highest levels in tennis, so here’s what's expected
from all Performance Players in the programme.....
ACADEMY SQUAD SESSIONS
The key foundation of development is training with others of a similar age/level to
learn how to compete against, as well as work with, to improve your game. Sessions
are run by coaches of LTA Level 4 Performance (or equivalent) and above with 3-6
players per coach. The top players in each age group will be grouped where possible
with Head of Performance – Mario Munoz, with other Level 4+ coaches; Matt Trevail,
Jonny Thomson, Jamie Donaghy and Matt Swanston running the other academy
squads.
Players should be taking part in at least two sessions per week to realistically be able
to keep up with others in their age group and the lesson plan for the term will be
Costs: Academy squads are booked into via the club website or booking form. All
charges are termly (£10.50/hr), with players given a 15% discount for 2 squads and
20% discount for doing 3 squads. Discounts are only given when paying for the full
term no later than the second week in.
Academy Squad Structure - Groups are split into Orange/Green/12U/14U/16U/18U
and players are assessed for grouping based on LTA rating/ranking, competition
results over the last 6 months and attitude on court. A good technical base of shots
and footwork, as well as understanding of a range of tactical situations to use in
points is essential. Players may “play-up” an age group if an appropriate level has
been reached.
Junior Academy - For the majority academy groups, players are expected to be
competing at least once a month at grade 5 level or in ratings matches and aspire to
challenge for places in AEGON teams each summer.

attitude, with good sportsmanship at all times.

Orange HPA: O2 – O1*
Green HPA: O1* - G2
12U HPA: G1 – 7.2

Reports: All academy players will receive an end of term report card detailing areas
of improvement and areas which need concentrating on.
Rainy Days: Please never assume a squad is cancelled with bad weather. Many
sessions will be moved inside to the Fitness Studio for S&C or the Meeting Room for
Mental Conditioning (parents should get a text if we ever have to cancel).
Academy Scholarship - Players who have been selected for “Regional” LTA camps in
the past 6 months and/or winning at Grade 3 and above may apply for a Scholarship
Package; Inc. “HEAD” sponsorship (rackets/clothing) and their “third-squad” free of
charge. Players must also be taking individual lessons at the club and represent
Woking LTCC in AEGON matches and tournaments (please email

below rates and buy floodlight tokens at the bar when required.

OTHER IMPORTANT ASPECTS
Strength and Conditioning – As junior players get older, physical attributes have
more of an effect on performance, so players need to get into a regular
exercise/stretching routine aid physical development and reduce the risk of injury.
Ask your coach for guidance or contact Tom Hall (fitness trainer) for individualised
plans (see contact lists). A basic tennis S&C guide is also available from the office and
coaches can go through exercises in an individual lesson.
PRACTISE!! - All too often forgotten is simply coming to the club to practise with
friends and family. Rally, play points, play a match, it all helps improve your game!!
Video/Digital Analysis Sessions - Hawk Eye Analysis expect Ollie Clough will be
introducing a new package for players to analyse their game using the latest digital
software and racket analysis devices (from Feb 15').
Mental Conditioning - Sports Psychology expert Ashley Mount is available for
individual sessions for those wanting to enhance their mental game.
Parents Evening/Meetings - Once a term parents will have the chance to discuss the
tennis programme with the coaches and get advice on schedules, goals, expectations

COMPETITION
Tournaments/Matchplay - Doing all the lessons can be fun, but never as rewarding
as playing well in a match and to do this, players need to be REGULARLY COMPETING
all year round. Please ask the coach what grade of competition you should be
entering, as tournament entries are all done through the LTA website. A lists of
Woking tournament is always displayed in the clubhouse and all players are expected
to compete in the main events each year; Club Championships, Whitsun Open and
Woking Open tournaments.
Ratings Box Leagues - Ratings show your level of tennis and get you entry into
tournaments (G4/G5), so everyone in the programme is automatically entered to
play others within the club to help improve ratings. Remember; playing someone
your own rating can only be a benefit, as it will never harm your rating, so get
competing!!
AEGON League Teams - Every Summer Woking has multiple teams from 8U – 18U to
represent the club in this national league. All academy players are expected to do
their best to be available on match dates and “A” teams are selected based on
current rating/ranking. In “B” and “C” teams, we will endeavour to give all players in
the team squad a chance to play.
Player Analysis during Competition - It is often a good idea to “match-chart” when
watching players to see where mistakes are commonly happening. Coaches will
watch players in home tournaments where possible, but please be aware coaches
are expected to charge a 50% rate for their time when coming out to specific
matches. This can be very useful, so please take advantage of their observational
skills!
OVERSEAS TOURS
The club will be organising regular annual trips to overseas training academies (e.g.
Sanchez-Casal, Barcelona Oct 14’) to give players the chance to train at the highest
level, as well as benefit from the great tennis and personal development
opportunities these provide. Keep your eye out for updates, as spaces are usually
limited.
