Sheila Mack, Very Important Person at NCC
Sheila make was born on August
14, 1964 in North Carolina,
where she lived with her grandmother and her aunt. She was
the oldest of two. Sheila moved
to Philadelphia at the age of 18
and she lived with her mom for
several years before moving into
a group home, where she resided for several years. Sheila’s
best childhood memories are of
spending tome with family and
visiting other relatives in the
south. Math was Sheila’s favorite
subject in school. Sheila has
worked for several companies,
such as a candy factory and at an
Estee Lauder factory. Sheila
found out about NCC through
her case manager, Joy. She has
been coming to NCC for about
a year. Sheila stated that she
loves coming to NCC and seeing
all her friends and having fun.
Sheila loves classes at Norcom,
such as music, art, BINGO, and
some cooking classes. Sheila
stated that she likes everything
about NCC and she likes
everyone here. Presently, Sheila
has her own apartment and
lives by herself. She has staff to
support her in the morning,
and her mother lives in the
same apartment building and so
she sees her every day. Sheila
has no pets and does not have
an interest, even though she
said, “I love dogs.” While at
home, Sheila likes to listen to
music, cook her own food, and

PSPCA Volunteering Program
by Melissa Newman, NCC Therapeutic Recreation Intern
Cheryl Cole has recently started volunteering at the PSPCA (Philadelphia
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and wants to share her
experience with you! The PSPCA was organized in June 21st, 1867 and
throughout the years they have dedicated themselves to improving the
lives of Pennsylvania Animals through their core programming that
includes, but is not limited too: humane law enforcement, humane
education classes, adoption centers, and lastly low-cost wellness clinics.
Like any non-profit organization they are heavily reliant on the support
that they receive from their volunteers. Cheryl, as proud lover of animals
(who has three cats Sandy, Tigger, and Baby; plus one Dachshund name
Sparkles at home) decided to lend her support to their organization
starting this past October 25th, 2014. Since starting her volunteer
orientation at the PSPCA, Cheryl has contributed to the daily operations
of the volunteer department in order to help ensure its efficient
performance. As a volunteer Cheryl is responsible for providing shelter
essentials: assembling litter boxes, making cat toys, and giving treats to
the animals. And hopes to soon begin working as a “Feline Friend” that
provides much need socialization to incoming cats at the PSPCA in order
to increase their chances of adoption to a good home.
If you are interested in learning about how you can contribute to the
PSPCA volunteer program contact: Jennifer Johnson (volunteer manger at
the PSPCA) at 267-463-2328 or by email at [email protected].
“I feel like I’m making a difference and I’m having
a lot of fun working here and learning a lot too!”
~Cheryl Cole, PSPCA Volunteer and NCC Member
