TSA Statement, 28 Jan 2014

Despite the TSA statement, the transpacific carriers appear to have done
exactly that, as several carriers have
continued to add new capacity despite their failure to raise rates.
Total weekly capacity on the transpacific routes is expected to increase by
2.5% in the third quarter of 2014, led
by CSCL/UASC and Evergreen.
Capacity via the Suez canal to the US
East Coast will exceed that routed via
Panama for the first time in history.

The new 2014/15 Transpacific service contract season got off to a poor start
for carriers after they failed to push through with the proposed rate increases
effective from 1 May, with various rate reductions reported by BCOs. Carriers
continued to pursue volume over rates, as the majority of them plans to mount
capacity upgrades for the summer peak shipping season.
Total weekly capacity on transpacific services is expected to increase by 2.5%
in the third quarter of 2014, before taking into account any additional strings
that carriers could launch in the peak season, according to Alphaliner estimates. The increases are led by the CSCL/UASC grouping and Evergreen which
plan to raise their weekly capacity by 27% and 8% respectively. In contrast, the
CKYH carriers are to cut their combined capacity by 4%.
The G6 and P3 alliances are also to embark on major service upgrade programs, as they will extend their shared service networks on the Transpacific
routes: The G6 carriers will expand their cooperation to the FE-USWC routes
from May, adding to the existing joint services on the FE-USEC routes, which
started in May 2013. The six carriers will provide the widest coverage of the
Transpacific trades, offering up to 15 weekly connections to the US West Coast
and eight weekly connections to the US East Coast, although overall G6 capacity will only grow by a modest 1%.
The P3 carriers will raise their combined capacity by 4% but will have to delay
