CFUW Edmonton Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships
The University of Alberta awarded two undergraduate entrance scholarships from an
endowment our Club established many years ago. Courtney Marguerite Lacoste and Kathleen
Duna Jo were each awarded $1,000. This scholarship is awarded annually on the basis of
superior academic achievement, to an Alberta high school graduate entering the first year of an

undergraduate degree program at the University of Alberta. The recipient will have achieved a
minimum average of 85% on the required Grade 12 Alberta examinations.
The award of two additional scholarships to second year undergraduate students will be
announced in February of 2014.
Geneva Misener Graduate Scholarship Fund
For several years, club President (now Past President) Nina Jackson and a team of CFUW
Edmonton members tirelessly sought acknowledgement for Dr. Geneva Misener. In 1912 Dr.
Misener became the first woman member of the academic staff at the University of Alberta,
first as assistant professor of Classics (1912-20) and later as a full professor (1920 – 45). Her
additional contributions to the University include serving as advisor to women students (1913 –
20) and as a member of the Senate (1926 – 28).
At the Plaque unveiling ceremony and tea on April 28, 2013, the Garneau Community League
presented CFUW Edmonton AAF with a generous donation in memory of Dr. Geneva Misener.
This donation has become the basis of a fund to create a new CFUW Edmonton Graduate
Scholarship in Dr. Misener’s name. In 2013 we raised approximately $10,000 for this
Scholarship, through fundraising and donations. Fundraising will be ongoing.

CFUW EDMONTON AAF CHAIR ANNUAL REPORT
Excerpts from the Thank-you notes/letters kindly provided by recipients are listed below:

“Thank you so much! Going back to university after such a long hiatus was a big
challenge and expense for my partner, children and I. My son requires oral surgery very
soon. The end is in sight for my Master’s degree and having realized that I did not have
enough money left to cover my tuition was disheartening. Especially, since I have been
working 30 plus hours a week to support my family whilst maintaining my grades.
Moreover, it was a pleasure to meet with CFUW and learn more about the group and the
work they do. I was nervous about the interview but was immediately put at ease and
the process was not only seamless but enjoyable! “

“It is such a great relief and will enable me to complete the Fall term which hitherto, was
threatening to be incomplete. I can now deliver my baby and have enough support to
take care of her while I write my end of term exams and term papers.“

“I have read about Elsie Mitchell Newland and I hope one day I also will be able
to donate to CFUW to support women in the future who are brave enough to go
back to school after building their families and having their children.”

“I would like to thank you and your organization so much for your generous bursary. I
feel so honoured to be recognized by an organization that promotes and helps women
pursue their goals. Your gift will allow me to undergo my pending dental work that I had
been avoiding. Your generosity inspires to me to me to pay it forward to other students
in my situation when I am financially stable. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for
your gift, and for all that your organization does for others.”

Dr. Lori West, pediatric transplant cardiologist and transplant immunologist at the University of
Alberta was our guest speaker. Dr. West has recently been named Director of the new
Canadian National Transplant Research Program. Guests appreciated the informative and
interesting presentation, while enjoying a delicious lunch.
The Silent Auction offered guests an opportunity to bid on many unique and lovely items which
were generously donated by members, friends and local businesses.
My thanks to the Fundraising Luncheon committee, who worked diligently to plan and organize
this very successful event and to all of our donors and contributors.
Proceeds from the event, almost $5,000 will be contributed to the new CFUW Edmonton AAF
Geneva Misener Scholarship.
We have just begun to plan the 2014 luncheon with a similar format, and will be confirming a
date, location and guest speaker.
Casino Fundraiser
Casino funds enable CFUW Edmonton to maintain its commitment to our outstanding
Scholarships and Bursaries Program. I wish to give sincere thanks to Audrey Keen, who for
many years has organized this casino.
We have received notification of our upcoming casino event in May 2014. Please volunteer
your time to assist in the various positions needed for this casino to be successful.

CFUW EDMONTON AAF CHAIR ANNUAL REPORT
Many thanks to the 2013 Executive: Chris Rapp (Secretary), Heather Pick (Treasurer), Georgie
Scafe (Scholarship Convenor), Janet Clark (Bursary Convenor), Audrey Keen (Casino), and Myrna
Snart.
Concluding Remarks
I owe a great deal of gratitude to the 2013 AAF Executive and CFUW Edmonton Executive and
especially to:
~ Georgie Scafe, who stepped forward last December to take on the Scholarship Convenor
position at very short notice and who has been an amazing resource and support throughout
the year.
~ Heather Pick for guiding me in all things financial through this first year as AAF Chair.
~ Myrna Snart, our Club President who, if she doesn’t know the answer, knows exactly where to
find it!!
These women, as well as many other members of CFUW Edmonton are admirable for their
tireless work in directing and supporting our Scholarship and Bursary Program.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my year as Chair of the Academic Awards Fund and am looking
forward to 2014. Our work in assisting women students to complete their post-secondary
education is invaluable, and as a member of CFUW Edmonton, I take great pride in our
commitment to improving the lives of women and children through education.
