No More Laissez-faire Leadership
By Cecil E.W. Wade
It is obvious that while
the Gaston Browne led
Labour Party was in opposition fighting to manipulate the reins of Government, they were also busy
arranging their ducks in
a row, both mentally and
physically.
This can be substantiated by the fact that within
hours of its political victory, it was able to sign
an agreement with the
Yida Investment Group.
We understand that the
Group had been in contact
with the Baldwin Spencer
Government whose laissez-faire style of leader-
ship prohibited progress.
It was reported that
several other foreign investment
opportunities
had been lost because of
the hands-off approach
inherent in Baldwin Spencer’s non-performance.
One has to wonder
whether this was not a
deliberate act he executed in accordance with the
Machiavellian teaching,
which says: --- “And those
whom he offends, remaining poor and scattered, are
never able to injure him;
whilst the rest being uninjured are easily kept quiet,
and at the same time are
anxious not to err for fear
it should happen to them
as it has those who have
been despoiled”.
This
reflected the conditions
which subsisted.
It is ironic that when
people have no money, the
financial experts come out
of the woodwork to advise
you, through conferences
and lectures as to the best
way to invest.
Then the holistic specialists will tell you all
about the special foods
you must eat in order to
stay healthy. Meanwhile
you are struggling to get a
basic meal.
It is tantamount to
when you are going
through difficulty in life,
and an 0beah man tells you
to pay him some money so
that he could turn your life
around. These vultures are
always circling, anxiously
awaiting the opportunity
to descend upon the vulnerable.
Baldwin Spencer accused Prime Minister Gaston Browne of acting with
indecent haste. Maybe this
is because it shows him
up as being a do-nothing
Prime Minister, leading a
bunch of lazy, ear-ringed,
and bejewelled clowns!
Some of them scarcely went to their offices but
cont’d on pg 7

cont’d from pg 6
continued to collect their
full salaries, together with
all the wealth they were
able to accumulate during
their tenure; as they move
from rags to great riches,
while most people lose the
standard of living which
they had acquired under
the previous Labour Party
Government.
The UPP Government
was quick to pull a red
herring across the trail
by passing the Integrity
In Public Office Act--- a
mere farce, since none of
them complied by disclosing the sources of their
newly acquired wealth,
in addition to which they
would be paid their full
salary as pension after
serving in Parliament for
two terms, to live happily
ever after. Now you know
whey de money garn!
The fact that Antigua
and Barbuda had remained
in a state of inertia under
the UPP Government for
10 years, will necessitate
rapid and prudent decisions on urgent matters in
connection with the economy.
We, in Antigua and
Barbuda, have become
conditioned to believing
that the longer a transaction takes to be completed, the more complex it
is; and that procrastination
will produce better results
and justify the costs incurred. For instance, you
will submit the documents
for a passport renewal and
be told that it will take two
(2) weeks to process.
But a time and motion
study of that transaction
will probably show that
the documents remained
about three (3) days on
someone’s desk before
receiving the initial attention.
Then transferred to
another desk or put in a
drawer for two (2) more
days before being misplaced for another period. If the transaction had
been handled proficiently,
it might have taken only a
day or two to process.
Some are questioning
the removal of visa requirement from China and
South America to travel
to Antigua. They believe
that this situation will attract some undesirables.
But this is not necessarily
so, though there is some
risk involved.
But the risk has always been there. Even
the great United States of
America with all its security systems, have had
undesirables infiltrating its
borders. But in spite of all
this, a country has to keep
going forward or it will
stagnate.
It was said also that
government is dispensing with our patronage by
making lands available to
foreign investors which
will jeopardise our future.
But this should be
tempered with the fact
that we need foreign investment immediately, because if we cannot survive
the present, we have no
future.
We also have to use
something to attract investment. No one will
just pump money into our
economy because they
like us.
They expect to earn
dividends from their investments. And one has
got to use what one has,
in order to get what one
wants.
When in 1955 the Bahama Tourism Industry
was in the doldrums, the
government made available 50,000 acres of land to
an American lumberman
named Wallace Groves,
together with generous
concessions on taxes, customs and excise duties,
etc. in order to transform
the scrub lands of Grand
Bahama into Freeport, a
centre of commerce, industry, hotels and casinos.
Today, the Bahamas remains the tourism capital
of the Caribbean.
The plight of the lower
echelon of society must be
given priority over all else
by the Labour Party Government; any deviation
from that will contribute
caribtimes.com

