JUNE 2014 THE HISTORY CHANNEL – 50 YEARS AGO AT STUDIO CENTER By Karla Karanza Gunsmoke began on radio in 1952 with William Conrad (a.k.a. TV’s beloved portly private detective Cannon) reading the part of Matt Dillon. In 1955 the popular radio show moved to the television screen where it was destined to become one of the longest running shows in television history. The series was in its ninth season when it moved onto the CBS Studio Center lot where it remained housed in Stages 1 and 3 for over ten years. The hero, Matt Dillon, was a no nonsense tough guy, and as much as Conrad sounded the part, he just didn’t look it. So, rumor has it that Hollywood It-Guy, John Wayne, was the favorite to take on the role. That rumor seems to come from TV Guide, so take it for what it’s worth. One thing is for certain, Wayne did introduce the first episode of Gunsmoke to television audiences along with the new Matt Dillon, actor James Arness: “Good evening. My name’s Wayne. Some of you may have seen me before. I hope so. I’ve been kicking around Hollywood a long time. I’ve made a lot of pictures out here. All kinds. Some of them have been westerns and that’s what I’m here to tell you about tonight. A western. A new television show called Gunsmoke. When I first heard about the show Gunsmoke, I knew there was only one man to play in it. James Arness. He’s a young fellow, and maybe new to some of you. But I’ve worked with him and I predict he’ll be a big star. And now I’m proud to present Gunsmoke.” The premise behind the show was Marshal Matt Dillon policing Dodge City, a town in the wild west where people often have no respect for the law. He faces the typical problems associated with frontier life: cattle rustling, gunfights, land disputes and bar brawls. Joining Marshal Dillon on his daily adventures were Milburn Stone as Dr. G, or Doc Adams, Ken Curtis as Festus Haggen The cast clockwise from back left: James Arness (Matt Dillon), Ken Curtis (Festus), Amanda Blake (Kitty) and Milburn Stone (Doc Adams). Top Right: Dennis Weaver as Chester and James Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon walk down Western Street along what is now Gunsmoke Avenue. The street was also recreated inside Stage 3. and Amanda Black rounding out the cast as the awesome Miss Kitty. Even in 1953, director Norman MacDonnell admitted “Kitty is just someone Matt has to visit every once in a while. We never say it, but Kitty is a prostitute, plain and simple.” The show aired 10 p.m. on Tuesday nights, which definitely meant it was not for the kids. Level heads, sound judgment and brave action are called for and Marshal Dillon has them all. In an early episode of Gunsmoke, Doc shot a man in cold blood who refused to let Doc’s buggy through to see a sick person. In another episode, Festus murders a man who raped his cousin. In yet another episode, a kindly ranch woman stabs the sickly man who killed her husband. Justice meant whatever Marshal Dillon thought it meant. How’s them for “good ole’ days?” The show was cancelled in 1975, after a 20 year run, despite still ranking in the top 30. Arness had been with the show the whole time. Thirty other westerns had come and gone during that period. Gunsmoke was replaced on air by The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its spin offs Rhoda and Phyllis. These shows also filmed on the Studio lot. Never fear, though. That wasn’t the end of the Gunsmoke saga. TV Movies, starting in 1987 and continuing through 1994 graced American screens featuring the continuing story of Marshal Matt Dillon and the city known as Dodge. 1 P R O DUCTION SCHEDULE ADR. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5091 Backlot Services. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5667 Carla’s Café Commissary. . . . . . . . . . . 5692 Car Wash. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5042 Client Services. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5099 CPR & First Aid Training (monthly) . . . . 5256 Emergency Line. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5555 Graphics. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5395 Grip Dept. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5711 Hair Salon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6000 Health Wheels . . . . . . . . . . . . 818.876.4755 House Internet Access. . . . . . . . . . . . . 5218 Janitorial . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5966 Joe’s Gym . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5099 Lighting . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5349 Notary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5837 Parking Signs. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5670 Paint Dept . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5396/5858 Safety & Environmental Concerns. . . . 4444 Safety Hotline (anonymous reporting). . . . 6078 Sign Shop . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5395 Special Effects. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5671 Supply Station. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5001 Take 5 Coffee. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5979 Telephones. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4800 RECYCLING Stage and Media . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5661 Paint, Solvents, Spray Cans, Rags, Brush Wash, Batteries,Videotape, CDs, DVDs Office Recycling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5966 Toner Cartridges, Paper, Cans E-Waste Recycling. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5396 Anything with a circuit board, ie TVs, Monitors, Recorders, Keyboards and Florescent Lights Pens. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . interoffice to TVC RECORD CENTER, RM. 73 American Comedy Awards Winners and Nominees The Millers (Eye Productions/CBS) CSI Cyber (CBS Television Studios/CBS) Entertainment Tonight (CBS TV Distribution/CBS) The Insider (CBS TV Distribution/CBS) Last Man Standing (20th Century Fox TV/ABC) Brooklyn Nine-Nine (NBC Studios/NBC) Young & Hungry (Prodco/ABC Family) The Odd Couple (Eye Productions/CBS) The Talk Attention all CBS & Production Drivers: Please obey all RED LIGHTS near the stages by stopping and shutting off your engine until the red light turns off. JUNE 2014 By Maggie Leung Top row from left to right: Amanda Tomasetti, Kevin Ellis, Angelica Witherspoon-Cassanova, Meredith Willis, Ryan Keleher Bottom from left to right: Olivia Neir and Maggie Leung The CBS Bowling Team took home the Championship trophy last month in the Entertainment Bowling League playoffs. The CBS team, comprised of nine assistants across the Studio Center lot, beat out seven other studios, networks and agencies including Sony, 20th Century Fox, FX, Paradigm Talent Agency, United Talent Agency, ABC, and NBC. After eight weeks of play, the CBS team found themselves in the second seed going into the playoffs. They dominated ABC in the first round and went on to play against a formidable Paradigm team. Still trailing by the ninth frame, the CBS team was near elimination until they delivered strike after strike in the 10th frame to pull into the lead. In the third and final round against Sony, CBS had over 100 pins to make up due to the handicap differential between the two teams. In nail biting fashion, CBS managed to win by a mere six pins to take the championship title! The CBS team is excited to compete in next season’s expanded league in hopes of winning back to back titles.
