ANNA BARLOW Biography Combining the artistʼs love for ceramics and food, Barlowʼs unique and immaculately produced sculptures of ice-cream are exquisite and enticing. Exploring the rituals and ceremony of eating Barlow uses clay, porcelain and colourful glazes to create highly realistic and celebratory works. The artist states “The beauty of food left to melt and ooze holds a fascination for me. It is something that is usually over looked and temporary but this can be captured and frozen in time with clay and glaze. I have focused on ice cream as it is such a momentary and yet memorable treat that most of us have experienced and therefore can evoke memories of sensations and tastes, as well as prompt a fantasy of desired indulgences.” Barlow skilfully exploits the material properties to vividly capture the characteristics of these desserts - the dry translucency of fired porcelain suits the biscuit texture of wafers and ice cream cones, while the colourful liquidity of a silky opaque earthenware glaze is used to capture the quality of dripping ice cream. Also combining the detritius of the after-math of a meal, including broken plates, spoons and cushions, there is an implied narrative to these works that intrigues and seduces the viewer.