to its demise at the polls,
as was the case with the
UPP Government. The
disadvantaged majority of
Antiguans and Barbudans
(the goats) had only hope
to hold on to, while awaiting the salvation of the Labour Party.
Now that the Labour
Government is in power,
that hope has metamorphosed into anxiety, because the people want to
get out of their squalid existence.
The Government will
have to move hastily to
change the plight of the
suffering majority. There
are a lot of people who
have been living without
the basic amenities of life
and scarcely any food to
eat.
These people are not
really interested in PIT
(personal income tax), neither do they worry about
CIP (citizenship by investment programme); their
primary concern is not to
be left to RIP – [requiescant in pace].
Under the prevailing
circumstances, there is no
way the Gaston Browne
Administration can neglect to act with all deliberate haste to get Antigua
out of the economic morass it has been plunged
into the by UPP Government.
There can be no more
laissez-faire affair here!

Biblical means of dealing with crime
Crime is rooted in
the sinful nature of man.
Sin is acting contrary to
God’s standard and is revealed in his Law-Word.
Crime is unlawful
behavior (as delineated by God in his Word)
that usually threatens the
life, liberty, or property
of others, either directly
(such as robbery, or murder) or indirectly (such
as treason or perjury).
There is criminal activity that potentiality
only affects one’s own
person, such as drug use.
Such activity is still an assault on life (and our lives
are not our own since God
who created us ultimately
owns us, we are stewards
of our bodies.
Crime comes under
the jurisdiction of state or
civil government.

or man’s.
While all law legislates morality, it is very important to understand that man cannot legislate
goodness.
Laws cannot change the heart
of man; they cannot elevate man
above the level of their faith and
morality.
As mentioned earlier, a society must understand the source of
crime before they can effectively
deal with crime.
The bible clearly states that
wickedness and sin in the heart of
man is the source of crime (Genesis 6:5,11). As a result of man’s
sin – that is, disobedience to God
– evil entered his heart.
What was in the heart of man
manifested itself in his actions (the
world was filled with violence).
Recognizing the true nature of man
– he is a sinful, fallen being in need
of a Savior – is the beginning place
for a society to correctly deal with
crime. Both preventative and corrective measures must be taken.
With the recent increase of
crime in the society and moreso
the number of murders, thirteen to
date, and some which remain unsolved, law enforcements agencies
have become rather weary of the
situation.
Even the prison, the place
where people are sent to pay for
their crimes which they have committed, have also become a place
where gruesome crimes are taking
place. Never before have we seen
or heard of such incidents in our
lone penal institution.
Deeply engrossed in all of this
is the need for moral transformation and not more legislation. It is
not just saying, build a new prison
or changing management, it must
greater than that.
Until we deal with the situation
from a faith -based perspective and
recognize that there are demonic
forces at work, that people are held
as captives and enslaved by their
habits and behavior, then our efforts will continue to be futile.
What legislation and other methods cannot do, a praying
Church can do.
Praying Christians need to
stand in the gap, come together and confess, repent and pray
for the atrocities which are taking
place in the country.
These are serious times and serious times demand urgency and
passion for deliverance to come to
our nation.

