HK ENGINEERING´s three Race Gullwings were the only Mercedes in this large field of competitors. It is clear that the Le Mans Classic has meanwhile evolved into the largest Classic Car event worldwide, a gathering of thousands of vehicles of any vintage car maker. From toy cars to works of art, clothes of the epoch, Rock and Roll shows to an Art Curial auction – anything depicting the theme of vintage cars is present in an county fair like atmosphere. All the important makers presented themselves in appropriate style; all but Mercedes Benz, disappointing all of their supporters. So, once again, it was left to HK-Engineering to hold up the banners at an international event. And we did so spectacularly: In spite of massive international competition our cars always drove at 2/14 www.hk-engineering.com the front of their fields. Unfortunately, however, our vehicles encountered a streak of bad luck. Patrick Simon, ranking second overall, dropped out due to a cracked rear axle shaft. The two remaining Race Gullwings, at times ranking first and second in the third and final heat, were penalized for delayed pit lane entry but still managed to finish in the front third of their field. The drivers, nevertheless, enjoyed the competition and are thrilled by the cars high potential. 3/14 www.hk-engineering.com The first two places for two of the race gullwings from the HK-ENGINEERING race team: 1st place: Pfessdorf on Startno. 34 and 2nd place: Oelschlägel on Startno. 25th 4/14 www.hk-engineering.com SCHLOSS DYCK CLASSIC DAYS 2014 Early in August, the 300SL Club, accompanied by HK Engineering, celebrated this extraordinary cars´ 60th birthday at the Schloss Dyck Classic Days. The events master mind, Markus Herfort, had reserved an area next to the castle for us and had organized two exclusively 300SL runs for us. Hans Kleißl had arranged for Mr. Bäuerle to narrate about his times with Max Hoffmann, former General Importer for the US. His excellent lecture gave us plenty of insight in the 300SL´s “genesis” as well as its early marketing and distribution. Among many others, two 300SLs were entered at Germany´s most prestigious and best stocked Concours, the “Jewels in the Parc”, being held at the “Orangery at the Watercastle”. One of these, a very original 1957 Mercedes 300SL Roadster, was presented by a client of HK-Engineering. At the Concours d´Elegance, which saw all but one of the vehicles displaying valid FIVA ID cards, Hans Kleißl himself presented a 1957 Gullwing. This unusual car comes with a most exquisite race history: Piloted by gentleman driver Gunter Thiel, it finished first at the international “Eifelrennen auf dem Nürburgring” on June 30th, 1957. This Gullwing was factory equipped to race specifications, including NSL engine, performance suspension and Rudge type wheels and has been well kept by private collectors after it was sold by its original owner. This explains the low mileage of only 50 000 kilometers as well as the cars´ excellent original overall condition. It came as no surprise to experts that this Gullwing won the category “Coupes of Class” at the “Concours d´Elegance” and, on the next day, received the FIVA award for best maintained post war vehicle at the Concours. Winning this trophy comes as consequence to HK Engineering´s 30 year old philosophy of cautiously preserving original cars, eventually resulting in higher (not only ideally) values than restored vehicles. A lot of beautiful cars met at „HK-ENGINEERING“ at the Schloss Dyck Classic Days. www.hk-engineering.com „HK-ENGINEERING“ and the „MB 300 SL Club“ The award-winning 1957 Gullwing with racing history www.hk-engineering.com AVD OLDTIMER GRAND PRIX 2014 This year, HK Engineering entered three Gullwings at the AVD Oldtimer Grand Prix held at the Nürburgring. In spite of the usual capricious weather conditions, Christian Pfeßdorf managed to win the first race of his class, Race and GT cars upto 1960, on Sunday Hans Kleißl repeated this performance. Saturday´s race was, as usual, the events highlight, the finish accompanied by a spectacular fireworks. Also, for the first time, we shared a tent in the paddock with our buddies from Stuttgart´s Motorworld. Our Gullwings´ achievements received lots of attention and praise, competing against Maseratis, Lister Jaguars, Lotus Racecars as well as other Grand Prix legends of the epoche. 5/14 www.hk-engineering.com 6/14 www.hk-engineering.com Fotos right side: C. Jäger PEBBLE BEACH CONCOURS D´ELEGANCE 2014 This year for the 62nd time the Pebble Beach Concours d‘Elegance is the highlight of events for classic cars. The attraction is so great, that around the actual event some 30 other events have gathered. The auctions which are held on the Monterey Peninsula are a global barometer for vintage prices. So it is not surprising that six auction houses offer vehicles in their auctions and over a period of several days there were a total of sixteen 300 SL cars for sale. None of the nine Roadsters and seven Gullwings was sold under a million dollars. Even for real restoration objects there have been paid over a million dollars. The tendency to original, well-preserved vehicles seems to be unbroken. For example an ordinary Gullwing (though second-hand, but otherwise no special history, but still had the first leather and rudge wheels wheels from the factory) sold for 2.53 million dollars (1.9 million euros) in the auction.
