STEAM
Academy
Science-Technology-Engineering-AgricultureMathematics Academy
The STEAM Academy is a collaborative
effort between Burke County Public
Schools, North Carolina School for the
Deaf, and North Carolina School of
Science and Math, Western Piedmont
Community College. The goal of the
STEAM Academy is to provide
opportunities for students to participate in
academically challenging coursework,
using technology, to solve real-world
problems. The STEAM Academy is located
in the newly renovated Jeter Hall
Building on the campus of NCSD.
Our AIG students in grades 3-8 have a
unique opportunity to attend the STEAM
Academy twice a year. Classes will be
aligned with the New Standard Course of
Study or Common Core Curriculum.
Advanced learning will take place during
the day at the STEAM Academy.
2
AIG Specialists will conduct the classes
with input and assistance from the
STEAM Academy’s facilitator, Holly
Minnear.
Students will participate in higher- level
activities that challenge them to think
creatively.
Parents will receive a permission form
with the date and approximate departure
and arrival times.
There is no charge for parents or the
school. The AIG Department is providing
this opportunity with the support of the
STEAM Academy Principal, Mr. Jonathan
Clontz. Our goal is to expand on the
program.
Nurturing Program for
students in grades K-2
Our AIG Specialists have a unique opportunity to
share the advanced lesson resources and
activities with elementary teachers in grades K-2.
Within the components of the program they will
also provide information to teachers on the early
characteristics of a potentially gifted student.
AIG Specialists will provide on-going activities
and daily lessons for classroom teachers to help
guide the nurturing process.
Supporting teachers, modeling lessons, and
observing students will be part of the AIG
Specialists’ role. By providing support,
information, and training, we will strengthen the
Nurturing Program. The Nurturing Program will
not be limited to a brief visit from a facilitator,
but rather part of the daily routine.
Together we can
inspire the young!

Testing Program Options
Our testing program has been revised to assist parents with
more choices, as well as provide for the developmental
needs of students. Our testing program will be conducted
twice a year, (fall and spring). Students in grades 3-12 are
eligible for testing. Second grade students are eligible for
spring testing only. Students who qualify for screening will
be given one opportunity during the year to test (fall or
spring). Students who qualify in the fall will be placed in
AIG classes upon verification of the test results. (Lower
grades, K-2 will fully participate in the Nurturing Program)

Our AIG Specialists’ Roles
We are proud of our dedicated AIG Specialists who serve the teachers and
students in our system. Each AIG Specialist has years of experience and
is AIG licensed. They have remained current on trends and issues facing
AIG students and teachers. They will continue to serve our teachers and
students in the following ways:
1. Model lessons, provide classroom support for the AIG teacher, help transition
from pull-out classes to inclusion, (at all levels), develop and share advanced
activities, materials, and resources aligned with the New Standard Course of
Study/ Common Core Curriculum (Nurturing Program for K-2, and core
academic areas for 3-5).
2. Offer on-site training and planning support during the teachers’ planning
period. Offer local support and trainings after school so more teachers can be
involved in the AIG program, provide resource materials and on-line websites to
assist the teacher with instruction.
3. Teach advanced lessons at the STEAM Academy for all AIG students in grades
3-8 twice a year. These lessons will be inquiry based and will utilize critical
thinking skills, problem- solving, working as a team, and incorporating
technology. Debriefing sessions during lunch will help connect the activity and
extend the learning into the classroom.
4. Screen and test twice a year at schools, with support from the AIG Director.
Assist with testing at middle and high school.
5. Provide supports at the upper levels for students and teachers.
Together we can hold tight to our goals!

Thank You
As the AIG Department attempts to increase
services for AIG students, the transition can
sometimes be a bumpy one. As change occurs, so
will the growing pains. I want to extend my
thanks to you for your willingness to grow with us.
Our plan will be reviewed each year and your
input will be vital to continue our progress toward
our 21st Century Goals. Please feel free to call me
at any time to discuss your ideas and thoughts
