Phrasebook for Abraham Path Israel
English – Hebrew – Arabic
A Brief Pronunciation Guide
We have tried as much as possible to transliterate the terms in this phrasebook in an easy-to-follow, non-technical format. For pronunciation aid,
emphasized syllables are written in bold text. In general, we have spelled out each word in the standard Latin alphabet; in both Hebrew and
Arabic, however, there are a few sounds that do not exist in English and may be hard to convey in transliteration. Below is a brief key to some of
these sounds. Don’t worry if you aren’t entirely sure how to pronounce a certain word, though; native speakers will be very forgiving and eager to
help!
Hebrew Pronunciation
Over all, Hebrew pronunciation is very simple to most English-speakers. Only two sounds may require explanation:
kh – a guttural, aspirated sound coming from the back of the throat
‘ – used to indicate a glottal stop (a break between sounds)
Arabic Pronunciation
Several Arabic letters do not have exact equivalents in the Latin alphabet. We have used the following system to express these sounds:
q – similar to the k sound, but in the back of the throat; sometimes pronounced as a glottal stop or as a g
‘ – a contraction in the back of your throat, almost as if you are swallowing; if in doubt, pronounce as an extension of the surrounding vowels
ğ – like a throaty French r sound
kh – as in Hebrew; a guttural, aspirated sound coming from the back of the throat