Horticultural Principles Seminar
hailed a huge success
By Terry V La Ragy
Participants who were
involved in the Environmental Division’s ‘Horticultural Principles Seminar’
have praised the organisers
for a most successful event.
The seminar was part
of the Divisions ‘Arbour
Month’ of activities that
focused on key areas like
when to plant trees according to weather patterns,
types of soil and propagation techniques such as air
layering and grafting.
Speaking with one of
the participants, former Police Commissioner Ms Delano Christopher at the end
of the seminar on Friday,
she explained “I enjoyed
the seminar immensely as
the knowledge gained will
help me control my plants
better”.
“Having both fruit trees
and flowers in my garden
the main issue that was
bothering me was pertain-
ing to the pests, however
I have learnt now through
this course what sort of
products I can use on them
to eradicate the problems
I’ve been having”, Ms
Christopher said.
Many locals are turning to growing fruit trees
in their own yards as they
trust in the freshness of
their produce compared to
what is offered by the local
supermarkets.
“We, as locals, buy
produce from overseas and
even from our local farmers, but you cannot be sure
what these people spray the
fruits and vegetables with,
so if your growing your
own you know exactly
how fresh the crop is”, Ms
Christopher explained.
The Environmental Division encourages everyone where possible to try
their hand at horticulture
as a way of reducing the
amount of imported foods
coming into Antigua and
Barbuda as well as realising the health benefits of
eating fresh crops.
“If I’m growing eggplant and someone else in
the village is growing sorrel
then we can exchange, providing for everyone in the
community, the tradition
that used to happen around
the island,” Ms Christopher
lamented.
Senior Environment
Officer, Ms Ruleta Camacho added, “It is important
as students of this seminar
that you use the knowledge gained and share the
knowledge amongst others
for the benefit of our own
environment”.
The seminar concluded with all participants
receiving a certificate for
completing the two day
workshop with the Environmental Division planning similar courses in the
future.

Optimist Club of St

‘Treez 2015’ Project
with MP Dean Jonas
By Terry V La Ragy
The Optimist Club of St
John’s continued its ‘Treez
2015’ project on Saturday
morning in the company of
Member of Parliament for
St George, the Honourable
Dean Jonas.
Postponed from last
week due to inclement
weather the group planted trees at ‘Heroes Park’
on Factory Road with the
enthusiastic support of the
young people from Mr Jonas’s constituency.
The Optimist Group,
which is part of the Caribbean District within Optimist International is headed
by the Governor of the Caribbean District, Antiguan
Ms Barbara Arrindell.
The ’Treez 2015’ project is an initiative whereby the group, in assistance
with the general public are
asked to plant in excess of
2015 trees throughout the
Caribbean between October 1st 2014 - January 1st
2015.
Since the Optimist
Group’s inception it has
come together to try and
help the young people of
the day with its motto being “Bringing Out the Best
in Children” and therefore
trees planted throughout
this exercise must be in the
presence of a child.
The Antigua and Barbuda arm of the Optimist
Group have so far planted
trees with many dignitaries including Prime Minister, the Honourable Gaston
Browne in an effort to teach
our children the importance
of preserving our environment.
It can and does occur virtually anywhere. The largest grouping of reported incidents occurs either in the
home of the victim or the assailant’s home.
However, it is important to be aware of all potentially hazardous areas: remote areas, vacant lots, parking lots, garages, public areas, schools, on the street,
beaches at night, alleys, school playgrounds, deserted
buildings, shopping centers, stairwells, and Laundromats.
What to do if you are assaulted
Your immediate concern will be obtaining proper
medical and psychological help. This help is available.
To get help, immediately call the Police whether or not
you decide to later prosecute. As soon as possible you
will be taken to a doctor or hospital.
Even though it may be your initial impulse, DO
NOT douche, shower, change your clothes or disturb
the crime scene. Be sure you don’t destroy any valuable
physical evidence. Most victims feel strongly about
wanting the offender caught so he will not be able to
harm another person. Rapists are repeaters, but they
also rarely retaliate against their victims.
Medical Treatment
Procedures differ among doctors and hospitals.
Generally, you will be asked your name, date of birth,
brief medical history and perhaps some other general
questions. You will first be checked and treated for any
visible physical injuries. If necessary, a complete internal examination will also be performed by a qualified
physician. This is to establish the extent of any injuries
as well as collect any specimen for prosecution purposes. When appropriate, you will be offered medication
to prevent venereal disease or pregnancy.

Black box recovered from crash that
killed prominent pastor, Myles Munroe
NASSAU, Bahamas,
CMC – The Department
of Civil Aviation here says
the information recorded
on the black box from the
jet that crashed on Grand
Bahama on Sunday killing
all nine people on board,
including religious leader
Dr. Myles Munroe will be
analyzed in Washington
DC.
Investigators recovered the plane’s cockpit
voice recorder and digital
electronic engine monitors
on Tuesday.
Authorities hope the
recovery of the box will
lead to answers about how
the Learjet crashed into a
construction crane in Freeport on the island of Grand
Bahama.
In a statement on
Wednesday, officials said
there is no definite timeline
on how long the analysis
will take.
The news came as the
final victim’s name was released.
He has been identified as Diego DeSantiago,
38, a resident of Colorado
in the United States, who
frequently travelled with
Munroe as a translator.
The team of investigators combing the crash site
includes officials from the
Department of Civil Aviations Aircraft Accident Investigation and Prevention
Unit, the jet’s manufacturers, the Federal Aviation
Administration in the US
and the National Transportation Board.
The plane was registered in the US.
Dr. Myles Munroe,
founder and president of
Bahamas Faith Ministries
International (BFMI), his
wife Ruth, Dr Richard
Pinder, a BFMI executive,
Religious Leader Dr. Myles Munroe
Lavard and Rudel Parks,
BFMI youth ministers, and
their son Johanan were on
board.
The pilot Captain
Stanley Thurston, co-pilot
Frankan Cooper and DeSantiago, were also killed.
They were heading
to Grand Bahama for the
2014 Global International
Summit, scheduled to be
hosted by Munroe.
The plane crashed
shortly after 5pm on Sunday, it’s believed that bad
weather was the contributing factor.
Prime Minister Perry
Christie who visited the
crash site with Transport

as a “tragic, unpredictable
loss of life”.
Opposition leader sued by former secretary
KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent,
CMC – Lawyers for Rishatha Nicholls, the former secretary to Opposition
Leader Arnhim Eustace, have written
to him claiming that he has defamed
their client and are demanding apologies and compensation.
The Law Firm of Marks &
Marks, in two letters to Eustace on
November 12, said that he had defamed Nicholls during calls he made
to a radio programme on April 23 and
24, this year.
The lawyers contend that Eustace
in his statements on April 23 “meant
and were understood to mean that
Mrs. Rishatha Nicholls was involved
in corruption and had committed the
criminal act of theft, an offence that is
punishable by imprisonment.
“By your false and malicious utterances, you have gravely injured
our client’s character and reputation,”
the attorneys said, demanding that
Eustace issues a public apology on
the same radio programme and pub-
lish the apology in the local newspapers.
They are also demanding that Eustace fully retracts “these false and
malicious statements and publicly
admit that they are untrue.
“This retraction can be included
in the public apology or published
separately both on the said radio programme and local newspapers,” the
attorneys said. They are also demanding that Eustace gives “a written un-

St Lucia opposition says gov’t must
‘come clean’ on state of economy
CASTRIES, St. Lucia CMC –
The main opposition United Workers
Party (UWP) is calling on the Kenny
Anthony administration to provide a
report on the state of the local economy. The party is also wants the government to come up with possible
solutions to the many issues confronting the island, as it relates to the current economic crisis.
UWP leader Allen Chastanet at
a press conference Wednesday said
the time has come for government to
stop hiding the truth. He urged that
Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony to
come clean on what is really causing
the economy to continue to move in a
downward spiral.
According to Chastanet, the government seems intent on talking about
everything else, but not dealing with
the state of the economy, which in his
opinion should be a key priority.
“None of us are seeing any turnaround. There are no signs of new investments, no signs of any expansion
of any major company in this country.”
Chastanet said his party is concont’d from pg 14

“Failure to meet any of
these demands within seven days hereof would result
cerned that a recent International
Monetary Fund (IMF) report indicates that the local economy has contracted by 1.1 per cent this year.
Last
year, the IMF said St. Lucia had already contracted by 2.4 per cent.
The UWP leader said this trend is
troubling particularly when it comes
to creating new opportunities for locals.
“We’ve heard no statement by the
government regarding this report and
everybody is at a complete lost as to
what is taking place in this country.”
He added that the silence by the
current administration is very troubling and all St. Lucians should therefore demand that the government
provide a report, on the state of the
economy.
“In essence we have had three
consecutive years of contraction. I
would strongly suggest to you that
three years of contraction is a deep
depression.”
The opposition leader also referred to the “Ease of Doing Business
Report” where in 2011 St. Lucia was
at number 53 – the second highest in
in legal proceedings being
brought against you in the
High Court of Justice.”
In another letter, the attorneys said that statements

the Caribbean.
However, in the 2015
report St. Lucia ranking dropped 47
places and the island is now ranked
eighth in the Caribbean.
The UWP leader said this is symbolic of the government’s failed policies that contribute to the current economic situation that the island is faced
with.
In providing some recommendation in helping to solve the current financial crisis, Chastanet said freezing
government expenditure and improving the efficiency of current spending
are necessary. He said government

The letters demanding
apologies and compensation are the latest in a string
of developments since
Nicholls was employed as
Eustace’s secretary from
August 1, 2001 to March
28, 2013, when she was
fired without severance
pay. She brought a claim
of unfair dismissal case before the Hearing Officer of
the Department of Labour,

Surgeon with ebola coming to US for care
FREETOWN, Sierra
Leone (AP) – A surgeon
working in Sierra Leone
has been diagnosed with
Ebola and will be flown
Saturday to the United
States for treatment, officials from Sierra Leone
and the United States
said.
Dr. Martin Salia was
to be taken to Omaha to
be treated at the Nebraska Medical Center, Sierra
Leone’s chief medical officer, Dr. Brima Kargbo,
told The Associated Press
on Friday. Salia reportedly lives in Maryland.
Salia is a general
surgeon who had been
working at Kissy United Methodist Hospital in
the Sierra Leone capital
of Freetown. Patients,
including mothers who
hours earlier had given
birth, fled from the 60bed hospital after news of
the Ebola case emerged,
United Methodist News
reported.
The hospital was
closed on Tuesday after
Salia tested positive and
he was taken to the Hastings Ebola Treatment
Center near Freetown,
the church news service
said. Kissy hospital staffers will be quarantined
for 21 days.
A Sierra Leone citizen, the 44-year-old lives
in Maryland and is a permanent U.S. resident, according to a person in the
United States with direct
knowledge of the situation. The person was not
authorized to release the
information and spoke on
condition of anonymity.
His wife, Isatu Salia,
said in a brief telephone
interview Friday afternoon that she had spoken with her husband by
phone earlier in the day
and that he sounded weak
but lucid and understood
what was going on.
She said she understood that arrangements
were now in place to
bring him to the U.S., and
that she needed to get to
where he will be treated.
Salia received his
surgical training from a
group called the Pan African Academy of Christian
Surgeons, which seeks to
train African doctors on a
level comparable to training they would receive
in the U.S., said Richard
Toupin, of Auburn, Indiana, a fellow medical
missionary.
“He is one of the
best-trained surgeons in
his country,” Toupin said.
“He is a very competent

Church’s Kissy Hospital outside Freetown, Sierra Leone.
surgeon.”
Bruce Steffes, executive director of PAACS, said Salia graduated
from the surgical training
program in 2008. The
training includes a requirement to practice in
Africa for four years after
completion. As a result,
Steffes said, Salia was
free to practice anywhere
he wanted, but elected
to stay in Sierra Leone,
where the need for surgeons is immense.
“People like Martin
are just absolutely dedicated, highly trained
... and doing their best
in absolutely horrifying
conditions,” Steffes said.
Jeff Bleijerveld, director of global ministries
for the United Brethren in
Christ church, said he last
talked to Salia in Febru-
ary 2013, when they met
to discuss planning for a
hospital in the southern
part of Sierra Leone. He
recalled watching Salia
perform a hernia surgery
on a young boy, assisted
by a handyman who was
not actually a doctor. He
recalled Salia leading the
surgical team in prayer
before the operation.
The United Brethren
played an early role in
Salia’s medical training.
“He’s a quiet leader,”
Bleijerveld said. “Our
people still have a real affection for him.”
The doctor will be the
third Ebola patient at the
Omaha hospital and the
10th person with Ebola to
be treated in the U.S. The
last, Dr. Craig Spencer,
was released from a New
York hospital on Tuesday.

Iraqi forces drive Islamic State
militants from key town
BAGHDAD (AP) -Iraqi forces drove Islamic State militants out of a
strategic oil refinery town
north of Baghdad on Friday, scoring their biggest
battlefield victory since
they melted away in the
face of the terror group’s
stunning summer offensive that captured much of
northern and western Iraq.
The recapture of Beiji is the latest in a series
of setbacks for the jihadi
group, which has lost hundreds of fighters to airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition in a stalled advance on
the Syrian town of Kobani.
On Friday, activists there
reported significant progress by Kurdish fighters
defending the town.
Iraqi security officials said government
forces backed by allied
militiamen took control
of Beiji and also lifted a
monthslong Islamic State
siege on its refinery - Iraq’s
largest. However, two military officials reached by
telephone in Beiji late
Friday said there was still
some fighting going on at
the refinery, but reinforcements had been sent in and
Iraqi forces were poised to
retake it.
The security officials
Some al-Qaeda-inspired militants stand with captured Iraqi
army Humvee at a checkpoint outside an oil refinery in Beiji.
said the army used loudspeakers to warn the small
number of residents still
holed up inside the town
to stay indoors while
bomb squads cleared booby-trapped houses and detonated roadside bombs.
Also Friday, a suicide
bomber tried to drive an
explosive-laden bulldozer
into a Beiji college used
by government forces, the
military officials said. The
bomber was shot dead as
he approached the gate,
but still managed to detonate his explosives, killing
three soldiers and wounding seven, they said. All
officials spoke on condition of anonymity because
they were not authorized to
speak to the media.
Beiji will now likely be a base for staging a
push to take back Saddam
Hussein’s hometown of
Tikrit to the south, after
government forces tried to
retake it earlier this year.
That campaign stalled and
the city remains in Islamic
State hands.
In Syria, meanwhile,
activists reported advances by Kurdish fighters
against Islamic State militants in the strategic town
of Kobani. Reached by
telephone, activist Barzan
Isso said the situation has
improved for the town’s
defenders following the recent airdrop of weapons by
the United States and the
arrival of heavily armed
Kurdish fighters from Iraq
to join the town’s defense.
“The YPG made major progress in the Mashta
Nour hill that overlooks
17
parts of the city and they
were also able to cut the
main road leading to Aleppo,” he told The Associated Press, using an acronym
for a main Kurdish militia,
the People’s Protection
Units.
The fighting, he said,
was now inside Kobani’s
so-called “security quarter,” an area that houses the
town’s main police station
and other local government offices. The area was
captured last month by the
Islamic State but the Kurds
have recently retaken parts
of it.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of
the fighting was focused
on the southern and southeastern fronts, where Islamic State fighters were
trying to seize back a road
the Kurds recently captured, severing one of the
militant group’s main supply lines.
As it struggles to maintain momentum on the battlefield, the militant group
has redoubled efforts to
present itself as a new Islamic caliphate, with plans
to launch its own currency
in the vast swaths of Syria
and Iraq that are still under
its control.

WEEKEND LOVE HOROSCOPE
FORECAST:
ARIES: Time to explore what’s stopping a relationship from progressing.
TAURUS: They are already wondering about you.
Now can you further build their curiosity?
GEMINI: Would you rather spend time with the
one who knows you well or get to know a new and
fascinating person? You can do either, but not both, this
weekend.
CANCER: You have more options in love than you
realize.
LEO: You don’t have to have all of the answers; in
fact, it would be a turnoff if you did.
VIRGO: Tell the truth about what you like, even if
you know the other person won’t like it.
LIBRA: Dating will probably feel weird. Just know
that it’s like that for everyone. Yes! Everyone!
SCORPIO: You’re looking for someone smart
enough to make you laugh.
SAGITTARIUS: You’ll learn what the common
ground is and focus there. Brilliant! Social success!
CAPRICORN: You may talk and do things out of
order, but the one who really gets you will understand
perfectly.
AQUARIUS: Friends who interfere with your love
life are not really friends at all.
PISCES: Concentrating fully and completely on another person’s enjoyment is a meditative exercise.
COUPLE OF THE WEEKEND:
One thing Scorpio and Virgo have in common is
that they both seek the truth and hold it sacred.
With the sun in Scorpio and the moon in Virgo this
weekend, they could go on this truth quest together and
in the end feel mutually enlightened.
These two should note that sometimes the truth has
nothing to do with words; rather, it’s a connection made
without pretense.
ARIES (March 21-April 19).
After walking around inside
your own vessel for a lifetime,
it’s easy to forget that the others haven’t seen or done or felt
all that you have. Today’s conversation will clear that up.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23).
New information nullifies the
plan. You had a feeling something was amiss with that plan
anyway. In fact, you’re probably excited that it’s time to create a more relevant strategy.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20).
You always defend the innocent, but what if you defended
the so-called guilty instead?
How would you see the situation differently? There’s a
stalemate going on that you
can break by playing devil’s
advocate.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21).
People want you in their drama. There’s one person in particular who is practically casting you in it, Hollywood-style.
Don’t worry. All you have to
do is turn down the role. A-listers do it all the time.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21).
Acceptance is the way to peace.
It won’t be easy today, but you
can warm up to it. What if you
agreed to accept that unacceptable thing for three minutes?
Then six. Then 12...
CANCER (June 22-July 22).
Feelings of rejection can be
so potentially painful that
many people would rather become angry than endure even
the slightest rejection. You’re
tougher than that, and it’s why
you make a sale today.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec.
21). Social lulls are to be expected. Make the most of them
by using them as an opportunity to bring the attention around
to the other person’s favorite
subject or expertise. The other person’s comfort will be to
your benefit.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan.
19). When nothing seems to be
working on its own, you see it
as an invitation to make it work
by nudging it, winding it up or
throwing your full weight behind it. Success!
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). You
long to work on your own projects, but because you’re such
a good friend, you keep getting roped into other people’s.
Say “no.” Be a good friend to
yourself instead. You’re shortchanging your talent.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb.
18). You have a sense for the
unspoken needs of others.
When you address these in
unexpected ways and without calling direct attention to
the needs, they find you super-cool.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). All
you can control is the action
you take; nothing after that.
Not other people’s perception
of you, not their immediate
reactions, not their subsequent
choices. So act, and let it go.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20).
You don’t like it when people
push you to agree with them,
buy from them or tend to them.
You’ll do that kind of thing
when and if you want to. They
would be wise to wait until you
want to.

Jacobs - More cricket will help players
Georgetown, Guyana
- He has scored three centuries and has had 229 dismissals behind the stumps
in his 65 Test matches for
the West Indies and now
the left-handed Antiguan
is saddled with the responsibility of trying to move
Leewards cricket forward
in his role as Head Coach.
His mission begins today at Providence when his
charges battle hosts Guyana
Jaguars and the 46-year-old
former West Indies wicket
keeper/ feels this season is
a good opportunity for most
of his players to be in the
first-class set-up and make
a name for themselves.
“I think that leadership
was the reason for our poor
performances in times past.
I have seen these players
and I don’t think they lack
ability and talent. I think
that the people who were
working with these guys
were not honest with them,
teaching them the simple
and basic things they need
to achieve and that is why
I am here to make things
happen for them and their
cricket. If I cannot make
things happen like the days
of yore when we were winning tournaments and having players go onto represent the West Indies team
then I should not be here,”
Jacobs said.
“I think the bond I build
with these players has to
be good. You have to have
a good relationship with
these players who will basically be away from their
homes for a long time, so
you have to live as a family and enjoy the moments.
There will be good times
and bad times, but is how
we deal with these times is
what matters most to make
sure they are enjoying what
they are doing,” said Jacobs
who played 157 First-Class
matches between 1991 and
2005.
Jacobs thinks the longer format for the Regional
four-day Day tournament
15 November 2014
is a good thing. “Over the
years a lot of the players
and even administrators
spoke about the tournaments being too short, so it
is good from the West Indies administration thinking about the initiative of
having the players playing
more cricket which is important and help them learn
their craft.
On how does Kieran
Powell’s absence affect the
strength of the team: Jacobs
admitted that Powell’s absence will affect the team
based on his experience and
his capabilities, but added
that it creates the opportunity for a young player to
take that mantle and step
up as there is a vacancy for
a young player.
“We have some young
players who are eager to fill
the gap created by the absence of Powell.
“Think we have a balanced team and I think our
bowling can be our strength
given the surfaces around
Until 15 November 2014
the region. In times past,
our batting was generally
our strength and now that
I am in charge I am looking to ensure we can make
things happen again with
our batting and things will
turn out different from what
used to happen before. We
want to see our batsmen applying themselves and giving the bowlers big totals to
defend” Jacobs said.
I think Devon Thomas
has been there for a while
and he is the captain now,
so we will be looking for
him to play an important
role, along with his deputy Jahmar Hamilton. Austin Richards Jr is making
a comeback and Jacques
Taylor is another technically sound player and we
expect them to go out there
and execute properly. We
have experienced players
like Gavin Tonge and Anthony Martin to add some
stability to the line-up” Jacobs concluded. (Kaieteur

Sammy handed Titans captaincy
SOUTH AFRICA West Indies allrounder Darren Sammy has been handed the Titans captaincy for
the remainder of the South
African domestic 20-over
competition with the franchise yet to decide who will
take over in other formats.
Sammy replaces Henry Davids, who has been
asked to concentrate solely
on his batting as the Titans
attempt to overturn a poor
start to the tournament
which has seen them slump
to three straight defeats.
“This is a tactical decision to see how we can turn
things around,” Jacques
Faul, CEO of the Titans
franchise told ESPNcricinfo. “He is a World T20 winning captain. If you have
someone like that at your
disposal, you should use
them.”
Sammy is one of five
West Indies players and one
of six internationals who
have been signed on for the
duration of the Ram Slam
but the only one who has
been given the additional
responsibility of leading a
team. Ironically, he is the
only one who has yet to
deliver a stand-out performance for his side.
Chris Gayle scored the
competition’s first century and also has two fifties
to his name for the Lions;
Craig Kieswetter is the
Warriors’ top-scorer; Kieron Pollard’s 72 off 36
balls helped the Cobras to
victory over the Titans; Andre Russell scored 48 off 21
balls and took 1 for 20 when
the Knights beat the Titans
and Dwayne Bravo’s 43 off
25 balls took the Dolphins
to a match-winning total
over the Warriors.
But Sammy is Titans’
leading wicket-taker with
five scalps at 14.60 and
Faul believes what he offers behind the scenes will
be vital. “We are more than
happy with what Darren
has brought to the team.
He has been inspirational
Darren Sammy will try to revive the fortunes of his franchise.
and the guys really respect
him,” Faul said. “We want
to see what someone else
can do to get back to winning ways.”
The Titans are traditionally one of South Africa’s stronger teams but
have had a difficult start to
the season, particularly in
limited-overs cricket. They
lie fourth on the one-day
cup table and fifth on the
20-over standings having
suffered from a squad de-
pleted by national call-ups.
Currently, both their
leading paceman Marchant
de Lange and key batsman
Farhaan Behardien are in
Australia with the South
African ODI squad. They
were also without David
Wiese, who travelled for
the T20s and Albie Morkel,
who was injured pre-season
and is not expected to be
back before January after
first targeting a December
comeback. (ESPNcricinfo)
