Art Week
Welcome to THE
Singapore Art Week!
For art lovers, there’s no better time to be in Singapore than
during the Singapore Art Week (January 13 to 19), as it marks the
period when Singapore’s visual art scene is at its most vibrant.
It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in a flurry of
varied art experiences, from blockbuster exhibitions to emerging
stars from the region, from engaging talks and seminars to
special movie screenings. At the same time, you’ll be meeting
art collectors, art enthusiasts and artists from all over the world.
In fact, top international artists like Takashi Murakami and David
LaChapelle have dropped by in previous years, so fans might just
catch a glimpse of their favourite stars from the art world during
the week!
With so many exhibitions and activities going on around the city,
this all-in-one navigational guide is a must-have accessory. To
make finding your way around Singapore a breeze, we’ve zoomed
in on five key art precincts, so you can work through the shows
and events listed here—and still find time to kick back and soak
up the unique atmosphere of each neighbourhood.
So, with the itinerary sorted, you’re ready to embark on your
art journey.

Chinese artist Zi Peng’s latest solo show leads viewers
on a surrealistic voyage to embrace and experience
the balancing and harmonious effect of jade objects.
His innate ability to use oil to realistically capture the
brilliance of the stone, intermingling with his exuberant
imagination of incorporating traditional Chinese art
techniques, invites art-goers to reinterpret the stone’s
inherent meanings and values.

Founder of one of China’s first avant-garde art groups
after the Cultural Revolution in the 1980s, this is
Qiu Deshu’s retrospective exhibition at the gallery.
The artistic pioneer’s first solo show in Singapore
will uncover how his pictorial language has broken
through traditional Chinese brush and ink techniques
and aesthetics to become a visual metaphor for the
fracture and renewal of the last hundred years of
modern history.

Singaporean artist Hong Sek
Chern is fascinated by the notion
of the unknown, and the irrational
act of sleeping, for this solo show.
Drawing a direct influence from
Francisco Goya’s etching work
“The Sleep of Reason Produces

imagery of city dwellers who
struggle with sleep.

genre, inspired by his childhood, result in a set of
works that is both nostalgic and enchanting.

More than 20 artists come together in an important
collective exhibition which underlies the pluralistic
identity of the gallery. The multi-faceted show,
featuring names from all over the world, like Fabienne
Verdier, Bernar Venet, Ian Davenport, Nan Qi,
Sherman Ong and many more, hopes to bridge the
East and West art aesthetic of the artists and foster
dialogues between cultures, temporalities and artistic

This exhibition by Singaporean artist Dawn Ng
comprises a meticulous collection of curious, quirky
objects, whose labels reveal their significance beyond
the obvious and immediate. Together they constitute
a visual litany of funny, irreverent and, at times,
painfully honest observations about people and their
relationship to time, place, memory and love.

Powerful, dramatic and
aesthetically striking, Dialogues

Chinese ink artist Qin Feng’s bold
brushstrokes that lyrically combine
the gestural impulses of Western

materials such as coffee and tea,
the artist asserts a break with
tradition while also alluding to the
two cultural poles at play.

The exhibition showcases over 25 pieces of oil and
watercolour paintings by one of Southeast Asia’s top
watercolour artists, Ong Kim Seng. The Singaporean
veteran is highly acclaimed for his watercolour
works, which have a lyrical expressiveness and
poetic charm. Also on display are his oil landscapes,
a rarely explored aspect of his artistic oeuvre. An
accompanying publication will provide a concise and
comprehensive overview of the artist’s life and works.

Singapore’s premier contemporary art exhibition
invites you to reconsider the world we live in through
this multi-venue showcase. Titled If The World
Changed, the Biennale draws on the expertise of
27 curators and features over 100 artworks from
82 artists and artist collectives. This is also the first
time that more than half the works on show will be
Biennale commissions. The majority of artworks
are concentrated at venues in the Bras Basah and
Bugis areas (with Singapore Art Museum being the
festival’s base and information centre), making it
more convenient to move from one venue to another.
If you have a smartphone, you can download the
special Biennale app to guide you through three
special walking trails or even create your own trails
based on works that you are interested in. Exhibitions
ongoing at Singapore Art Museum, National Museum
of Singapore, Peranakan Museum, Waterloo Centre,

Gillman Barracks is home to 16 international galleries
presenting cutting edge exhibitions against lush
greenery and colonial buildings dating back to the
1930s. Named after General Webb Gillman, the
Barracks was the site of a fierce battle between
the British army and Japanese in 1942 during World
War II. The British military withdrew from Singapore
in 1971 and the Singapore Armed Forces moved in
until the 1990s. The Barracks was then re-developed
and launched in September 2012 as a centre for the
creation, exhibition and discussion of contemporary art
in Asia.
25
With a diverse offering of works and art spaces,
Gillman Barracks is a must-visit during your stay in
Singapore. Join us for the launch of a new series of
bespoke tours that marries insights to world-class
contemporary artworks with an introduction to the
Barracks’ rich history. Presented by the Friends of the
Museums (Singapore), the tours bring a refreshing
perspective to the Barracks’ treasure trove of art and
history. To register for a tour, log on to http://fomgillman-barracks.eventbrite.sg.

Artist talk Jan 18, 4pm
Free admission
Taking the system by which art is distributed as
his material, artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas
purchases existing artworks from the margins of
international art power and reconfigures them for
worldwide circulation. Through this, he explores the
evisceration of contemporary art’s globalising mission,
where art is taken to be ecologically contingent within
its complex networked reality.

A solo exhibition by Singaporean
artist Song-Ming Ang, whose
practice explores the contexts in
which music is produced. At the
heart of the show lies Backwards
Bach (2013)—a new, two-channel
video of the artist performing
on a harpsichord. Having never
received piano or harpsichord
training, Ang set himself the task
of learning to play the C Major
Prelude from J. S. Bach’s The
Well-Tempered Clavier (Book 1).
Ang then formulated a backwards
version of the Prelude and learnt
to play it, eventually filming both
performances in a Baroque-era
villa in Germany.

Orchard Road is not known as Singapore’s “shopping
street” for nothing. Named after the plantations that lined
it during the ‘40s, it is now home to the world’s most
prominent luxury labels and stylish indie boutiques. But
around here you’ll also find art galleries that are most
definitely worth a visit, in between all that shopping.

This site-specific installation celebrates the
collaboration between Singaporean architect Randy
Chan and British artist Philippa Lawrence under
AiRx, a cross-cultural arts programme organised
by the British Council and Singapore International
Foundation. The interactive public art installation was
developed during their residencies in Singapore and
London and is curated by Tolla Sloane of Give Art
Space. It will move to London in the summer of 2014.

Cai Lei Solo Exhibition
Jan 19 – Feb 10

Cai Lei’s art is infused with emotion. The artist’s intent is to
provoke reflection on the facts of existence that are often
avoided: the passing of time and its consequences. Yet
he shows an appreciation for restraint by keeping the art
works’ backgrounds simple and clean, letting them highlight
the subject of each work rather than distract the audience.
