an approved extension, will be penalized at a rate of 10% per day of the possible maximum
mark for the assessment item for each day or part day that the item is late. You can submit
your assignment up to 4 days after due date. Late submission subjects to maximum 40%
deduction in overall marks. Assessment items submitted more than four days after the due

previously submitted for another course, or facilitating acts of academic dishonesty by
others. The penalties are severe!
11.6. Plagiarism:

In war torn economies of countries such as Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina,
microfinance has provided much –needed assistance to entrepreneurs and small
business. Microfinance is the lending of small sums to poor people who would
otherwise be shut out of access to capital. In the northeastern Bosnia village of
Zivinice, Edina Bukvic is using microfinance to pursue a childhood dream of making
wedding dresses like the ones she used to see in magazines.
Edina’s capital funding to start her business come from an initial $900 six month
loan at 36 percent interest from a nonprofit group called Mi-Bospo. Mi-Bospo is a
part of women’s world banking a global nonprofit network of lenders and banks that
with women in third world and developing countries. on Mi-Bospos Web site, it
states its purpose as “ economically empowering the women because an
economically empowered women can batter influence social change and contribute
to better quality of life for her family. “Without her much needed loan, Edina
probably would still be working nights in a restaurant that she and her husband own.
But now she does not have to work night or weekends and usually has her shop
open from 10am to 2pm, giving her more time to spend with her two daughters.
Edina says, I love what I’m doing. I have more time for myself and my family now.”
And she is making more money as well, netting almost $10,000 a year. With her
loan, Edina started out making the wedding dresses herself, but now finds it easier
to buy them. Her inventory of 40 dresses gives customers several choices. And
paying a rental fee of only $100 is a lot less expensive for the brides to be as well.

You are a senior member of a national law firm in New York City. The managing partner of
the firm has asked you to head up the southern branch in Raleigh, North Carolina. This
branch is one of ten under the main office. On the whole, the firm has been successful since
its establishment in the mid 1920s, but in the last five years, many of younger staff has
elected to leave the organization. The managing partner is convinced the problem is not
salary, because a recent survey indicated that the firm’s salary structure is competitive with
that of other major firm. However, he requests that you study this matter first hand in your
new assignment.
After getting settled in Raleigh, one of your first projects is to meet with the four senior
managers to determine why the branch has had such a high attrition rate among the
younger staff Harding Smith, age 45, and states that the younger staff lacks dedication and
fails to appreciate the career opportunities provided by the firm. Wilma Thomson, age 50,
says the younger staff members are always complaining about the lack of meaningful
feedback on their performance, and many have mentioned that they would like to have a
sponsor in the organization to assist with their development. Thomson further explains that
the firm does provide performance ratings to staff and the previous manager had always
maintained and open door policy. Brian Scott, age 40, says he has received complaints that
training is not relevant and is generally dull. He explains that various persons in the firm
who worked with training from time to time acted mainly on guidance from New York.
Denies Ruther Ford, age 38, says she believes the root of the problem is the lack of the
human resource department. However, she says that when the idea was mentioned to the
managing partner in New York, it was totally rejected.
QUESTIONS:
1. What do you think about the idea of the human resource department in a
professional office?

occurrence. Thus, this is a case of decision making under uncertainty and risk

4. Guidelines regarding case studies (annexure IV)
A case is a scenario that gives you the opportunity to identify problems and recommend a
course of action in a business situation. The case may be real or fictional, but will usually
represent a complex situation with no ready solutions.
Various case studies will be provided to students so that they can analyze real life issues
faced by managers in the organizations and then suggest solutions.
Stages in preparing a case analysis:
1. Understanding the case study.
2. Identify the core problem(s) in the case study.
3. Analyze the issues in the context of a theoretical framework.
4. Exploring alternative solutions with reference to a theoretical framework.
5. Choosing the best solution.
6. Making recommendations for action.
1. Understanding of case study:
Your first task is to understand the scenario you are given. When you read the
scenario you should identify the facts of the case. The following questions can guide
you in doing this.

What is the case study about?

What are the characters involved in the case study?

What are the different dilemmas in the case?

What are the actions undertaken in the case to resolve the problems?
As you are reading you will also need to fill in gaps based on your knowledge of
theory and of the world and ignore irrelevant details.
2. Identify the core problem in the case study:
As you identify the facts of the case you will begin to think about the problems and
to decide which problems are core problems. In doing this you will need to

Distinguish between symptoms of the major problems and the major problems
themselves.

54
Distinguish between immediate and longer term problems.
Management Quality Circle
Superior University Lahore
Lesson Plan Guideline

Find evidence to support your decision about what you believe to be the core
problems.
3. Analyze the issues in the context of a theoretical framework:
As you identify the core problem(s) you will begin to analyze the issues underlying
these problems. The following steps assist with this.

Identify any bias in the way the case is described.

Classify the factors that influence the problem.

Reflect on theoretical principles from your course that might explain aspects of
the case.

Apply analytical models from your course to further illuminate the situation.

Identify the decisions that need to be made.

Identify strategic issues.

Identify risk factors.

Identify historical precedents.
4. Exploring alternative solutions with reference to a theoretical framework:
As you are analyzing the issues you will begin to think about alternative solutions.
You should:

Consider the long and the short term

Define the alternative possible solutions

Compare the alternative solutions in regard to theoretical grounding, strengths
and weaknesses, risk factors.
5. Choosing the best solution:
As you explore the alternative solutions you will begin to decide on the best solution
for the organization in solving its problems. It is important at this stage to provide a
justification for the solution you choose.
6. Making recommendations for action:
When you have decided on the best solution you will be able to make a
recommendation or recommendations.
55
Management Quality Circle

case analysis report:
Introduction:
Describe the situation and identify the main problem.
Body:
Analyze the problem and the issues underlying the problem.
Present and analyze alternative solutions to the problem.
