“Sneak Peek” into the MBA Home
Building and Remodeling Expo!
As we advance through the month of November , new home builders,
remodeling companies, landscapers and home related
product service businesses are gearing up for the 2015
MBA Expo that will be held on January 9th through the 11th
2015 at the Wisconsin Center | Downtown Milwaukee.
Whether you’re looking to build a new home or looking for
new home ideas, this show is definitely worth your time.
For those who will be attending their first tradeshow, it’s important you go prepared. You will need today’s latest
smartphone or a pen and some paper to take notes as you
will be inundated with information from exhibitors competing
for your business. Once the show is over, your decision process will be made by going over the notes you took to compare those companies, products and services.

December 2014
Exhibitors often have to reverse roles and find themselves on the other side of the aisle
playing tradeshow attendee. According to a CEIR (Center for Exhibition Industry Research) study, 39% of attendees spend less than eight hours visiting a show. As with exhibiting, planning and preparation are essential to maximizing time on the trade show floor.
The following 30 points will help simplify the process next time you find yourself playing
visitor:

Know what you want to achieve by visiting the show and if the company is sending you understand
what your boss wants you to achieve by attending the show.
Develop a plan of which exhibitors you want to visit and then organize your list into two parts - ""must
see"" and ""want to see"" companies.
Decide how much time you want to spend at the show and then at each booth. Allow extra time for
browsing, distractions and waiting in lines.
Find out who else from your company is going to the show and develop a plan to maximize your visit,
especially at large shows.
Know what information you need to have from each exhibitor. Research different vendors to find out
how they differ and what is most important to you. Then plan intelligent questions to ask them.
Design a lead gathering form to research for specific products/services to make accurate compare
sons.
Make appointments with exhibitors you really want to meet with.
Get map of where exhibitors located and prioritize your route.
Take plenty of business cards to avoid filling out forms.
Pack comfortable shoes and clothing to wear on the show floor. Walking shows is extremely tiring.
Try insoles for extra comfort. Remember to leave room for things to bring back.
Take a light and comfortable ""carry-all"" for accumulated materials. Plastic bags are often uncomfort
able as they cut into your hands.
Make travel and hotel reservations early to maximize on discounted rates.
Stay at a hotel closest to the convention site to save on traveling and to give you a place to rest, sort
through information gathered, and refocus your energy.
Plan the seminars/workshops you want to attend. Split sessions with your colleagues to maximize
data gathering.
Pre-register for the event and arrive 30 minutes before opening to avoid standing in long lines.
At the Show:
16. Revise your plan at the show. The show directory and schedule often changes several times before a
show.
17. Collect information that is of interest to you or that might interest others in your company. Request
literature and samples be mailed instead of having to carry them with you.
18. Obtain a map of the city and know how to get to the convention center.
19. Tell exhibitors you are on a tight time schedule to avoid casual chatter and get straight down to busi
ness.
20. Look for networking opportunities. Network with industry leaders. Get invited to exhibitors hospitality
suites/ receptions. At workshops introduce yourself to people around you - hand out/collect business
cards. Hook up with new contacts at mealtimes.

“Since nearly 60 percent of our business comes from existing
customers and referrals, we are very serious about living up to
our mission,” Phil said. “Great service begins at the initial product
presentations and continues for life.”
Callen Construction has been providing home improvement
and remodeling services since 1986, when brothers Tom and
Phil Callen began the business in Franklin. The company moved
to Muskego in 1988, and a large showroom addition was constructed in 2006, providing customers an opportunity to view a
wide variety of sample products and installation methods.
“When we started our business, we established a mission
statement that puts forth what we truly believe,” explains Phil
Callen. “We genuinely care for people, our customers, and
their homes. We believe in the philosophy, ‘quality craftsmanship works.’ Because we’ve lived this mission statement, we
have been able to expand our services to include total exterior
remodels and interior renovations of kitchens, baths, basement
remodels, and attic conversions.”
Some projects have started as exterior remodeling and evolved
into a total renovation. “People who love their neighborhood
like to have the option of adapting their home to current and
future needs rather than look for a different home,” Phil says.
“We are happy to work with homeowners to develop long-term
plans and complete the work in stages.”
In addition to the Muskego showroom that offers a complete
line of interior and exterior home improvement products, Callen
has the Infinity Fiberglass Replacement Windows showroom in
Brookfield that features a complete line of Infinity windows and
patio doors as well as siding, roofing, entry doors, and more.
Involved in hundreds projects each year ranging from $500 to
$200,000-plus, Callen continues to communicate with past and
prospective clients by publishing a printed newsletter as well
as an e-newsletter, plus they survey each of their clients at the
conclusion of the job.
“Ensuring customers keep coming back means commitment
to continuous improvement in all service phases of our business and providing a consistent experience every time a call
is made to our office,” Phil said. “This is achieved through the
Callen TOP (Total Owner Protection) Program. This means
we bring to the table a solid reputation, quality name brand
products, a genuine concern for all issues surrounding the
remodeling experience, professional craftsmen, insurance
protection, written agreements with detailed specifications, a
carefully planned construction process, service and communication after the sale, and a lifetime workmanship warranty.”
Callen has won a variety of awards for its work, including the
Award of Distinction six times from the Vinyl Siding Institute,
and numerous design awards for its kitchen, bathroom, lower
level, and exterior home remodeling.
Callen is a member of several home improvement and area
associations, including the Metropolitan Builders Association
Remodelers Council, the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement
Council, National Kitchen & Bath Association, Better Business
Bureau, Angie’s List, the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce,
and the Brookfield Chamber of Commerce.
