Tregear Public School
A quality education in a caring environment
This is the last Newsletter of the Term. The last couple of weeks have had
their ups and downs. Firstly we learnt at the opening of the Tregear Festival
that a long term supporter and life member of Tregear Public Schools P&C,
Jim Maynard, had passed away from cancer.
Jim Maynard was an active member of the Tregear community and was
always trying to get the most support for Tregear. He had a lot to do with
Housing NSW in the area, Diabetes Australia, Tregear Festival Committee,
the RSL and Tregear Public School.
Jim always ensured we had a good representation at ANZAC Day and made
sure that the school was participating in the community. Jim always made
sure our students knew that war was not good and that they always had a
choice in how they handled conflict. He was a member of the British Army
who disassembled Gas Chambers in Germany after the war. Jim moved his
family to Australia in the 60s to work with QANTAS. He was one of the first
Presidents of the Tregear P&C and has been involved with the school for
over 40 years.
Each week after his heart surgery, he would walk up to the school once or
twice as part of his recovery and we would have a chat. He would always
talk about how proud he was of his grandchildren and what they had
achieved, talk politics, talk soccer (we were both Tottenham supporters) and
what was going on in the school
and community. He was a man I
admired both for his honesty and
commitment to the community.
He never asked for anything for
himself and was always fighting
the battle of hospital services,
pensioner rights and housing in
Tregear. He was one of the most
intelligent men I have had the
pleasure to meet. As Charlie
Lowles said Jim Maynard was
“Mr Tregear” and a good bloke. I
am honoured to have known Jim
and hope that the legacy he
wanted of Tregear remaining a
strong community will continue.
Thank you Jim
Maynard for
everything you have done for the
school and the community. We
will always remember you and
hold you in our hearts. We will be
holding a fundraiser in Term 4 to
raise money for cancer research
in the name of Jim.
The Tregear festival was another great success with
our students stealing the show again from the start.
Our choir and dance groups performed magnificently
and had the crowd wanting more. Thank you to all the
teachers and students who made this a success.

NAPLAN results went home in week 8. Our initial
analysis is that the school has made a lot of
improvement in most areas. I would like to remind
parents that this is a one off test all the way back at
the start of Term 2 and is not a true reflection of the
capabilities of our students. If you would like to know
how your child is going please make a time to discuss
their progress with their classroom teacher. I have
seen firsthand the quality of our students work and
their dedication to learning.
I had a meeting with Asset Management last week
and we possibly could be getting Area D (the netball
court) resurfaced so that the area is again safe for
students to play.
We have also been able to have a quote for
playground games to be painted on the concrete in
both the infants and primary playgrounds. This is
something the SRC has been passionate about this
year, creating and presenting a proposal, researching
different games, asking students what they would like
and where they would be most utilized.

help make the afternoon fun.

School Attendance
Education is very important as we all know. We know
that you want your children to do well at school so
that they can make good choices in life. However, if
they are missing days at school and/or arriving late
and leaving early, their chances of success are
hindered. Please make sure your child attends every
day and is here on time.
Obviously, there may be times when attendance is
not possible so we ask you to make sure you send a
note or medical certificate to his/her teacher about
this. If you need to take your child out of school, even
for one day, you must inform the office. Any
prolonged unexplained absences will be followed up
with phone calls and unfortunately have to be
reported if considered too many.
Our School Excursion Policy states that children
attending School Excursions or Sporting Events
who’s attendance or partial attendance does not meet
required standards will be refused participation on
excursions. Please make sure your child is at school
every day and on time.
Staff Car Park
A school of 350 students is bound to be a busy
place. Safety of all staff and students is always a
concern and one of our highest priorities. The
beginning and end of the school day are both always
hectic, especially with many of our students arriving
at school via car. Parents, please be aware that the
staff car park is for staff cars only and that no child
should be dropped off or picked up from that area,
nor should they be walking through the car park for
safety reasons. We have been made aware of some
near misses from children walking through the car
park.

The statistics around cyberbullying are sketchy,
mainly because it often goes unreported. What we do
know is that the likelihood of children being bullied
online or over the phone increases as they get older
and use technology more frequently. Find out more:

How Much Screen Time?
‘Screen time' used to mean how many hours you
spent watching TV and playing on the computer.
However, with the growing number of digital devices
on offer today, the question of what screen time
means now is far more complex. Find out more:

When Lunch Comes Home ... Again
Almost nine out of 10 Australian parents say children's
resistance is a major obstacle in their efforts to
provide a healthy diet and in many cases school
lunches are one of the battlegrounds. But it's a battle
families can do without and there are some simple
steps to help avoid it. Find out more:
