... And Elisha the man of God asked, "Where did it fall in?", and the man showed him the place. Then Elisha cut down a stick, and threw it there, and the iron axe head rose to the surface . (2 Kings 6:6)
The above-mentioned passage recounts the story of Elisha causing an iron axe head to float. Some readers may find this story perplexing. Certainly this story demonstrates God's power, God's provision, and
God's care for those who serve Him. Beyond this thought, God wants us to see the source of strength
falling into water and readily not available for use. But what does a floating axe head have to do with the
spiritual warfare that we Christians need to engage in.
At first sight, nothing -- but upon closer inspection, many significant points of contact emerge. In many
respects, the prophet & servants are typical of ministry works. We perform work to expand the kingdom of
God either through preaching, teaching, prayers warfare e.t.c. Certainly, the church should be the source
of strength in our country, she should take her strategic position in spiritual warfare. A typical approach on
when the handle is capable of holding the axe head tight. An axe head fell in the water resulting in the
weakening strength to continue in warfare fight, an occasion to look for alternative ‘to do the job”.
The axe head was resurrected when Elisha threw a stick into the water. The stick is a symbol of power and
authority, just as all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to the Lord Jesus. Be strong in the
Lord and the power of His might. We must go even further and realize that God continues to place within
our lives circumstances and incidents which bear exactly the same witness in order to understand God’s
spiritual warfare

1. Great opposition –
Pray against the great opposition - 1 Corinthians 16:9 For a great door and effectual is
opened unto me, and there are many adversaries. There's a Great Opportunity - but it goes
hand in hand with Great Opposition.
- People are opposed to the work of the Gospel.
- They are against the true workings of the Holy Spirit.
- There are adversaries: Not just a few…But many adversaries.
2 Corinthians 1:8 For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which
came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that
we despaired even of life:” Paul had his share of pressure and trouble…
2. Human Opposition - Ungodly stir and gang up against the gospel of truth.
Acts 19:23 And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.
There was more than a bit of a stir… There was agitation… There was disturbance…
“For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries”, Paul
says. All these good things are happening - these openings - these opportunities, AND yet
there are many adversaries…
• Pray against the “Many opposers” of the Christian faith and the word of God.
• Pray against the “Many that set themselves against the work of God”.
• Pray against the “Many that resist the gospel”.
They fight God, They refuse to accept the Gospel, They turn their ears away from the truth.
People are hostile or will become hostile to this Gospel message and its messenger. Our
prayers can turn the counsel of the “Ahitophels” into foolishness!
3. Religious Opposition – 1 Corinthians 16:9b … and there are many adversaries
- Paul's Adversaries…include Religious Opposition
- The Temple of Diana was located in Ephesus - Acts 19:24-35
- How many are the temples located in Melbourne? Can they not constitutes adversaries to
the Open Doors? The Lord must oppose the “opposers” of the Gospel of Christ! He can do it
through our ceaseless prayers.
- The church was often maligned in the mind of many - Acts 28:22 “…for as concerning
this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against”.
